The History Of The Evolution Of Shorthand, Selma O. Preuss Jun 1929

The History Of The Evolution Of Shorthand, Selma O. Preuss

Bachelors’ Theses

One manifestation of man's superiority over the rest of the animal kingdom consists in the power of communicating thought by means of speech. At first when all mankind dwelt together, a spoken language was sufficient to meet the demands. When, however, the human race began to disperse over the earth, another means of communication was found necessary. Consequently, the art of writing was introduced, crude at first, but gaining in ease, grace, and speed through the ages, until it reached the acme of its perfection. To the literary art the whole commonwealth of other arts must bow down am resign …

The New In Music, Alma Lowry Williams Jan 1929

The New In Music, Alma Lowry Williams

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The selection of the subject, “The New in Music,” was prompted by an interest in the frequent appearance of new aspects in the art music. The following critique is the result of an attempt to uncover forces which work toward forming the new, to evaluate essential factors of newness, and to consider the reaction of the public to new musical trends.

Although the accent of the work is placed on the music of the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries, consideration is also given to essentially new aspects of music during the earlier period since the Fourteenth Century. Complexities of …

The Doctrinal Content Of Isaiah's Prophesy, Fred Kramer May 1927

The Doctrinal Content Of Isaiah's Prophesy, Fred Kramer

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to show how much doctrine the Prophesy of Isaiah contains. The result of my studies shows that, with the exception of the doctrine of Baptism, and the Lord's Supper, every important doctrine of the Bible is found more or less complete in this wonderful book. Proof of this statement may be had in the thesis itself.

A Sociological Study Of The Indian Caste System, George H. Singh Jan 1927

A Sociological Study Of The Indian Caste System, George H. Singh

Graduate Thesis Collection

Whenever people in America and elsewhere outside of India hear anything about the Indian caste system, they show a great contempt, even to disgust, in their attitude towards this ancient institution which has been instrumental, to a very large degree in moulding the destinies of India up to this day. To a casual observer this institution is but "a monster custom" (Low, S., Vision of India, p. 260) which saps the character of people leaving them degenerate in their own group and degraded in the modern world. He condemns it from every angle, scorns and abhors those who follow it, …

Evolution And Philosophy, Arlo A. Mckinnon Jun 1926

Evolution And Philosophy, Arlo A. Mckinnon

Bachelors’ Theses

In the discussion of any major topic, much feeling and little logic make for inevitable confusion. And so it was that when in 1925 John T. Scopes, an obscure teacher of secondary school natural sciences in Tennessee, took it upon himself to instruct his pupils in certain theories of so-called Evolution, he precipitated an argument of national scope. For on March 23d of that same year Governor Austin Peay of Tennessee had signed an Anti-Evolution bill which forbade any public school of the state ”to teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine creation of man as taught …

Political Organization Of The Plains Indians, With Special Reference To The Council, Maurice Greer Smith Apr 1925

Political Organization Of The Plains Indians, With Special Reference To The Council, Maurice Greer Smith

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Next to sociological field work, ... there are within this branch of study no other investigations so urgently needed as monographs on some definite class of social phenomena or institutions among a certain group of related tribes. A comparative treatment of some social institution as it exists throughout the uncivilized races of the world undoubtedly has value .... But at the same time a comparative study suffers from defects which seem wellnigh inseparable from the prosecution of so great a task. A social institution is not an isolated phenomenon, but is closely connected with a variety of facts. It is …

Xx. The Term "Communal", Louise Pound Jun 1924

Xx. The Term "Communal", Louise Pound

Department of English: Faculty Publications

I. The Doctrine of Communal Origins

The period following the French Revolution was deeply interested in "the people" as a mass conception, in all that belonged to them and all that they created. It was in this period that theorists on the origin of law, customs, religion, language, literature--particularly the folk-song and the folk-tale--liked to advocate the doctrine of spontaneous, unconscious growth "from the heart of the people," as the phrase went. Such conceptions of origin had their critics from the first; but they remained more or less orthodox throughout the nineteenth century, and they still have foothold in both …
