Warfare And Woodlands: Tracing Environmental And Military History In The Hürtgen Forest, Cedar Williams
Warfare And Woodlands: Tracing Environmental And Military History In The Hürtgen Forest, Cedar Williams
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
This thesis explores what happens when war enters a forest. From 1944 to 1945, American and German forces fought a long, brutal battle in the Hürtgen Forest near Germany’s western border. The dark, wet, and heavily wooded terrain made the fighting unusually difficult. Soldiers struggled not just with enemy fire, but with freezing rain, deep mud, low visibility, and constant stress. The forest shaped how the battle unfolded and intensified its hardships.
But the war’s impact on the forest continued long after the soldiers left. Unexploded bombs and artillery shells littered the ground. During a heatwave in 1947, many of …
Restoring Balance: Choctaw Policy And The Environment In New Spain's Eighteenth-Century Frontier, Fior Daliso Garcia Lara
Restoring Balance: Choctaw Policy And The Environment In New Spain's Eighteenth-Century Frontier, Fior Daliso Garcia Lara
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
During the colonial period, Indigenous peoples in the Lower Mississippi Valley used their deep ecological knowledge to respond to imperial pressures. Eighteenth-century Louisiana was a contested borderland where Spain, France, and England vied for expansion through alliances, warfare, and trade with Native tribes. As European powers vied for control of the region, Native groups devised strategies to assert sovereignty over their territories and livelihoods. My dissertation examines the ecological history of the Choctaw and Spanish Louisiana from 1763 until the United States Indian Removal Act in the 1830s. It argues that imperial disputes over Indigenous lands compelled the Choctaw to …
A Pastoral River: Reimagining The Narrative Of Buffalo National River, Thomas Andrew Medford
A Pastoral River: Reimagining The Narrative Of Buffalo National River, Thomas Andrew Medford
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the creation of Buffalo National River (BNR) from the perspective of dispossessed landowners. A unit of the National Park Service in the Arkansas Ozarks, BNR has garnered little scholarly attention in this light, despite present-day resentment of the federal government by locals. The park was signed into law in 1972, capping a years-long debate about the fate of the river. Some had supported a tenacious U.S. Army Corps of Engineers effort to dam the river, others backed a well-organized, preservationist-led campaign to create a park, while on-the-river landowners typically preferred the status quo of private ownership. Many …
How To Do Things With Little Talking Tubes: Nonideal Speech Acts In The Digital Age, Anthony Holdier
How To Do Things With Little Talking Tubes: Nonideal Speech Acts In The Digital Age, Anthony Holdier
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this work, I develop a view about what it means to share a social or conversational context with others, as well as what is normatively entailed by doing so. Working from a broadly Austinian perspective about the moral foundations of language use and how we use words to position ourselves within social space, as well as from a generally Stalnakerian social ontology (demarcating groups by dint of aligned or overlapping sets of commitments), I present three papers demonstrating how nonidealized, ordinary language philosophy can make sense of complex, real-world phenomena. Through analyses of heretical utterances, context collapse, and chatbot …
The Cultural Significance Of The Architecture Of The Umm An-Nar Culture Tombs (2700–2000 Bce) In The Omani Peninsul, Khaled Douglas
The Cultural Significance Of The Architecture Of The Umm An-Nar Culture Tombs (2700–2000 Bce) In The Omani Peninsul, Khaled Douglas
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
Umm al-Nar tombs considered one of the most significant architectural landmarks of that period. Despite the diversity and variation in the plan and size of the tombs, they are considered homogeneous in their architectural style and components spread across the Omani Peninsula. These tombs distinguished by a special architectural system that differed from the rest of the other buildings mainly by their external appearance. The builder of these tombs made a great effort to highlight the external appearance of the tomb, which was represented by the using limestone in its construction, which was used exclusively in the construction of the …
Building Toward A Timbral Tool-Kit: A Practice-Led Exploration Of Timbre As An Inspirational Tool In The Composition Process, Kailan O’Dell
Building Toward A Timbral Tool-Kit: A Practice-Led Exploration Of Timbre As An Inspirational Tool In The Composition Process, Kailan O’Dell
Postgraduate
This exegesis is a practice-led investigation into the role of timbre as a tool of inspiration and musical expression in the composition process, with a specific focus on keyboard instruments. Two contrasting compositions for grand piano were recorded, then recorded again using four other distinct keyboard instrument timbres. The composer’s emotional perception of each keyboard instrument timbre was evaluated through reflective analysis, and with the use of the Geneva Emotional Music Scale. Knowledge of the emotional associations of the various timbres was used in the creation of four new compositions, one for each of the four distinct keyboard instrument timbres. …
Blood-Red And Flaming And True, Kate Gaskin
Blood-Red And Flaming And True, Kate Gaskin
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Blood-Red and Flaming and True contains poems that explore the immense feelings of love and loss tied to the relationship between parent and child. They chronicle my experience raising a neurodivergent child, as well as undergoing infant loss and navigating a U.S. medical system that is renowned for putting women and people capable of giving birth—especially BIPOC—at greater risk than other countries with similar resources. Through poems that inhabit a variety of forms, I sift through grief and joy while attempting to tap into the sublime state that underlies extreme loss and love. Throughout, I investigate how lyric poetry is …
Rhetorics Of Encounter: Toward A Biocentric Theory Of Discourse, Matthew D. Whitaker
Rhetorics Of Encounter: Toward A Biocentric Theory Of Discourse, Matthew D. Whitaker
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Encounters with more-than-human identities are transformative moments that stand to affect dispositional and bodily change in individuals. From close brushes with wild animals in National Parks to everyday interactions with local ecologies, encounters invite us to feel and think differently about the nature of our realities. In Rhetorics of Encounter: Toward a Biocentric Theory of Discourse, I draw from interdisciplinary perspectives to disrupt the idea of rhetoric as a representational medium, arguing that rhetoric occurs not just through textual exchanges of words and symbols, but through embodied moments of contact with other responsive beings. Invoking George Kennedy’s theory …
Technical Study And Conservation Treatment Of A Painted Wooden Figure, Attributed As An 18th-Century American Sternboard, Sutton Hastman
Technical Study And Conservation Treatment Of A Painted Wooden Figure, Attributed As An 18th-Century American Sternboard, Sutton Hastman
Art Conservation Master's Projects
This study focuses on the investigation of an object owned by the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) that was cataloged as an 18th -century American sternboard. The MAG shared concerns regarding the object’s provenance and whether the object was correctly identified. Technical analysis, including multimodal photography, x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) and wood identification, was conducted to inform the museum on the fabrication of the object and on its material components. The information collected was examined alongside historical research regarding the authenticity of the provenance, aiming to better understand the nature of the …
Intersecting Realities And Evolving Landscapes: Mapping Generative Ai Within The Framework Of Digital Rhetoric, Joshua Troy Nieubuurt
Intersecting Realities And Evolving Landscapes: Mapping Generative Ai Within The Framework Of Digital Rhetoric, Joshua Troy Nieubuurt
English Theses & Dissertations
The increased usage of [Generative] AI technologies (GenAI) in the 21st century has called into the question the rhetorical agency of these digital things. [Gen]AI has historically been framed within a Heideggerian “readiness-to-hand” dynamic in which it has been unilaterally conceived as a tool to be used by humans. This dissertation proposes that the GenAI assemblage is capable of being a co-actor in rhetorical spaces. To provide evidence for this stance This dissertation utilizes Actor Network Theory to map the actants within a GenAI assemblage. In doing so it allows for an understanding of the stakeholders (both human and non-human) …
Interior Ecology Of Rural Houses In Çamlıhemşin, İrem Karadeniz Dündar, Tülay Zorlu
Interior Ecology Of Rural Houses In Çamlıhemşin, İrem Karadeniz Dündar, Tülay Zorlu
Interiority
Rural houses form a significant part of the rural architectural heritage, showing the region's lifestyle in their spatial organisation, types of spaces, and interior furnishings. This study examines the spatial characteristics of rural houses in Çamlıhemşin from the perspective of ecosophy, Guattari's (2005) approach of emphasising the reciprocity and intertwining of social, mental, and environmental ecologies. The impact of living culture on the spatial organisation and residential usage norms within the dwellings was evaluated and elucidated through an analysis of data gathered from on-site surveys, relevant literature, and archival scans. These data are interpreted according to the different characteristics and …
Interior As Ecosystem, Paramita Atmodiwirjo, Yandi Andri Yatmo
Interior As Ecosystem, Paramita Atmodiwirjo, Yandi Andri Yatmo
Interiority
The idea of interior as an ecosystem views the emergence of interior as a dynamic and relational environment. Rather than viewing the interior as a static or enclosed environment, the ecological perspective considers the interior as an ecosystem, constructed by the systems of relations that involve a multiplicity of actors and entities. This issue of Interiority presents the emergence of various interior occupation and adaptation models that have emerged as an integral part of the ecosystem. The collection of articles in this issue presents a range of cases, ranging from traditional, modern, to contemporary lifestyles and contexts. The works demonstrate …
Family Homemaking Tactics In Tyneside Flats: Contemporary Interpretations Of Victorian Domestic Interior, Heba Sarhan, Rosie Parnell
Family Homemaking Tactics In Tyneside Flats: Contemporary Interpretations Of Victorian Domestic Interior, Heba Sarhan, Rosie Parnell
Interiority
This study addresses the gap between knowledge of adaptable design and the socio-spatial practices within the interior spaces of contemporary domestic settings. The aim is to support the sustainability of residential environments by enhancing the adaptability of dwellings to changing and diverse home life needs. Consequently, this paper delves into design features that enhance the adaptability of interior domestic spaces, informed by everyday family homemaking processes. Through a case study of the Tyneside flat, this paper illustrates challenges of transitioning this flat from Victorian to contemporary family home. Drawing on data gathered using multimodal methods, the findings demonstrate homemaking tactics …
Animal Interiority: Sentience And Spatial Perception, Raymund Königk
Animal Interiority: Sentience And Spatial Perception, Raymund Königk
Interiority
Interior design has traditionally prioritised human experiences, often neglecting ecological and nonhuman perspectives on interiority. This anthropocentric focus limits the discipline's ability to address the spatial and sensory needs of nonhuman persons, including teleost fishes. It overlooks interiority as a universal and relational phenomenon shared by all living beings. This research challenges these boundaries by proposing a biosemiotic framework that integrates the body, interiority, and inhabitation as interdependent constructs shaped by physiological, mental, and environmental interactions. By developing Jakob von Uexküll's (1982) biosemiotic schema, the study investigates the sentient experiences of teleost fishes to establish interiority as a capability inherent …

A Queer Feminist Response To The Racist Reception Of Halle Bailey’S The Little Mermaid: Misogynoir And Anti-Fan Facebook Users In Vietnam, Trung M. Nguyen
Journal of International Women's Studies
This essay examines the ways anti-Blackness is manifested in Vietnam through Facebook anti-fans’ reactions to Disney’s The Little Mermaid (2023) starring Halle Bailey, a Black American actress, in the role of Ariel. Analyzing the racist and colorist remarks within Facebook users’ comments and posts about the movie and utilizing misogynoir as the main concept of critique, the author demonstrates the phenomenon of anti-Black misogyny in Vietnam and focuses on the “I’m not racist, but…” trope. Uncovering the queer history of Hans Christian Andersen’s work, this essay adopts a queer feminist lens to defend the filmmakers’ choice to depict Ariel as …

Maritime (Im)Mobility And Heterotopia: Jeju Island In South Korea, Taehee Kim
Kritika Kultura
Jeju Island, located on the remote periphery of the Korean peninsula and historically a site of exile, has become a popular destination for domestic migration over the past decade. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s notion of heterotopia as a methodological framework and taking Jeju Island as an example to reveal “islandness,” this paper discusses how the island is imagined and represented in Korean society. From this perspective, Jeju Island is regarded exteriorly as a place outside the ordinary and internally as a heterogeneous place. Further, in the heterotopia of “illusion” and “compensation,” a sojourn on Jeju Island is expected and experienced …
Love Is A Molecular Island, Chun-Mei Chuang
Love Is A Molecular Island, Chun-Mei Chuang
Kritika Kultura
When clarifying Spinoza’s concept of affect, Deleuze declares, “Hope as such or love as such represents nothing, strictly nothing.” In this paper, I approach the question of love by taking a detour of nonhuman affinity. First, I present this paper as an experimental becoming that weaves through heterogeneous lines of thinking and creating. Second, explicating the Deleuzian-Guattarian notion of “abstract machine” alongside Isabelle Stengers’s figure of “inappropriable unknown,” I argue for viewing the cosmos and art as interconnected abstract machines that foster novel realities and communities. Third, I weave planetary thinking with an interdisciplinary approach to propose a “planetary art …

“Falling Short Of Our Humanity”: Shame And Queer Catholic Families, M.T. Davila
“Falling Short Of Our Humanity”: Shame And Queer Catholic Families, M.T. Davila
Religious & Theological Studies Faculty Publications
Queer Catholic Families (QCF) negotiate a complicated landscape of belonging and exclusion in the church that they love. In this dynamic, shame figures as a theological and moral qualifier of their experience when observed through the lens of the Catholic Church's teaching on sexuality and gender. Understanding how shame is experienced in these families, how it deepens a rift between families and the community, and how families find ways to nourish and preserve their links to the Church, ought to be a primary ethical and pastoral task of the Church.

Multikultura
This study examines the multimodal elements in the campaigns of STIVORO (Stichting Volksgezondheid en Roken), the Netherlands' first national organization dedicated specifically to tobacco control. The objective of this research is to analyze and describe the roles of visual and verbal elements in STIVORO’s campaigns in conveying anti-smoking messages to the Dutch public. This research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach and applies the theory of multimodality developed by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006). The research objects consist of eight posters, classified based on their target audience: active smokers and passive smokers. The findings reveal that visual and verbal …
On Expertise Change: The Use And Misuse Of Cultural Evolutionary Models, Ge Fang
On Expertise Change: The Use And Misuse Of Cultural Evolutionary Models, Ge Fang
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Expertise is a major topic in the thoughts of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle in the West, as well as in the thoughts of Daoist and Buddhist philosophers in the East. Expertise interests ancient philosophers due to the distinctive phenomenology of expertise, the puzzle surrounding the relationship between declarative knowledge and expertise, the practical process of expertise formation, and the use of expertise acquisition as a model for ethical and epistemic development. Philosophical interest in expertise has resurfaced in the last century, particularly regarding the phenomenology of expert performance, the relation between knowledge and expertise, and expertise-based models of ethical and …
Interdependence And Place In Mescalero Homelands, 1660-1865, Joseph A. Ukockis
Interdependence And Place In Mescalero Homelands, 1660-1865, Joseph A. Ukockis
History ETDs
This dissertation examines strategic relationships that Mescalero Apaches made among themselves and with non-Mescalero communities from 1660 to 1865. It references Mescalero place names in piecing together pertinent stories across their vast ancestral homelands, demonstrating regional continuities in social, political, and economic dynamics over two centuries. It argues that bonds of interdependence, rather than armed resistance, were critical in maintaining autonomy and the ability to move freely, conduct effective diplomacy to protect claims to homelands, access resources in times of scarcity, and form key alliances that presented possibilities for resistance to colonial domination. Central to these dynamics were Mescalero and …
Linguistic Identity: An Ostensive Definition, Kiesha Martin
Linguistic Identity: An Ostensive Definition, Kiesha Martin
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation offers an ostensive definition of linguistic identity illustrated through historical and literary examples, lived experience, and even public policy. Linguistic identity consists of three parts: idiolect, dialect, and linguistic agency. The idiolect is a speaker’s personal identity. The dialect is a speaker’s social identity. Linguistic agency is the synthesis of both. This is an attempt to clarify the nature of the relationship between language and the self. Linguistic identity is an aspect of identity that has received scant attention in philosophy—even amidst the focus on language and linguistic analysis in this discipline. The objective is to bring linguistic …

The Influence Of Colonialism On The Development Of Religious Life In Timor Leste, Abdul Kadirsyam Salampessy, Rahadjeng Pulungsari Hadi
International Review of Humanities Studies
Timor-Leste is the youngest country in the world with unique religious dynamics. The Catholic population increased rapidly after independence, while the Muslim population decreased drastically due to political dynamics. The presence of Mari Alkatiri, an Arab-descended Timorese Muslim who became Prime Minister (PM) twice, is a depiction of the presence of Islam in a Catholic-majority country. The long history of colonialism in Timor-Leste has greatly influenced the landscape of religious life there. In its development, the people of Timor-Leste live harmoniously and democratically.
