Low and Moderate Income (LMI) housing is an integral part of Smart Growth planning; however growth boundaries, taken alone, can constrain the supply of available land driving up housing costs. In many states, with more integrated growth management plans, these costs are made up for by incentives for more compact and integrated housing within well served, mixed use town and village centers; however, in Rhode Island the absence of real incentives and the slow pace of local reforms to outdated and exclusionary zoning policies has created some tension between Smart Growth and LMI housing advocates.

The quality of the work in this book is all that was expected and more. This is the beginning of a journey that will impact all eSwatini. The Architecture School at Andrews University will remain a significant companion on this wonderful journey. We consider these children as Hope Seekers and our coffee table book about them shows the courage and ingenuity they display as they strive to survive. We are indeed all ‘hope seekers,’ except that we have options and they don’t. We praise God that there is now an open window to bring real hope to a population of …

Ampthill Neighborhood Market Analysis & Community Strengthening Plan, Claude P. Armstrong
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects
This is a Strengthening Plan in support of a future commercial corridor development in the Ampthill Neighborhood of Chesterfield County. It is a part of a larger strategy along Jefferson Davis Highway to strengthen ties between neighborhoods and businesses. The Plan encourages economic and community development to create a welcoming destination. A foundation for economic development results and a community road map to assist in navigating discussions, leveraging assets and upgrading transportation infrastructure. This traditionally working-class neighborhood south of Richmond has experienced major demographic change. For others to venture into the area and “get to know it”, Ampthill may …
Best Practices For Urban Coliving Communities, Rachel Osborne
Best Practices For Urban Coliving Communities, Rachel Osborne
Interior Design Program: Student Creative Activity
Coliving, a new typology of housing design, has recently been gaining in popularity. Coliving is a form of rental housing that seeks to create community among its residents by providing features such as extensive shared spaces and community managers paired with typically small, furnished private spaces. Little architectural or interior design research is available to describe this emerging typology, and no best-practices or guiding principles exist to aid designers in making informed decisions when designing or evaluating coliving spaces.
This thesis uses a mixed-methods approach to understand the composition of existing coliving facilities as well as the motivations and preferences …
An Examination Of What Motivates Utah Residents To Adopt The Practice Of Rainwater Harvesting, D. Wayne Honaker
An Examination Of What Motivates Utah Residents To Adopt The Practice Of Rainwater Harvesting, D. Wayne Honaker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Although most of the earth is covered in water, a very limited amount of that water is fresh water, which is essential to our survival. Therefore, it is imperative that we do all that is possible to conserve and protect our extremely limited water resources, especially in arid regions such as the American West. While there are many ways and means to protecting and preserving our water resources, this thesis focuses on the strategy of rainwater harvesting (RWH) as it is done throughout the state of Utah. RWH is defined as taking the precipitation that falls on our built structures …

INTRODUCTION: TING CHIN, MICHAEL DUDDY, AND JASON MONTGOMERY
As the Department of Architectural Technology at the New York City College of Technology embarks on its path to achieve accreditation by the National Architecture Accrediting Board (NAAB) for a Bachelor of Architecture, this issue of TECHNE- decidedly focused on architectural education. Over the last two years through countless discussions within our department and college, and with architecture faculty from other universities and currently practicing architects, we have been questioning the value, purpose, and means of an architectural education. As educators in architecture we are responsible for exposing students to a multifaceted …

In response to the clear need for faculty training, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) developed and funded Project ExCEEd (Excellence in Civil Engineering Education) which is celebrating its twentieth year of existence. For the past two decades, 38 ExCEEd Teaching Workshops (ETW) have been held at six different universities. The program has 910 graduates from over 267 different U.S. and international colleges and universities. The ExCEEd effort has transformed from one that relied on the grass roots support of its participants to one that is supported and embraced by department heads and deans. This paper summarizes the history …

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Architecture is commonly thought of as individual buildings, usually someone would think of an enclosure, that we often think of it as an "interior" space, while our surroundings outside of these enclosures are considered "exterior" space. Transitional spaces bridges the gap between solely interior and solely exterior. These spaces, in being transitional, take people from outside and, through the overlap of the outside nature and building, transfer individuals to a destination defined as inside. In doing this, transitional space helps to ease architecture's relationship with the natural environment, creating a relationship with each other rather than a conflict. This thesis …

Sylvan Dell Nature Park & Farm: An Innovative Approach To Recreation, Conservation, And Education, Brian Auman
Sponsored Events -- List
The Sylvan Dell Nature Park and Farm implements a comprehensive strategy for conservation, recreation, and education, while connecting residents with Williamsport's, and the region's, bountiful natural resources. The Sylvan Dell project encourages smart growth and asset-based development in its land-use ordinances and by connecting existing natural areas with a network of public access trails and parks. The park makes the most cost effective use of limited resources by achieving many ‘stacked benefits’, including high-quality recreation, innovative stormwater management, and accessible environmental education.

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The rapid growth of world population along with the sprawl growth of towns and suburbanization, has affected the human life and its surrounding nature dramatically. The fact is this level of growth is not sustainable with the current patterns of development. Most cities all around the world are designed in a way that encourages car dependency which is harming the environment and human health.
During the past decade, urban planners formulate new principles of land use development to preserve the environment and protect public health, safety and general welfare of the citizens. These concepts are characterized by some movements such …

Creative Identities: From Divergence To Fusion In Cultural Exhibits To Overcome Human-Related Cultural Heritage Deterioration, Khloud Khalid Eldamshiry, Mohamed Hesham Khalil
Architectural Engineering
Cultural heritage is a critical symbolised tangible element that depicts memory and characteristics of a previous civilisation. It is considered the present use of the past in the moment and should respond to the today’s needs and demands. However, the gap between its identity and the divergent identities of individuals, especially creative ones, lead to either positive or negative identities outcomes, depending on the type of memory in which the creative expressionism becomes the need. The negative identity outcomes lead to human-related deterioration to the physical cultural heritage especially that creativity differs from an individual to another and the same …

The conceptual framework of Indigenous placemaking is defined as a fundamental and complex approach to the processes of the Indigenous planning paradigm. To identify placemaking is to acknowledge and recognize Indigenous place-based knowledge as essential planning tools when working with Indigenous communities. Colonization and western acculturization adjudicated the divestment of Indigenous languages and cultures through western policies and Indian school education. Today, Indigenous worldviews are tainted with extreme levels of sociocultural disparities. The implementation of Indigenous planning processes establishes an understanding to Indigenous community-building through shared knowledge and collaboration. The concepts of placemaking thus enables and empowers Indigenous communities to …

In The Folds: Transforming A City’S Identity Through Art And Social Purposes, Yichien Cooper
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This autoethnographic narrative retraces my four-year journey as an art commissioner for a city that is transforming beyond the stigma associated with a significant role in early nuclear weapons to a growing agritourism industry. The looming pressure for change is just like when tectonic plates push against each other until there is a quick release, causing earthquakes and eruptions. In the midst of the changing forces, I consider how the arts fold in. There are two purposes in this article that investigates the complexity between civic development and art. First, I will (re)define and (re)frame (Short & Turner, 2013) the …

The Automation Of Bim For Compliance Checking: A Visual Programming Approach, Jonathan Reinhardt, Malachy Mathews
Conference papers
A study by FIATECH confirmed that human interpretation causes inconsistencies in applying building compliance & regulations (Solihin & Eastman, 2015). Producing, updating and quality assuring such processes is inconsistent and unreliable (Preidel & Borrmann, 2016). A barrier to interpretation of building regulations is that software is designed by developers that are separate to local authorities (Solihin & Eastman, 2015). The current literature suggests Singapore, Norway, USA & Australia have all implemented BIM automation systems for building regulations. This study reviews current automation systems and based on this proposes a system of creating a checking system is efficient in the control …
Rebuilding Silicon Valley - An Assessment Of The Silicon Valley Corporate Campus And The Potential For Suburban Sustainability, Eden Lindeman
Rebuilding Silicon Valley - An Assessment Of The Silicon Valley Corporate Campus And The Potential For Suburban Sustainability, Eden Lindeman
Master's Projects and Capstones
Silicon Valley is the San Francisco Bay Area’s economic powerhouse and is herald for its innovation and success. However, Silicon Valley’s urban design is unsustainable and characterized by remote and large corporate campuses that contribute to job sprawl and heavy traffic congestion. Many of the buildings are also not performing at an efficient level and are due for deep overhauls to cut back energy consumption and costs. The inevitable effects of climate change continue to loom large over the world, heightening the importance for the built environment to be reformed into an environment that can mitigate and adapt to climate …
The Cost Of Direct And Indirect Potable Water Reuse In A Medium Sized Inland Community, Jason Glenn Herman
The Cost Of Direct And Indirect Potable Water Reuse In A Medium Sized Inland Community, Jason Glenn Herman
Architecture and Planning ETDs
In the face of increasing population, development pressures, and climate change, many regions around the world face freshwater shortages. Planned potable water reuse can improve sustainability and reliability of water supplies by providing drinking water from wastewater. Most potable reuse research has focused on large coastal communities with relatively high mean household incomes. However, the US Department of Interior predicts that “hot spots” of conflict over water in the arid West are “highly likely” in numerous small-to-medium-sized inland communities with low-to-moderate household income levels. Potable reuse options may be different for larger, wealthier coastal communities as compared to small-to-medium-sized inland …

The building sector in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has experienced a tremendous expansion in the last forty years due to population growth and economic development. Presently, the UAE has one of the world’s largest energy consumption per capita, with the building sector accounting for 70% of the consumed energy. In the last decade, the government intensified its efforts to implement stringent environmental regulations and schemes by mandating environmental policies and regulations. It introduced “Estidama”; the local sustainability framework, and the Pearl Building Rating System (PBRS) to promote the development of sustainable buildings. All governmental buildings must achieve …
Integrating Tiny Houses Into The American Urban Fabric: A Comparative Case Study Of Land Use Policy Change In The Carolinas, Krista Evans
Integrating Tiny Houses Into The American Urban Fabric: A Comparative Case Study Of Land Use Policy Change In The Carolinas, Krista Evans
All Dissertations
The concept of the American dream, manifested in the ownership of a detached single family home, remains a driving force in the housing market. Historically, small homes have held a prominent niche in this dream in both urban and rural areas. However, the expansion of restrictive urban land use policies to protect property values, paired with the rapid diminishment of the American middle class, has made homeownership increasingly difficult to achieve. The tiny house movement has emerged as a means to promote small, affordable, and sustainable home ownership. However, the construction of tiny homes, or even the traditional cottage, is …

Regenerative Refugee Housing: Creating Temporary Housing With Low Environmental Impact, Erika Guldner
Architecture Thesis Prep
Refugee settlements often have a negative environmental impact; by promoting options for sustainable development from the outset, this can be avoided. A plan for a refugee settlement was made, along with a plan for the individual residential units. To expedite the construction process, units were divided into components. These components could be easily assembled on site. Once the refugee settlement is no longer needed, components can be used for other purposes, such as, affordable housing or the components themselves can be broken down to be either recycled or used for other purposes.
