This year the Cobb County School District is especially proud to sponsor the 2009-2010 All-State Art Symposium. This event brings together high school students and teachers not just in Cobb County but throughout the state of Georgia for one full day of workshops, a juried exhibition of student work, and an awards ceremony. We are very grateful to Kennesaw State and their tireless preparators for their commitment to partner with us to generate this year’s All-State Art Symposium. I wish to thank the regional coordinators who contributed untold hours to help with this event. Finally, as I hope most …

Research Expression through Art : Visual Studies Faculty
The works in this exhibition are part of two larger series of work, both of which are ongoing: the Reciprocal Interference project (互涉) and Time with the Sky (與天共度的時光).
The Reciprocal Interference project consists of two-person collaborative works by Carol Archer and artist-friends Sue Rawlinson, Sue Taylor, Johanna Trainor (Australia), Mary Grehan (Ireland) and Even Mak (Hong Kong). The Time with the Sky series of charcoal and watercolour drawings was begun during Archer’s residency at Bundanon, Australia in July 2009. Australian artist Arthur Boyd and his family gave their home, a splendid property on the banks of the Shoalhaven River, …
Visual Stamp, Jeanay Fullerton
Visual Stamp, Jeanay Fullerton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
I create images in a painterly manner illustrating a visual dialog, which suggests simultaneous moments, yet are actually a separated collision of moments and time. I have stretched these ideas from a slowed manipulation of time, to a calculated capture of segmented moments. My work undermines the importance of the decisive moment theory. This theory was the catalyst for my new series, VISUAL STAMP. "The decisive moment, it is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as the precise organization of forms which gives that event its proper expression." - …

A Location Aware P2p Voice Communication Protocol For Networked Virtual Environments, Gabor Papp
A Location Aware P2p Voice Communication Protocol For Networked Virtual Environments, Gabor Papp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Multiparty voice communication, where multiple people can communicate in a group, is an important component of networked virtual environments (NVEs), especially in many types of online games. While most research has been conducted on one-to-one communication, we focus on group communication. In this dissertation, we present the first measurement study on the characteristics of multiparty voice communications and develop a model of the talking and silence periods observed during multiparty communication. Over a total of 5 months, we measured over 11,000 sessions on an active multi-party voice communication server to quantify the characteristics of communication generated by game players, including …
Correspondences And Complementarity In Visual Music, Bill Alves
Correspondences And Complementarity In Visual Music, Bill Alves
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Visual music is an art form that implies intermodal connections between the senses but which has historically often failed to identify aesthetically satisfying correspondences. Artistic success does not automatically emerge in one medium when its elemental characteristics are mapped to those of an existing work from another medium. I offer examples from my own abstract animations with music, which draw upon John Whitney's concept of complementarity, a more intuitive correspondence at a higher level of aesthetic qualities, that of stasis and dynamism or tension and resolution.

Hassinger’s work provides a contemplative perspective on complicated issues of nature, culture and identity in relation to broader themes of race, gender, as well as politics, and social policy. Ethereal and evocative installations of branches, plastic bags, and twisted newspapers powerfully reveal …
Divining The Divine: Pop Mythology And Its Worth, James Hall
Divining The Divine: Pop Mythology And Its Worth, James Hall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My thesis compares classic mythology of cultures like ancient Greece to the mythology that has risen from the popular culture of contemporary western civilizations like America. While there are some differences, the two use the same archetypes that humanity has used for generations. In my work I use sculpture and photography to show their similarities and differences in form and story.

Flowers, Lies And Revolution: Contemporary Cuban Art, Jorge Daniel Veneciano, Sharon L. Kennedy, Britt-Marie Varisco
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
Flowers, Lies and Revolution surveys some themes that emerge in contemporary Cuban art, as revealed in three private collections in Lincoln, Nebraska. What a landlocked state and a sea locked nation share are the desires, comforts, and complexities of the other. This exhibition celebrates the transnational scope and vision witnessed in the breadth and focus of the three local collections: those of Karen and Robert Duncan, Kathy and Marc LeBaron, and Lisa and Tom Smith.
The collections represent the dominant trends of a new generation of Cuban artists that emerged in the last 30 years. Their work continues a tradition …
Divine Abstractions: Spiritual Expressions In Art, Susan J. Soriente
Divine Abstractions: Spiritual Expressions In Art, Susan J. Soriente
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
In Northern Europe during the early 1800s, artists began departing from the rationalism of the Enlightenment and the realism of traditional artwork. Their desire to express the mysterious and unseen essence of the divine through their artwork transformed the way we think about art. Called Romanticists, these artists valued subjective experience over reason and the individual experience rather than the collective. They abandoned conventional religious iconography and produced private, intensely meditative images, depicting the divine as something eternal and infinite. These artists believed that material reality hindered experiencing the divine. They sought to fracture the shell of physical reality to …

Head Coverings In The Virtual Umma: The Case Of Niqab, Heather Marie Akou
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
A growing body of literature points to the Internet as a place where Muslims are re-imagining themselves as part of a global, interconnected, religious culture—a new virtual umma. Along with issues such as politics, Islamic law, the interpretation of text, and procedures for rituals, hijab (modest dress) is a frequent topic of conversation. Compared to the physical world, where debates are heavily framed by time, place, and the habits of daily life, on the World Wide Web ideas and products flow much more easily. A new convert in Canada, for example, could use the Internet to read translated passages from …
Progressional Journeys: Compelling New Directions For Three “New Basketry” Artists, J. Penny Burton
Progressional Journeys: Compelling New Directions For Three “New Basketry” Artists, J. Penny Burton
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
The “New Basketry” movement of the late 1960s and the early 1970s was essentially spearheaded by Ed Rossbach. Many leading fiber artists and educators have been touched by this lasting legacy in some manner, whether from their own experiences as students of Rossbach’s, or merely from studying the fine technical and innovative basketry works that emerged during this period. Personal interviews with three dynamic women, who were active early on in this movement—Dorothy Gill Barnes, Patricia Hickman, and Kay Sekimachi—have revealed that an enduring engagement with materials remains central to their ongoing artistic practices. This has resulted in their exploration …

Geometric Abstraction In Pre-Columbian Tapestry And Its Enduring Influence, Susan Iverson
Geometric Abstraction In Pre-Columbian Tapestry And Its Enduring Influence, Susan Iverson
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Making art requires looking back and looking forward while maintaining a strong presence in the current cultural world. As a tapestry weaver, when I look back, I look at pre-Columbian weaving for inspiration. It is looking at the art and architecture of these ancient cultures that has allowed me to appreciate weaving as the basis for geometric pattern and abstraction. With an understanding that they developed their images for completely different reasons than those of the contemporary artist, I respond to their respect for the woven grid and their apparent desire to work with this structure instead of against it. …
