Tiny But Moral: How "The Adventures Of Little Tiny And The White Mouse" Portrays Children’S Moral And Social Responsibilities In The Civil War Era, Abigail Hagopian
CAFE Symposium 2026
Estimated to have been published between 1860 and 1866, The Adventures of Little Tiny and the White Mouse was one of many works for children published by Thomas W. Strong in New York during the American Civil War. The eight-page picture book examines morality and consequences through the misfortunate adventures of a young, yet moral, abnormally small boy named Little Tiny. The youngest of a Broom Maker’s three sons, Tiny’s jealous older brothers sell him to a circus, where he performs alongside a myriad of animals. Missing his father, the animals jump through a series of hoops to help Tiny …

Hercules In Myth And Animation: Masculinity And Heroism, Noah Bautista
Hercules In Myth And Animation: Masculinity And Heroism, Noah Bautista
CAFE Symposium 2026
Disney's Hercules is a model man in today's society who combines the best aspects of both masculinity and femininity. In the myths, however, Hercules was much different and did not act as such a bridge between femininity and masculinity at the time. Through other scholarly works, the way that masculinity, heroism, and instrumentalization are presented and used is examined. Mythological Herakles is found to be a much more aggressive archetype of a man rather than Hercules, who is based upon strength in moderation and a more social society. Each fit into the ideals of the society they come from, perpetuating …
Aquatic Interrelations In Malika Mokeddem’S Novel N’Zid (2001), Laura C. Klein
Aquatic Interrelations In Malika Mokeddem’S Novel N’Zid (2001), Laura C. Klein
Green Humanities: A Journal of Ecological Thought in Literature, Philosophy & the Arts
This article offers an ecological analysis of Malika Mokeddem's novel N'Zid (2001), moving beyond postcolonial and anthropocentric interpretations. It centers on the protagonist Nora's individuation, arguing this process is intrinsically linked to her evolving relationship with the aquatic environment from which she emerges. The article aims to situate N'Zid within an ecological perspective, particularly relevant in the Anthropocene, an era compelling a reassessment of humanity's place. Echoing Bruno Latour, addressing inter-relationality is essential as the stable physical framework of the Moderns becomes unstable. This view necessitates rethinking environmental issues and encourages a scientific interpretation of the novel, drawing on neurosciences, …

Justice For Animals In Climate Change Integrated Assessment Models, Bob Fischer, Avram Hiller
Justice For Animals In Climate Change Integrated Assessment Models, Bob Fischer, Avram Hiller
Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations
Integrated assessment models (IAMs) exclude individual non-human animal welfare, despite clear evidence that climate change will harm billions of animals through habitat loss, extreme weather, and ecosystem disruption. We argue that this is a significant moral oversight. Further, incorporating animal welfare into IAMs is technically feasible, using traditional economic methods or novel ones. Crucially, accounting for animal welfare in IAMs need not undermine considerations of justice for humans.

What Future For Moroccan Arabic In Morocco?, Zahra Zaid
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
Our reflection is about the statute of Moroccan Arabic and his future. We are going to demonstrate with concrete examples if this language constructs or deconstructs itself in the movement of modernism that Morocco knows. We will also see the degree of implication of its users in this construction / deconstruction.

Violent Linguistic Behavior: A Psycholinguistic Approach, Mourad Mawhoub
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
The violence is a subject that concerns psychologists, sociologists, lawyers, educators and anthropologists. It also interests linguists and psycholinguists. First of all, the violence is a linguistic sign, a speech act that expresses an emotional attitude. It is a kind of conflicting interpersonal communication relating two or several persons in an antagonist and conflicting context. In this article, we will try to treat some psycholinguistic aspects of the violent speech. We will show how violent voice is phonetically produced. We will extract physiological factors and acoustical-physical parameters of violent vocalization. We will also show how violent voice reflects aggressive feels …

Proper Names In The Fictional Works Of Guy De Maupassant, Ouafae Benzina
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
We suggest in this article studying the proper noun in the romantic work of Guy de Maupassant. For that purpose, we shall approach the problem of the definition of the proper noun which remains so far the object of several debates. Then, we shall distinguish three functions of the proper noun: the reference function, the function vocative and the function of appointment. We shall present, finally, a thematic classification of the proper nouns appearing in the corpus of the romantic works of Maupassant, supplied by the Hyperbase software.

The aspects of translation acceptability are not related only to the accuracy and clarity of the translation. They also cover the naturalness of translation. This study aims to reveal the degree of translation naturalness of the Quranic imperative verses. This evaluative study compares the translations of the verses by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (MORA) and the one made by Muhammad Thalib (MT). The study used embedded case study research. The findings of the study show that in general, the translations of the verses in the two versions have an acceptable degree of naturalness. However, …

Symbology, Social Imagination And Narrative Dynamics Of Amazigh Women In Some Oral Texts Of Ayt Khebbach (South-East Morocco), Anna Maria Di Tolla
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
This contribution is based on research into fifteen Tamazight stories collected from the Ayt Khebbach in the Tafilalt region of south-east Morocco between 2002 and 2010. The aim is to give an overview of some elements of Tamazight production, to describe very briefly the corpus of tales studied and to analyse some key categories concerning the Amazigh women of the Ayt Khebbach, in order to understand the structure of the meaning of the stories. Finally, an examination of the content of the tales will lead us to conclude with a reflection on the changes and innovations in the symbology, the …

What Goals? Which Point? Whose Purpose? A Critical Engagement With Sport Internalism, Francisco Javier Lopez Frias
What Goals? Which Point? Whose Purpose? A Critical Engagement With Sport Internalism, Francisco Javier Lopez Frias
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
In this article, I critique the dominance of internalism in sport philosophy and outline an alternative theoretical framework that integrates internal and external elements while striving to transcend the dichotomous language used to conceptualize sport. The analysis begins by claiming that internalism conflates three fundamental teleological aspects of sport: goals, point, and purposes. I argue that this conflation limits internalism’s ability to explain the complexity of sporting practices. By carefully distinguishing these elements, I illustrate their distinct roles in shaping sport and explore how they interact. I conclude by proposing that the alternative pluralist framework briefly sketched here enables a …

Role Of Depression And Anxiety On Brain Care Scores In A Primary Care Setting: A Preliminary Analysis Of The Bham Registry, Terina Lane Myers
ETDs from 2020-2029
While the field of brain aging research continues to grow at a rapid pace, there is still much to learn about how certain factors influence brain aging as well as when and how these factors can be intervened upon. Cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative diseases continue to pose a major obstacle to healthy brain aging and the better we understand the risk factors of these diseases, the greater chance we have at mitigation strategies and prevention. Previous research has identified key factors, consisting of physical, lifestyle, and socio-emotional aspects of life, which have the greatest impact on brain aging. These factors overlap …

Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
The excavation at the corner of Yehuda Ha-Yamit and Ha-Te‘uda Ha-Aduma Streets in Yafo uncovered remains dating to the eighteenth–twentieth centuries CE, including those of the late Ottoman and British Mandate neighborhood of al-Hureish. The earliest construction remains at the site, dated to the second half of the nineteenth century CE, suggest agricultural activity in the area or early residential structures with channels installed for drainage. This construction was later disrupted by a wall, possibly part of the eastern wall of the al-Hureish neighborhood, built in a subsequent phase. The main significance of the excavation was the al-Hureish neighborhood, founded …

Hollywood’S Toughest Stunt Clan Comes From Gossau, Canton St. Gallen:, Roland Schäfli
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Hans Epper from eastern Switzerland conquered Hollywood as a stuntman in the 1930s. His descendants continue to perform death-defying stunts for Quentin Tarantino and Steven Spielberg to this day. A family history like something out of a movie.
When Hans Epper arrived in New York on Whit Monday (the day after Pentecost) in 1926, he gave his name as “John” to the immigration authorities.
He discarded “Hans” just as he wanted to discard his origins: his past in the eastern Swiss municipality of Gossau. An official at the town hall of the industrial village in St. Gallen had scribbled “Off …
