The Troubled Ecstasy Of Yeats's "Purgatory" And "At The Hawk's Well", Gregory Michael Sadlek Jan 1977

The Troubled Ecstasy Of Yeats's "Purgatory" And "At The Hawk's Well", Gregory Michael Sadlek

Masters Theses

A great amount of W. B. Yeats's writing attests to his fascination with the preternatural. Indeed, it seems that Yeats felt the sacred experience to be somehow central in the living of a full life. Further, in his essay "The Celtic Element in Literature," he proposed that all great literature arises out of the passion which flows from the sacred experience. Yeats thought that drama as well as poetry, then, must plumb this core of life. And in his essay "The Tragic Theatre" he declared that great tragedy deals with feelings and experiences which are universal and timeless and which …

Women's Studies In Its Second Phase, Gayle Graham Yates Jan 1977

Women's Studies In Its Second Phase, Gayle Graham Yates

Women's Studies Quarterly

A personal statement written for tbe program at tbe University of Minnesota and presented at a brown bag lunch.

Women's studies is in its seventh year nationally, its fifth year here, at least under that title. It is appropriate to take stock now and ask why women's studies? What is it about? Where is it going?

Women's studies was born out of the women's movement, is still a child of the women's movement—the academic branch of that family. The women's movement is in what I would now call its fourth phase; women's studies is in a parallel second stage.

Restitution Of Cultural Material To Africa, E. Kofi Agorsah Jan 1977

Restitution Of Cultural Material To Africa, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

As African nations search for means to establish viable and authentic cultural identities, an increasing number of demands have been made on European Governments to return art objects, archives and antiquities taken during the colonial era. In a sense these demands come as attempts to turn back history, the history which denuded Africa of its culture in order to impress the fact of colonial subjugation.

For centuries, the movement of African art and antiquities has been an outward flow and as thousands of military and political conquerors, administrators, missionaries and adventurers took home souvenirs of their African experiences, and with …

Cold Connections As Used By The Metalsmith And Sculptor, Deborah A. Rohr Jan 1977

Cold Connections As Used By The Metalsmith And Sculptor, Deborah A. Rohr

Masters Theses

Metal may be joined to metal and non-metal materials by many techniques. It is my intent to discuss one group of such techniques--that of cold connections, and illustrate them with art works. Although there are many types of cold connections, this study will concentrate on the use of rivets, screws, bolts, adhesives, nails and wire as cold connectors.

A proper definition for cold connection is attachment of one piece of material to another piece of material without use of heat.

Historical reference of the uses of cold connections by prehistoric man, early civilizations of man, through modern times is included …

The Balfour Declaration And International Law, Thomas Noreuil Jan 1977

The Balfour Declaration And International Law, Thomas Noreuil

Masters Theses

An American general who formerly headed the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in Palestine stated recently: "The American mind is being manipulated as far as Palestine is concerned." He was referring to Zionist manipulations. My own experiences with the Zionist Organization of America, which refused to answer any of my requests for varied information, confirm the general's charge. My own acquaintance with the Palestine problem has revealed that the equities involved in the area have been buried under a mass of distortion, misinformation and insidious propaganda which have misrepresented the actual facts and veiled the historical and legal truth to …

An Investigation Of Field-Generated Constructs For Intercollegiate Debater Credibility, John S. Turner Jr. Jan 1977

An Investigation Of Field-Generated Constructs For Intercollegiate Debater Credibility, John S. Turner Jr.

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This study investigates the variables currently utilized by the field of debate in making assessments of intercollegiate debater credibility. All of the variables are the result of field-dependent data. As such, this study investigates the actual perceptions and judgments of debate coaches and judges as they evaluate and critique intercollegiate debaters, and the criteria that compose the assessment of the debater. Following the compilation of constructs of debaters obtained from several coaches, the list is reduced to a more manageable number and then is returned to the coaches and judges in the field of debate for their assessments and judgments …

A Study Of Role Conflict In The Experience Of The Pastor-Bible Teacher In Seventh-Day Adventist Boarding Academies, Derrell K. Smith

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The pastor-Bible teacher in the Seventh-day Adventist boarding academy may be confronted with many role conflicts. His dual role as pastor and teacher multiplies the possibilities for conflict. What are some of the conflicts that may affect the pastor- Bible teacher's acceptance, or loss of acceptance, by the students as a shepherd-counselor? Are the conflicts such that the pastor- Bible teacher needs to experience anxiety concerning his dual role?

Methods

To better understand the problem and discover possible solutions to it, the following steps were taken: 1. A study was made of the nature of role conflict as generally …

Glenn L. Emmons Of Gallup, Debra R. Boender

History ETDs

Glenn L. Emmons was Commissioner of Indian Affairs from 1953 to 1961 during the administration of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Since this was the decade during which the controversy over the policy of termination began, Emmons' administration of the Bureau of Indian Affairs was important and of interest to students of Indian policy, Questions exist concerning the nature of the man, his background, and reasons for his appointment to that post. This biography hopes to answer some of these, as well as provide some insight into Emmons' policies and programs which tended to extend government involvement with Indian tribes, contrary to …

I Love Ta Plow: The Role Of Traditional Farm Women In Peytonsburg, Kentucky, Linda White

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study is a development of the work roles of traditional farm women in Peytonsburg, Kentucky. Peytonsburg is a relatively isolated area along the western border of the Appalachians. Traditional processes such as broom-making, chair-making, quilting, spinning and traditional farming are still practiced there.

Taped interviews were conducted with seven women ranging from sixty-five to eighty-eight years old. The women were questioned concerning their house and field cores as well as their philosophies and attitudes toward their life styles. It was revealed in this study that the traditional farm women of this area work throughout the year to keep the …
