Combining The Historical And The Personal In Painting, Christopher A. Shotola-Hardt

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis project consists of five large scale, abstract paintings executed on Masonite panels. A major component of these paintings is the heavily built-up surface texture. In order to achieve this heavy, sculptural surface, plaster and acrylic media have been applied in an aggressive, spontaneous manner using variously-sized masonry knives. The paintings are largely action-oriented. They are non-neutral, and they bespeak a great deal of intensity on the part of the artist.

The five paintings contain emotional content based upon personal experiences and family history. In some cases, I began a painting with the subject matter clearly in mind. In …

Paul Ninas: Dean Of New Orleans Artists, Doug Waterfield

Publications: Art & Design

This thesis is an attempt to study in detail the career and life of one of the South's many overlooked painters, the New Orleans-based artist and teacher Paul Ninas (1903-1964). There are four basic catagories, shaped largely by subject matter and environment, in which the majority of Ninas' work can be classified: the Petris and West Indies paintings and drawings, scenes of New Orleans, mural commissions, …

Useless Web Pages: Conceptual Folk Art Or Post Modern Web Dada?, Benjamin Eakins

SWITCH

When discussing “useless” web pages in regards to their existence as works of art, particularly regarding their place within an art paradigm, there are many factors to take into consideration. In this article, Benjamin Eakins states that web pages which fall under the “useless” category may do so for numerous reasons such as providing meaningless data, presenting specific personal details, or offering irrelevant and insufficient information. Eakins discusses how these pages invite the viewer through the entertainment of confrontation and absurdity with the use of interactivity, randomness, and social purposes. In addition, the nature of these “useless” web pages are …
