From Pietism To Pluralism: Boston Personalism And The Liberal Era In American Methodist Theology, 1876-1953, Amos Yong May 1995

From Pietism To Pluralism: Boston Personalism And The Liberal Era In American Methodist Theology, 1876-1953, Amos Yong

Dissertations and Theses

Boston personalism has generally been recognized as a philosophic system based upon a metaphysical idealism. What is less known, however, is that the founder of this school of thought and some of the major contributors to the early development of this tradition were committed members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

The purpose of this study is to examine the contributions made by the early Boston personalists to the cause of theological liberalism in the Methodist Church. It will be shown that personalist philosophers and theologians at Boston University ushered in and consolidated the liberal era in Methodist theology. Further, it …

An Entry Level Lutheran Liturgy For Members And Guest, David Preuss May 1995

An Entry Level Lutheran Liturgy For Members And Guest, David Preuss

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

Influences inside and outside the Lutheran Church are pressing for change in worship style from liturgical to some free form alternative. Often the purpose is to make it easier for guests without a liturgical background to participate. How can Lutheran congregations and pastors make their worship service more "user-friendly” without abandoning their liturgical link with the church of all ages and places?

First, establish the essence of Lutheran liturgical worship. How did the Lutheran Reformation deal with the need for changes? How are pastors today attempting to resolve the issue? How do we evaluate these endeavors?

One resolution is to …

Paul's Earliest Statement Concerning The Christian Church: A Review And Evaluation Of Research Into Paul's Association Of The Term Ἐκκλησία To Ἐν Χριστῷ In 1 Thessalonians, Roberto Pereyra

Dissertations

The purpose of the dissertation is to develop a deeper understanding of Paul's earliest statement concerning the Christian Church as expressed in the context of 1 Thessalonians. This understanding is gained through a review and evaluation of research into Paul's association of the term ἐκκλησία to the ἐν Χριστῷ motif in the context of 1 Thessalonians.

Chapter 1 reviews literature on the topic and introduces the study. Chapter 2 examines introductory issues of 1 Thessalonians such as authorship, date and place of writing, recipients, general situation, and purpose. Chapter 3 deals with the authenticity of 1 Thess 2:13-16, aliterary question …

The Remnant Motif In The Context Of Judgment And Salvation In The Book Of Jeremiah, Kenneth D. Mulzac Jan 1995

The Remnant Motif In The Context Of Judgment And Salvation In The Book Of Jeremiah, Kenneth D. Mulzac

Dissertations

This dissertation attempts to fill a gap in studies on the remnant motif in the Old Testament by investigating this motif in the book of Jeremiah, a task not fully attempted previously. This study pursues the motif within the main theological framework of judgment and salvation in the book. Five technical terms designating remnant are considered: šכr, plt, mlt, śrd, and ytr.

Chapter 1 canvasses the literature on remnant research from 1903 to the present. It is divided into two sections. The first deals with publications on the remnant motif in materials outside the book of Jeremiah. …

Public Readings And Pentateuchal Law, James W. Watts Jan 1995

Public Readings And Pentateuchal Law, James W. Watts

Religion - All Scholarship

References to reading are remarkably sparse in the Hebrew Bible. Though the variety of forms and styles in the biblical books attests an ancient literary culture in Israel, there is little explicit mention of reading prophecy and virtually no references to reading hymns or history. Most references to reading portray the reading of law.

Such references provide valuable insights into how the Pentateuch's writers expected their work to be read. Reading expectations make up the components of genre and shape the conventions used by writers to compose their works. Thus accounts of law readings also illulllinate the ancient literary conventions …

He Hears The Cry Of The Poor: Full Text Jan 1995

He Hears The Cry Of The Poor: Full Text

Maloney, Robert

Publisher's Note: He Hears the Cry of the Poor is based on conferences and talks Father Maloney gave to Vincentians and Daughters of Charity during the last two years. Drawing from the letters and conferences of Vincent de Paul, he then makes the solid connection to contemporary issues. It touches on vital questions for religious communities today: the renewal of community and prayer life; the apostolate; the growing international character of communities and the related inter-cultural challenges; inculturation; and the shift in vocations from North to South. Father Maloney offers his many years of experience and expertise to relay an …

Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Seminar On Positive Resolution Of Interpersonal And Substantive Conflict In The Hazelton, British Columbia, Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Bruce B. Boyd Jan 1995

Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Seminar On Positive Resolution Of Interpersonal And Substantive Conflict In The Hazelton, British Columbia, Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Bruce B. Boyd

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Some form of conflict is associated with virtually every human relationship, including relationships involving Christians. Negative conflict situations frequently injure Christians, and sometimes conflicts are severe enough to cripple churches. The purpose of this project was to study whether the teaching of concepts and skills that are, first, related to the management and resolution of interpersonal and substantive conflict, and second, congruent with biblical principles will have a positive impact upon how parishioners understand conflict and, as a result, upon how they behave in conflict situations so that the negative results of conflict are reduced and the positive results …

The Name Israel And Related Expressions In The Books Of Amos And Hosea, Ganoune Diop Jan 1995

The Name Israel And Related Expressions In The Books Of Amos And Hosea, Ganoune Diop

Dissertations

This study provides an investigation of the occurrences of the designation "Israel," the related names "Judah," "Jacob," "Joseph," "Isaac," "David," "Ephraim," and their combinations in the books of Amos and Hosea in order to find out their referents and the reasons for their usages. Chapter 1 provides a statement of the problem, pointing out the considerable divergence of opinions regarding the etymology, origin, and usage of the designation "Israel." Chapter 2 begins with a review of etymological and historical points of view in order to provide a background for the study. Then follows a review of the literature that addresses …

Dying And Rising As We Grow Up: Lifelong Baptismal Formation, Elaine Ramshaw Jan 1995

Dying And Rising As We Grow Up: Lifelong Baptismal Formation, Elaine Ramshaw

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

In honor of David Truemper, who taught me the Lutheran Confessions, I want to begin with a quotation from the Large Catechism. Luther writes: Thus we see what a great and excellent thing baptism is, which snatches us from the jaws of the devil and makes God our own, overcomes and takes away sin and daily strengthens the new man, always remains until we pass from this present misery to eternal glory. Therefore let everybody regard his baptism as the daily garment which he is to wear all the time. Every day he should be found in faith and …

Distorted Mirrors: Antonius Margaritha, Johann Buxtorf And Christian Ethnographies Of The Jews, Stephen G. Burnett Jun 1994

Distorted Mirrors: Antonius Margaritha, Johann Buxtorf And Christian Ethnographies Of The Jews, Stephen G. Burnett

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

Antonius Margaritha's Entire Jewish Faith (1530) and Johann Buxtorf's Jewish Synagogue (1603) were the two most influential Christian ethnographies of the Jews written during the early modern period. Margaritha and Buxtorf were not disinterested ethnographers who sought to provide a balanced and fair appraisal of Jewish life and religion, but were Christians who were violently opposed to Judaism, and their descriptions were to some degree skewed by their theological and social agendas. They criticized Judaism and the Jews from three different perspectives: Judaism as a biblical theology, the social interaction of ordinary Jews and Christians, and Jewry as an order …

An Examination Of Educational Principles As Applied To An On—Going Congregational Program Of Childhood And Adult Education, James Keuch May 1994

An Examination Of Educational Principles As Applied To An On—Going Congregational Program Of Childhood And Adult Education, James Keuch

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

The role of education within the parish context has long been recognized as a necessary and integral component of parish ministry. The scores of confirmation and Sunday School materials available on the market today illustrate the variety of techniques and approaches used to educate children. But education does not, or should not, end with the onset of puberty. Education, and Christian education in particular, needs to be an ongoing facet for the adult as well. To that end, this project will seek to present some of the philosophical foundations and practical methods of adult education within the parish.
