Aboriginal Australians Speak : An Introduction To Australian Aboriginal Linguistics, Eric G. Vaszolyi Jan 1976

Aboriginal Australians Speak : An Introduction To Australian Aboriginal Linguistics, Eric G. Vaszolyi

Research outputs pre 2011

It has duly been recognized that Aboriginal society in Australia is far from homogeneous. People and groups referred to as part-Aborigines, urban Aborigines, fringe-dwellers, rural Aborigines, traditionally oriented or tribal Aborigines in the outback and so on display considerable diversity in terms of culture, identity, aspirations and the like. Language is no exception. Some Aboriginal people (mainly in cities or towns and some rural areas) would speak as good an English as any non-Aboriginal Australian and often much better: indeed, their only language, their. 'mother tongue' is English. In contrast, in the outback one can still meet Aborigines who speak …

A Study Of The Influence Of The Mormon Church On The Catawba Indians Of South Carolina 1882-1975, Jerry D. Lee

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to discuss the origin and development of the Southern States Mission of the Mormon Church as it relates to the Catawba Indians of York County. The primary purpose of this relationship was to teach the Indian people the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. It is also the purpose of this study to show the significance of the change in the Catawba society resulting from this mission. From the time the first Mormon missionaries came into contact with the Catawbas, their lives have been deeply influenced by the teachings of the LDS Church. Every aspect …

Freshwater Mussel Shells As Indicators Of Seasonal Occupation Of Archaeological Sites: Review Of The Method, Robert H. Ray Jan 1976

Freshwater Mussel Shells As Indicators Of Seasonal Occupation Of Archaeological Sites: Review Of The Method, Robert H. Ray

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Seasonal occupation of sites and utilization of resources by aborigines is a subject of growing importance to prehistoric archeologists; however, relatively few satisfactory techniques are available for making the necessary determinations. Recent research in New Zealand has indicated the potential value of bivalve mollusks in subsistence-settlement pattern studies. A method for seasonal dating of prehistoric sites involving growth ring analysis of freshwater mussel shells and the potential application of this method in Ozark archeology are discussed.

An Analysis Of Attitudes Navajo Community Leaders Have Toward A Religion Sponsored Program Based Upon Membership Of That Faith And Amount Of Information Attained, Howard Rainer Jan 1976

An Analysis Of Attitudes Navajo Community Leaders Have Toward A Religion Sponsored Program Based Upon Membership Of That Faith And Amount Of Information Attained, Howard Rainer

Theses and Dissertations

The problem is to analyze the opinions of the Navajo community leadership towards a religion sponsored program, as related to their exposure to information about the program and to othether social variables. Specifically, this study is concerned with two main questions:
1. Is the reaction among Navajo community leaders towards the LDS Indian Placement Program related to the amount of information they have available about that program?
2. Is the attitudes of Navajo community leaders concerning the Placement Program related to their social economic status of age, religious affiliation, and other such variables?

Relf Kieser, Max Frisch: Das Literarische Tagebuch: Book Review, John F. Holley

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The significance of Max Frisch's Diaries as literature is not dependent on a formal satisfaction of structural norms: it is not a art that strives for the perfection of a traditional model, but rather an attempt to move through a linguistic game ("ein linguistisches Spiel") toweard ther boundries of the expressible - toward that point at which, as Rolf Kieser puts it, the reader recognizes the significance of the white spaces between the words ("das Weisse zwischen den Worten"). In his book Max Frisch: Das literarische Tagebuch Professor Kieser bring calls " diaristisch," to the fore and, in a examination …

Daniela Weinberg, Peasant Wisclom, Cultural Adaptation In A Swiss Village: Book Review, Elinor Sosne

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Traditional anthropological wisdom holds that peasantry as a cultural type is declining in the modern world as the social and economic conditions for its existence disappear. Modern peasant community studies, therefore, often trace the transformation that is occurring throughout the world as typically peasant communities change and new "post-peasants'' emerge .

Tobacco Farming: The Persistence Of Tradition, Eugene Umberger Jr. Dec 1975

Tobacco Farming: The Persistence Of Tradition, Eugene Umberger Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The culture of tobacco has been associated with the history of Kentucky almost from the beginning and remains to this day a vital force in the state’s economy. In this age of scientific and technological advances – of increasing automation – we find that in tobacco farming, hand labor still figures prominently in the production of a major staple crop. This has resulted in the retention of traditional method, technology and terminology, long since lost in the culture of other crops which lent themselves more easily to mechanization.

The study is divided into three parts. Chapter I deals briefly with …

Anaxagoras And Epicurus, Margaret Reesor Dec 1975

Anaxagoras And Epicurus, Margaret Reesor

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

It is, I believe, clear that Epicurus adopted an interpretation of the impression which was alien to Democritus’ atomic theory and closer to that of Anaxagoras. Anaxagoras may have believed that the qualities of the impression accurately reproduced the attributes of the objects; and he certainly regarded the objects of sense perception as true. He held that that from which an entity emerges had predominant parts which were the same as the predominant parts of the entity. Anaxagoras' experiments suggest that he was aware in some degree of the principle of confirmatory evidence and evidence to the contrary. His form …
