Early Mormon Millenarianism: Another Look, Grant Underwood Jan 1985

Early Mormon Millenarianism: Another Look, Grant Underwood

Theses and Dissertations

Whether in its earliest or its most recent formulations, Mormon millennialism is essentially premillennial. At no time can it be considered postmillennial or a millennial. Along with a millenarian ideology, Latter-day Saints of the 1830s maintained a polarized perception of society and salvation. Apparently, it was not until the 1840s that Mormons began to explore the millennial implications of the "Vision" of the three degrees of glory. Other strands of thought unique to the earliest years of Mormonism are also considered. Furthermore, it is shown how millenarianism informed Mormon perceptions of Native Americans, missionary work, persecution, the Apostasy, and Zion. …

Persephone, Psyche, And The Mother-Maiden Archetype, John F. Makowski Jan 1985

Persephone, Psyche, And The Mother-Maiden Archetype, John F. Makowski

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

While the figure of the Mother Goddess has always fascinated students of Greek myth and religion (Vernant, 1965, 102-31), the subject has in recent years generated an enormous amount of scholarly literature which has illuminated the goddess’ role from a number of perspectives (Harding, 1971).* This expanding interest is due in part to exciting new developments in the fields of psychology, anthropology, and women’s studies, whose findings underscore the prominence of the Great Mother in the psychic and cultural life of humanity. Among the schools of thought that have produced some of the most provocative though not unchallenged ideas about …

Gertrude Kasebier: Her Photographic Career, 1894-1929, Barbara L. Michaels

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The photographer Gertrude Kasebier (1852-1934) is best known for her affiliation with Alfred Stieglitz and the Photo-Secession. However, as this study shows, she also conducted a successful career as a studio portraitist in New York, and contributed to popular illustrated magazines.

Chapters are devoted to Mrs. Kasebier's professional development, including her education at Pratt Institute, her successes in photographic publications and exhibitions, and her friendships with such photographers and artists as Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, F. Holland Day, Baron Adolf de Meyer, Robert Demachy, Frances Benjamin Johnston, and Auguste Rodin. Her portraits of Rodin and his studio are analyzed.

Winona Campus Life, Mass Communication Department

Winona Campus Life

Winona Campus Life was a weekly laboratory newspaper produced by the WSU Mass Communciation Department students and printed as a supplement to the Sunday Winona Daily News, which began in September 1983. The newspaper provided coverage of the four institutions of higher education in Winona: Winona State University, St. Mary's University, College of Saint Teresa, and Winona Area Vocational-Technical School. Ii. My Life, Maurice E. Perret

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In a high valley of the Jura Mountains, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Canton of Neuchatel, is the center of watchmaking. It is the city where I was born, 19 May 1911. My passion for travel, geography, history, railroads, maps, is inherited. Among the family papers on my father's side I found a little yellow book titled "Expenses during the travel in Italy" and dated 1799. It contains the schedule of the stagecoaches between cities in Italy and among the expenses are purchases of one map of the Cisalpine Republic, another map and the History of Rome by the Latin historian Polybius. My …

The Development Of The Eastern Africa Collection At Syracuse University, Robert G. Gregory Oct 1984

The Development Of The Eastern Africa Collection At Syracuse University, Robert G. Gregory

The Courier

With the inauguration of an African studies program in 1962, Syracuse University began the development of a unique collection of records relating to the eastern side of Africa. The most important part of the collection, the core, is related to Kenya, but there are also valuable records on the other countries of eastern Africa, nine in all, extending from Ethiopia to South Africa. Most of the items in this collection are on microfilm—an extraordinary holding of nearly four thousand reels of official and private records—but there is also much of value in supplementary books, periodicals, and documents in their original …
