This thesis is an examination and description of the United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management's program for the management of cultural resources in the State of Oregon. The author has worked for the Bureau from March, 1975 to the present as a District cultural resource specialist.

The major emphasis of the thesis is a description and explanation of the Bureau's cultural resource management program and its major problems in relation to the taxpayer and archaeologists.

During late January and early February 1978, archaeological testing was carried out in an area north of Olmos Dam, San Antonio, Texas (see Fig. 1) by personnel from the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio. This work was performed under contract between CAR and the San Antonio River Authority.

Since December 1976, the Center for Archaeological Research has carried out a succession of archaeological surveys of proposed sewer line routes and sewage treatment plant construction in the San Antonio area (Fox 1977; Fox, McGraw and Valdez 1978). The data recovered, archaeological sites recorded and recommendations for future work have been provided to Radian Corporation for use in preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement.

In late March 1978, Tennessee Gas Pipeline (Houston) authorized the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, to carry out Phase II investigations along the proposed route of the Del Norte pipeline, southern Texas. The Center had conducted an initial historical and archaeological assessment of the pipeline route in 1977 and had recommended subsequent field work (Phase II) in order to better evaluate some of the findings made at that time. This proposal was accepted by the City of Menard in a letter dated April 23, and the survey was accomplished on May 1 and 2 by Thomas C. During February through April 1979, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, carried out an intensive archaeological survey at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, Llano and Gillespie Counties, Texas. A summary of the 120 newly recorded sites is presented, along with more detailed information on shovel testing, auger testing and two excavated sites. Data from faunal and constant volume analyses at the excavated sites are described and tabulated. Appendices include documentation of a local collection, an artifact inventory from an earlier survey, and an analysis of phytoliths from one of the excavated sites.

A detailed history of the family and the site and a complete architectural recording and analysis are included. Archaeological investigations of standing structures and sites of former structures are described. The results of the investigations are discussed in relation to archaeological investigations at other rural sites.
