The convergence of design and foresight is emerging as a powerful approach to navigate uncertainties and envision alternative futures. This study investigates how design and foresight are mutually facilitated based on the following questions: What are the current challenges in foresight practice? How can design meaningfully enhance foresight processes? Despite the growth of academic interest in frameworks such as experiential futures and design futuring, foresight practices of many organisations (particularly private corporations) remain limited in scope and imagination. Drawing on a practice-based perspective, this paper examines five organisational cases – the Japan Research Institute, the Taiwan Design Research Institute, the …

Script systems such as Nüshu—a unique writing system created and used exclusively by women— function as composite cultural carriers, integrating linguistic utility, visual configuration, and ritual practice. They embody identity and emotional bonds within specific communities. As digital culture dissemination accelerates, interactive video has emerged as a promising pathway for the regeneration of such cultural resources. However, existing digitalization approaches often suffer from limited sensory engagement, inadequate contextual restoration, and superficial participatory frameworks, which fail to convey the complex cultural structures and socio cultural significance of these systems. This study centres on the immersive interactive video installation Zuo Ge Tang …

A Reflective Lab Journal For Biodesign: Navigating More-Than-Human Sensibilities And Disciplinary Tensions, Jiho Kim, Iohanna Nicenboim, Joana Martins, Elvin Karana
IASDR Conference Series
This paper introduces reflective journaling as a tool for advancing biodesign practices, merging documentation methods from biology and design while integrating more-than-human sensibilities into laboratory practices. It highlights the need for tools that can flexibly support record-keeping across biology and design, balancing precision and accountability with iteration, creativity, and collaboration. Furthermore, it critically addresses calls to support care ethics and nurturing multispecies interactions within biodesign. Through an explorative review of diverse documentation formats, including laboratory notebooks and annotated portfolios, and informed by our own biodesign experiences, we introduce the Reflective Biodesign Lab Journal as a potential approach to address these …

"Weaving Home Over Time": Uncovering Layered Narratives Of Belonging Through Participatory Homemaking In Dementia Care, Natsumi Wada, Silvia Maria Gramegna, Alessandro Biamonti
IASDR Conference Series
What elements make you feel that this is “home”? This study investigates the multifaceted concept of “home” for people with dementia, extending beyond physical shelter to encompass sensory, emotional, and relational dimensions. Drawing on a qualitative, participatory co-design approach at GRACE Lab— a living lab embedded in a Milan dementia village—we engaged five residents with mild-to-moderate dementia, care staff, and design researchers in semi-structured interviews, observations, storytelling, and one-on-one workshops. A bespoke toolkit of icon cards and collage materials was used to elicit personal memories and co-construct individualized “home” narratives. Data coded in MaxQDA24 were analysed through a multimodal narrative …

Camp: Co-Designing For Anticipatory Re-Orientations In Policymaking Practices, Isabella Brandalise, Shanti Sumartojo, Lisa Grocott, Michael Mintrom
IASDR Conference Series
In this paper we discuss CAMP, a co-design method for practice re-orientations in public policy environments. Situated within the fields of design research, policy and futures studies, this method integrates practice-based research that investigates how co-design methods can contribute expanded approaches to futures thinking in policy contexts of uncertainty and emergence. More concretely, in CAMP we are designing for and with anticipation, understood as a capacity and a working concept. CAMP – organised by a metaphorical arc of preparing, camping and time-travelling – builds on interview-based insights, anticipatory capabilities and our co-design experiences. In this pictorial, we detail our intentions …

Making The Cabinet Of Bureaucratic Wonders: Productive Encounters With Non-Human Public Agents, Isabella Brandalise, Lucas Vaqueiro, Judy Park Lee
IASDR Conference Series
In this pictorial, we discuss the Cabinet of Bureaucratic Wonders (CBW), a collection and display of artifacts found in public sector facilities. The CBW invited participants to productive encounters with bureaucratic artifacts, such as coat hangers, stamps, and coffee carafes. Our goal was to investigate the agentic effects of office objects—non-human public agents—in steering conduct in institutions. At once an institution, an archive, and an intervention, the CBW appropriates formats of cabinets and employs design anthropology and participatory design methods to engage with public servants in the local and federal governments in Brazil and the USA. The CBW’s collection is …

This research explores the integration between objects, learning, and eco-social justice (ESJ) within undergraduate and postgraduate Design Management programs at an arts university in London, UK. ESJ is defined here as the interconnected pursuit of ecological sustainability and social equity. Using a case study approach, the empirical research examines how students engage with objects through their senses, curiosity, imagination, and peer-to-peer learning in a higher education classroom setting. The research aims to design and utilise a series of artefacts, ‘drinking vessels’, to stimulate critical reflection on ecological and social issues through object-based learning (OBL). While OBL is commonly used in …

Ai As Cultural Decoder: Multimodal Analysis Of Object Evolution In Chinese Domestic Space, Ziyuan Yang, Yuji Li, Limin Song
IASDR Conference Series
Historical design research often prioritizes grand narratives, while the cultural sig- nificance of everyday objects and their spatial contexts is frequently overlooked. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the evolution of "object-space" order in domestic environments through an integrated approach combining computer vision technology and natural language processing. By analysing image data across different periods, we identify object categories, placements, and spatial configurations, revealing micro-level organizational patterns and macro-level influ- ences of functionality and socio-cultural factors. Combining qualitative and quanti- tative methods—including interviews and computational analysis—we trace the transformation of Chinese residential spaces since the 1980s. Findings demon- strate how …

Redefining The Prototype: Contextualized Design Thinking Through Dong Carpentry, Peter Feretto, Ziwei Liu, Man Yan Lam, Pak Wai Ling
IASDR Conference Series
This paper reflects on the design and construction of a hybrid timber–concrete house in a Dong minority village in southwest China, developed collaboratively with local carpenters and villagers. Situated within the framework of design thinking, the study explores how traditional craftsmanship becomes not only a building technique but also a mode of inquiry that reframes the notion of prototyping. While conventional design thinking views the prototype as an iterative tool for testing ideas, this research positions it as a “contextualized prototype”—a participatory and relational process grounded in collective making and cultural negotiation. Engaging with Dong carpentry, where knowledge is orally …

Avian Experience In Urban Grotto: Ecological Soundscapes As A Biosemiotic Methodology In Multispecies Ethnographic Research And More-Than-Human Communication, Qingyu Zhang, Francesca Valsecchi
IASDR Conference Series
Ecological soundscapes, once primarily regarded as carriers of environmental information, are increasingly understood as immersive, embodied experiences that offer experiential and ontological access to more-than-human worlds. Situated within the framework of more-than-human design, this research challenges anthropocentric paradigms by foregrounding ecological soundscapes as dynamic, sentient agencies that convey environmental meaning and social structures among non-human species. Through field-based, autoethnographic inquiry on crow vocal is ation in Vienna, the project 1) articulates a hybrid methodological approach combining deep listening, soundscape walks, and bio acoustic analysis; and 2) establishes a sonification process that translates the data from the multispecies ethnographic research into …
The Choreography Of Sympoiesis: A Speculative Design To Reshape Modern Equestrian Concepts, Heyu Shao
The Choreography Of Sympoiesis: A Speculative Design To Reshape Modern Equestrian Concepts, Heyu Shao
IASDR Conference Series
This study explores the interactive relationship between humans and horses in equestrian practice, proposing that through long-term coexistence and riding, humans are not only tamers but are also shaped by horses. Using speculative design, the author created two new equestrian devices—the “Sym- Bridle” and the “WaveSync Saddle”—to visualize and amplify the subtle flows of force and sensory feedback between rider and horse. These works challenge the notion of one-way control, reframing riding as a process of mutual adjustment and embodied dialogue. Building on this, the author introduces the post-human figure “Equiarch”, imagining the bodily, behavioral, and cognitive transformations emerging from …

Cartografías Del Que(R)Er: Subjetividades En Tránsito Y Creación, Dan González-Ortega
Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer
I propose insights into a theology in motion that maps «Wanting» [que(r)er]—love, desire, and the search for a whole life—amid multiple transitions: forced migrations, the climate crisis, queer and digital (epochal) subjectivities. From a territorial and incarnate biblical hermeneutic, I reread Scripture from the perspective of marginalized bodies and territories. I integrate feminist, postcolonial, and posthumanist contributions to think of creation as living territoriality and subjectivity of revelation. Human mobility and the wounded Earth are understood as intertwined cries that challenge the world. I present a potential open spiral of communion, in which all subjectivity—human and more-than-human—is welcomed …
A Burlesque: The Shimmering Body Of Revealing, Lola Montgomery
A Burlesque: The Shimmering Body Of Revealing, Lola Montgomery
Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai
A Burlesque: The Shimmer Manuscript is a hybrid critical–creative work that examines burlesque as an embodied methodology and a mode of knowledge production. Drawing from my two decades as a performer–scholar, the work reframes glamour, desire, and adornment as epistemological practices rather than theatrical ornamentation. The project is significant in that it expands understandings of performance studies, autotheory, and feminist aesthetics by foregrounding the performer’s body as an intelligent, sensing, world-making apparatus.
The methodology is creative practice research and archive-driven, integrating backstage documentation, AI-assisted photomontage, and theoretical reflection. The work draws from poststructuralist and feminist frameworks (Irigaray, Deleuze & Guattari, …

Working Around Public Policy Towards A Grounded, Filipinized Philosophy Education, Ysabella Margarette M. Zureta
Working Around Public Policy Towards A Grounded, Filipinized Philosophy Education, Ysabella Margarette M. Zureta
Philosophy Department Faculty Publications
Amidst a backdrop of highly Westernized philosophy education in the Philippines and the continuous disregard of Filipino philosophy as philosophy, FPA Demeterio III relegates the question and debate of the existence of Filipino philosophy as “retrogressive.” He instead creates a grand taxonomy of Filipino philosophy that enumerates twelve forms of the discipline, which he whittles down to five forms with highly developmental potentials for both scholars and teachers alike to dedicate their study to. My study then attempts to answer the following research question: Is the present state-recommended undergraduate philosophy curriculum in the Philippines capable of developing Demeterio’s articulation of …
Enhancing Facial Expressiveness For Games Through Procedural Animation, Abhijit Varanasi
Enhancing Facial Expressiveness For Games Through Procedural Animation, Abhijit Varanasi
All Theses
Facial animation is one of the most important parts of bringing characters to life in video games and virtual experiences. This thesis explores a new approach to creating more expressive facial animations using procedural techniques and blended facial performance for more flexibility. The project uses FACS (Facial Action Coding System), which breaks down facial expressions into small, measurable muscle movements. By building a facial rig based on these muscle units, the character’s face can be animated in a way that reflects real human emotion. The animation in this work is not just pre-recorded, though it can respond in real-time to …
Reading Between Lines: Mapping El Orinoco Ilustrado, Guillermo Pupo Pernet
Reading Between Lines: Mapping El Orinoco Ilustrado, Guillermo Pupo Pernet
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines El Orinoco Ilustrado (EOI) by Joseph Gumilla as a layered textual and cartographic artifact central to the production of colonial knowledge in the Orinoco River basin. Moving beyond surface narratives of evangelization and exploration, it interrogates the sombras and silencios implanted in the Jesuit chronicle. Through an intradisciplinary approach combining literary analysis, archival research, and visual studies, the study reveals how EOI helped construct imperial visions of space, race, and resource extraction in eighteenth-century Spanish America. The dissertation is structured around six chapters. Chapter One outlines a theoretical framework. Chapter Two provides a longue durée historical context, …
Political Discoveries In A Žižek Substack Project Critical Digital Studies, Edward Sankowski, Betty J. Harris
Political Discoveries In A Žižek Substack Project Critical Digital Studies, Edward Sankowski, Betty J. Harris
International Dialogue
This review essay analyzes Slavoj Žižek’s recent turn to Substack as a publishing platform, examining both his motivations and the philosophical and political implications of this medium for contemporary critical theory. Sankowski and Harris argue that Žižek’s Substack writings continue long-standing themes in his work—anti-capitalism, ecological crisis, updated Communism, and the cultural dimensions of ideology—while also revealing notable shifts, including heightened pessimism about historical progress and new reflections on environmental catastrophe. The authors assess the advantages and pitfalls of Substack for intellectual discourse, including its circumvention of traditional editorial “censorship,” its contribution to information glut, and its role in fostering …
Autoethnography, Poetic Performance Narratives, And Pláticas As Dialogues Of Radical Love, Miryam Espinosa-Dulanto
Autoethnography, Poetic Performance Narratives, And Pláticas As Dialogues Of Radical Love, Miryam Espinosa-Dulanto
Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications
This piece examines Autoethnography, Poetic Performance Narratives, and Pláticas as decolonial methodologies that challenge the coloniality of knowledge and center voices historically excluded from academic discourse. These approaches honor traditions rooted in community, solidarity, and radical love, presenting lived realities without oversimplification while inviting readers to inhabit contradictions and imagine ethical possibilities for equity. Grounded in Latin American and Chicana/Latina/Indígena feminist scholarship, this work situates these practices within a legacy of decolonial epistemologies that resist dominant Western paradigms and affirm lived experience as a site of theory-making. Through this lens, the piece seeks to: (1) bear witness to shared experiences, …

How might these traditional ethno-ecological practices be applied to economic, agricultural, and tourism development in the Hutsul region? How might these traditional ethno-ecological practices be combined with contemporary approaches to encourage sustainable development in the region?
The research explores the devastating impact of the Russian …
Un-Imagining The Anglo Southwest And The Impossibility Of Trans-Scription, Lynnette M. Maphies
Un-Imagining The Anglo Southwest And The Impossibility Of Trans-Scription, Lynnette M. Maphies
Art & Art History ETDs
This thesis is an interrogation of the Anglo Southwest as a problematic and persistent regional and national construct. I propose that the Anglo Southwest emerged at a pivotal moment in the late nineteenth century during which Americanist approaches to geography, anthropology, and the arts, were being shaped to define the region and determine the production and distribution of knowledge. This resulted in an Anglo view of the Southwest as uninhabited, silent, and imaginary, which omitted the actuality of silencing Native voices, cultural appropriation, and the taking of resources and land. Army surgeon and amateur ethnographer Washington Matthews (1843–1905) serves as …
White Horse Village: A Northern Utah Ufo Narrative, Melissa Petersen
White Horse Village: A Northern Utah Ufo Narrative, Melissa Petersen
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
In the early 1960's a group of UFO believers, called Christ Brotherhood Inc., established themselves in Smithfield Canyon, UT and called their commune White Horse Village. A main house was built where the leader of the group lived and two or three smaller cabins were erected for the believers. Without running water they used an outhouse among them and built a small church where they would meet for lectures. Their beliefs centered around the popular movement of New Age spirituality of the time, which included scientific explanations for Christian beliefs including a belief in benevolent aliens as modern angels. Their …

Mississippi Dugout Canoes: An Ethnohistorical And Archaeological Analysis From 1538-1900s, Sean N. Mccraw
Master's Theses
Watercraft remains an overlooked aspect of Southeastern historical and archaeological scholarship. A more complete understanding has the potential to illuminate aspects of the human social process in anthropology and a more accurate construction of historical events. Recent Developments in Southeastern Archaeology, published in 2012, mentions the importance of the connections that water travel facilitated, but the work does not mention any serious investigation. While history has investigated the role native trails played in the development of the region, and while Andrew Lippmann has illustrated the agency that boat skills and watercraft gave Natives in the coastal North American region during …

Communication And Privacy Management Between Female Veterans, Their Military Voluntary Kin, And Biolegal Family Members, Carol Lee Tschampl-Diesing
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Military voluntary kin (MVK) refer to relationships between Service members and/or Veterans that they consider to be “like family,” despite lacking blood or legal ties. The purpose of this qualitative/interpretive communication study was to explore how female Veterans, who are the largest growing population of U.S. Veterans, discursively construct MVK relationships, navigate communication, privacy management, and boundary turbulence with their MVK and biolegal families (BLF). The researcher undertook in-depth interviews with nine female U.S. Veterans who reported having at least one MVK. The researcher posed four research questions, engaging in an interpretive analysis.
Participants described three ways they navigated interactions …
Musical Self-Efficacy Through Active Music Listening: A Phenomenological Approach, Amy Marie Fraser
Musical Self-Efficacy Through Active Music Listening: A Phenomenological Approach, Amy Marie Fraser
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Music is often perceived as a talent reserved for the naturally gifted, rather than a fundamental human ability. This study questioned that perception by examining how active music listening can develop musical self-efficacy and reshape attribution beliefs about musical ability. Using a phenomenological approach, this study explored the experiences of students in a university music appreciation course, investigating how structured listening exercises, peer interactions, and reflections contribute to their perceived musical beliefs and competence. Grounded in Bandura’s self-efficacy theory and Weiner’s attribution theory, the study considered whether musical engagement can be accessible to all and not limited by perceived talent. …
