Implementing Building Information Modeling In Public Works Projects In Ireland, Barry Mcauley, Alan V. Hore, Roger West Jul 2012

Implementing Building Information Modeling In Public Works Projects In Ireland, Barry Mcauley, Alan V. Hore, Roger West

Conference papers

The Irish State in recent years has suffered huge financial losses in the public works sector, which has now pushed the Irish Government to explore new ways of controlling cost. This background lead to the introduction of the Capital Works Management Framework in 2007 which aimed to support the certainty of outcome in terms of cost and quality, as well as improved risk management, through the implementation of fixed price contracts. In order to successfully compete within this framework it is recommended by the authors, that Irish Government moves towards the legal mandating of BIM. This can ensure a greater …

Digital Morphogenesis: A Computational Housing Typology, Bryce R. Willis May 2012

Digital Morphogenesis: A Computational Housing Typology, Bryce R. Willis

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Architects have integrated computers into firms to streamline the documentation process and which has allowed for the integration of rapid prototyping and digitally driven technologies and tools. Although this has increased the efficiency of the traditional approach to architecture, an alternative methodology has the potential to adapt the computer’s role in architecture, making it a more integrated part of the design process. Within a traditional process, software allows a designer to build the documentation of his designs around the relationships between elements. Instead, new methodologies can be used to imbed the nature of an architectural design within a system of …

Designing Resilience To The Potential Failure Of An Oil-Dependent System, Michelle A. Morehead May 2012

Designing Resilience To The Potential Failure Of An Oil-Dependent System, Michelle A. Morehead

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

American, post--World War II suburbia exists in a unique form different from previous development in the U.S. and the rest of the world. While suburbs in European countries are typically defined as outlying areas within a city’s limits, American suburbs have no legal definition, and are frequently within a metropolitan area, but outside of the main city’s limits. Suburbs are independent in land-use, taxing and regulatory powers, and therefore may have separate governing bodies and interests than the city they have proximity to. With post-war wealth, credit, and mass production of the automobile, Americans in the 50s were able to …

Design Capitalism, Emily Van Court May 2012

Design Capitalism, Emily Van Court

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Social business examples are few in the architecture profession. In fact, humanitarian architecture as a concept is new to the field. Left to non-profits and academics (Architecture for Humanity and Rural Studio respectively), humanitarian architecture is not traditionally regarded as a profitable business.

However, other fields have found ways to combine a social initiative and a profitable business. Grameen Bank founder Dr. Muhammad Yunus not only defined the term, but created the model for social business. Subsequently, many non-profits have followed suit and applied the successful system, increasing the capacity for social change within their fields.

My thesis will aim …

Architecture As Drawing: Representational Space Architecturally Transformed, Andrew Arkell May 2012

Architecture As Drawing: Representational Space Architecturally Transformed, Andrew Arkell

Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis project was motivated by the premise that a drawing could take on architectural meaning beyond its initial performance as a re-presentation of an architectural idea. Initially, there existed the goal to create a drawing that was architecture. In the creation of a process wherein the drawing is the research, however, there comes an understanding that a drawing may never be literal architecture; although, the means by which the drawing is created might be architectural, or at the very least, speak to ideals which are fundamental to the creation, to the process, of architecture itself.

Teaching Evidence-Based Design To The Beginning Design Student: Educator Perceptions About Incorporating Research In Beginning Design Education, Deborah Rushen Dunlap Jul 2011

Teaching Evidence-Based Design To The Beginning Design Student: Educator Perceptions About Incorporating Research In Beginning Design Education, Deborah Rushen Dunlap

Interior Design Program: Student Creative Activity

Educators’ perceptions influence academic protocols regarding the level at which evidence-based design is introduced to design students. Evidence-based design, a research methodology based on quantitative and qualitative inquiry that informs design decisions, permeated healthcare design to the point that the two are almost synonymous (Hamilton and Watkins, 2009; Nussbaumer, 2009). As this research based approach spreads throughout the profession, multiple specialty areas in architecture and interior design adopt evidence-based design into their methodologies (Hamilton and Watkins, 2009). These “developments in design practice now impinge directly upon education” (Zuo, Leonard, and MaloneBeach, 2010, p. 269). Teaching evidence-based design to design students …

Hydro[Lodge]Ic, Brittany Mcclure

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Over 70% of the world’s surface is covered with water, making it seem uninhabit-able. Or is it? From very early accounts in history man has been able to survive living on water for extended periods of time. Historically this time was a result of traveling, not necessarily a desire to live on the water. Even today, structures built for the aquatic environment fit more into the realm of tourism and leisure or a type of science / maritime study space, than a permanent dwelling. Living under or on water is certainly not a new idea. There are many science fiction …

Parametricism (Spc) Acadia Regional 2011 Conference Proceedings, Janghwan Cheon, Steven Hardy, Timothy Hemsath

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

In today’s computer savvy world it is no longer interesting to discuss digital tools purely as means in themselves. The growth of abstract exponential systems or the generation of modulated patterns for their own sake simply strain justification in light of real-world concerns such as climate change, decaying cities, and economic crises. However, the impact of explicit logic and computational thinking on design and design process remains substantial. So we continue to pursue evolving digital techniques in hope that they prompt innovative design strategies and creative organizational, effectual, or material innovations that align with the evolving technologies which shape contemporary …

Exploring How Residential Communities In The Rural Southern Appalachian Mountains Are Branded As 'Green:' A Qualitative Analysis, Ole Sleipness Aug 2009

Exploring How Residential Communities In The Rural Southern Appalachian Mountains Are Branded As 'Green:' A Qualitative Analysis, Ole Sleipness

All Dissertations

As environmental issues have gained media prominence, a majority of Americans now consider themselves to be environmentalists. Producers of real estate development have responded with communities, branded to differentiate themselves from their competition through sagas, imagery, and symbols that communicate the values and identities that align with those of their targeted consumers. Host to a rapidly expanding population, the Southern Appalachians are home to a wealth of new communities, many of them branded as 'green.' Building on theoretical foundations in visual design, environmental rhetoric, and landscape interpretation, this research utilizes a collective case study analysis to illustrate how texts, images, …

Reformulating Urban Landscapes: Figure-Ground Maps, Cesar Torres Bustamante Jan 2008

Reformulating Urban Landscapes: Figure-Ground Maps, Cesar Torres Bustamante

Landscape Architecture

A type of map traditionally used in the analysis of urban form is figure‐ground, a drawing that traditionally depicts the buildings as figures against a visually contrasting ground. It finds certain antecedents in Gestalt psychology, as both drawings rely on the perceptible difference between figure and ground. However an unwanted extrapolation from Gestalt is the imposition of hierarchies, indispensable for visual segregation of figure and ground, but detrimental for the potential of figure‐ground as mapping. Mapping is a creative and cognitive activity, ruled by processes of selection and schematization. The potential of the figure‐ground map to reveal new relationships and …
