The Ends And Means Of Public Art Making: A Case Study Of "Public Art" And "Art In Public" In The Portland, Oregon Metropolitan Region, Svetlana Gennadyevna Karasyova
The Ends And Means Of Public Art Making: A Case Study Of "Public Art" And "Art In Public" In The Portland, Oregon Metropolitan Region, Svetlana Gennadyevna Karasyova
Dissertations and Theses
The subject of public art has been prolifically but narrowly discussed in conjunction with controversies over particular public artworks. To investigate more broadly the complex aesthetic, institutional, social and political dimensions of public art, I examine a pluralistic landscape comprising nine arts organizations in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan region. A neo-Marxist framework defined by David Harvey organizes the case findings into four topics: material practices or public art outcomes; beliefs, values and desires; institutions and their rituals; and power and social relations.
I capture the differences among the arts organizations by portraying them as metaphorically inhabiting unique spaces in the …

Wunderground: Providence, 1995 To The Present, Judith Tannenbaum, Maya Allison
Books
For the past decade, Providence, RI, has been the site of a radical underground art scene, giving rise to a multi-faceted, unbridled aesthetic that is as distinct as it is influential. As a celebration of the movement, The Museum of Art at the Rhode Island School of Design is presenting the exhibition Wunderground. The companion publication, Wunderground- Providence, 1995 to the Present features a foreword by celebrated artist and designer Gary Panter, 128 pages of full color illustrations and 4 fold-out gatefolds. Artists, musicians, writers and students who created and witnessed the rise of the movement offer shorter texts providing …
Islamic Art: An Exploration Of Pattern, Carol Bier
Islamic Art: An Exploration Of Pattern, Carol Bier
Textile Research Works
As an historian of Islamic art in the Department of Art History at the Maryland Institute College of Art, I am continually learning as I endeavor to teach my students about pattern. Teaching about pattern in Islamic art has facilitated my own exploration of geometry in ways that also benefits my students. This visual presentation explores the results of a single assignment that pertains to coloring a linear plate reproduced in Bourgoin’s classic work [6], Arabic Geometrical Pattern and Design.

Persistence Of Vision: The Value Of Invention In Independent Art Animation, Pamela Turner
Persistence Of Vision: The Value Of Invention In Independent Art Animation, Pamela Turner
Kinetic Imaging Publications and Presentations
The focus of this investigation is in the realm of animation that straddles the ever-shrinking gulf between a screening and an exhibition, the theater and the art gallery. There is a subtle maturity and movement in the animation art world that not only continues but also extends the often-overlooked legacy of independent animation while engaging the conceptual dialogue of contemporary art. This tradition of an art aesthetic is passed from the early inventors who fashioned the necessary tools and images. The myriads of techniques and concepts evidenced throughout this history inform the current practitioner, just as digital technology and the …

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
One of Nebraska's most celebrated artists, John Robert Weaver is the subject of this retrospective exhibition documenting his long and prolific career, fittingly on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
Although a single exhibition, the artworks are displayed in two separate museums located 130 miles apart. The Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA), Kearney, and Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, have complementary missions, and John Robert Weaver: American Artist relates well to both. At the Museum of Nebraska Art, the emphasis is on art and artists connected to Nebraska, while Sheldon addresses American art. …

The Never-Ending Possibility Of Textile Art Education, Jan-Ru Wan
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Textiles have an intimate relationship in everyone’s life - whether one is aware of it or not. Textiles reveal so many stories and memories from every culture and society. My mother was an educator in a home economic school and I was trained by her hands; I was constantly busy helping her with quilting, embroidering, stitching, and making clothing. I grew up appreciating the dedication and skill in textile works. But it is the passion for story telling and the conceptual part of textile more than the desire to creating beautiful textile alone drove me toward the path of textile …

Textile Narratives In Book Form, Robin E. Muller
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
I am a weaver and textile artist who has moved into working in the book form. As a teacher at an art college I have been looking for ways to explain this movement by myself and several other textiles artists, like the late Shereen Laplantz who wrote a book on book arts techniques after many decades of making plaited baskets. I have the pleasure of doing that today with three esteemed colleagues: Laura Strand, of Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, Susan Warner Keene, Toronto, Bronfman award winner, formerly at Sheridan College, and Pam Scheinman, artist and historian Montclair State University, …
Unraveling The Story: Art Holmes’ War Correspondent Uniform, Courtney Stewart
Unraveling The Story: Art Holmes’ War Correspondent Uniform, Courtney Stewart
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
War correspondents have, and continue to risk their own personal safety in order to capture a story and communicate news. The first war correspondents from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Art Holmes and Robert Bowman, shipped out from Halifax in late 1939, and for the duration of the war vested themselves in standard military attire. Identical to that of the soldiers on the front whose stories they was capturing, Holmes and Bowman were given military uniforms. Although correspondents were neither soldiers nor members of the armed forces, they were given military priority and respect by association of what this uniform signified. …

Narratives Among The Mola Blouses Of The Kuna: A Blending Of The Old And New Worlds, Teena Jennings-Rentenaar
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
The Kuna of the San Blas (Kuna Yala) region of Panama are highly regarded for the mola panels that they make using appliqué and reverse appliqué. These panels form the front and back of blouses that the women and their daughters wear both in their daily lives and for special occasions. Mari Lynn Salvador found, when doing her research on the making of mola panels, that there are different types of designs and that these categories are recognized by the Kuna women themselves as being distinct. Each of the different categories requires a different approach to its manufacturing process.

Historical Memory And Empathy In Studio Art Classroom, Karen Hampton
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
During the fall of 2002, I was a guest instructor at California College of Art and Craft in Oakland, California, and was asked to create a course inspired by my artwork and research. The course I created was titled, “Slavery, Internment and Transcendence,” subtitled "Artists of Color Who Use Historical Memory." The course involved the study of contemporary artists, their artwork and the historical context in which the artwork was inspired and fashioned
Students were taken inside the artist's world, learning to analyze artwork from the perspective of historical memory. By using "sense of place" curriculum, which included an understanding …

Swept Under The Carpet: Subtle Tales From The Back Room, Michele Hardy
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
According to Ruth Phillips, we are poised to enter the second museum age. For many years now museums has been the object of serious criticism. First Nations have critiqued museums’ authority to represent and possess culturally significant objects. There has also been a shift away from object-based research—undermining the very foundation of museums. They have been forced to re-evaluate who they are, whom they are for, and what to do with all that stuff in the storerooms. Since the mid-1980’s there has been growing responsiveness to indigenous peoples concerns, efforts to share authority, and a re-envisioning of museums as places …
Nationalism: Pubic Voices, Private Lives, Jerry Bleem
Nationalism: Pubic Voices, Private Lives, Jerry Bleem
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
For millennia fabric banners have served as indicators of political affiliation and national allegiance. Flags are steeped in the foundational mythology of a country, region, or group. Flags sum up moments of glory (while ignoring ignominious history). Flags foster a pride in identity that can unite people. Flags are the stuff of swelled chests and Independence Day parades.
But countries are composed of individuals who have private histories, relationships, hopes and dreams. Some people (or their ancestors) know firsthand their country’s failure to offer equality and justice to all its citizens. Most people use this national symbol to shade patriotism …

Wandering Minstrels – The Tale Of The Phad, Vandana Bhandari
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Decorative cloth has been used in India to portray folk epics as a means of entertainment and as a substitute for theater and other types of performing arts. I quote “The transmission media of the folk epics are large paintings, instrumental music, dances, songs, riddles, jokes, costumes and other equipments.”
“The tradition of narrating legends with the visual aid of painted panels is found in early literature - in Bhagavatisutra (third century), Visakhadatta’s Mudraraksasa (fourth century), Bana’s Harshcharitra (seventh century), and Vaddaradhane (10th century). Narrators in the Indian States of Bengal, Gujarat and Maharashtra use painted paper scrolls and those …
