The Ruben Hancock Site (41TV875) is located at a position on the centerline of the extension of Parmer Lane from FM 1325 (Burnet Road) to FM 620. The site was found during a survey of the right-of-way conducted by the author on the 9th of August, 1984. Other sites were found during the survey but were too ephemeral or too disturbed to warrant further investigation. It was judged at the time of the survey that the Ruben Hancock Site, because of its disturbed condition and the presence of metal and glass artifacts, warranted further investigation. Improvements to US 67 in Shafter, Presidio County, Texas, will affect three cultural areas within existing or proposed right-of-way. These areas include (1) a small early twentieth century dump designated Site 41PS344, (2) Site 41PS109 which comprises two small associated historic structures, and (3) a relatively recent concrete slab. Site 41PS344 lies to the southwest and outside of the Shafter Historic Mining District, while Site 41PS109 and the concrete slab are located within the boundaries of the Historic District. The Shafter Historic Mining District is located along the floor and flanks of the low canyon of Cibolo Creek adjacent to and crossed by US 67, approximately 20 miles north of Presidio County, Texas (Fig 1) From the US 67 bridge, the creek flows to the southeast to a vertical cut made by the creek in the mountain massif. From there it flows due west to another steep rock bank and turns south.

Testing of Site 41HK28on County Road 166 in Haskell County, Texas, was performed on July 8-9, 1985, to determine eligibility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places or nomination as a State Archaeological Landmark, and to determine site depth, cultural context, and archaeological significance. The site is located on a terrace overlooking California Creek, a tributary of the Brazos River system. The site has been impacted by construction of a county road and bridge, by severe erosion and deflation, and by root plowing to remove mesquite trees from the area. Prehistoric Site 41HR564, located in Harris County, Texas, near Keegans Bayou and US Highway 59, was tested in August 1985 to determine eligibility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places and State Archaeological Landmark status. Testing also was conducted to ascertain site depth and archaeological significance. No cultural materials were recovered as a result of the test and no further investigations are recommended.

Testing to determine the significance as a State Archaeological Landmark and to determine eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places was undertaken in June 1984 of Site 41MX23, Morris County, Texas, on FM 3421. The test shows that portion of the site within the project’s right-of-way to be sparse in cultural material. The deposits containing the material vary from very shallow to moderate in depth. Testing indicates that insufficient cultural materials exist within the area to be impacted to warrant further investigations.

Archaeological Site 41RB31 is a small isolated site located on the edge of the cap rock overlooking Red Deer Creek in Roberts County, Texas. Testing of portions of the site within the highway project revealed the site to be sparse, and no further work is recommended. The site does not meet the criteria for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places or designation as a State Archaeological Landmark.

Prehistoric archaeological Site 41CC233 consists of a burned rock midden and a light lithic scatter outside the right-of-way of US 87 in Concho County, Texas. Testing within the right-of-way was undertaken to determine if the site did extend into the right-of-way area, to determine eligibility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places, and to determine site depth and archaeological significance. Recovered evidence suggests that the site minimally extends into the right-of-way and that at least one feature was within the right-of-way. Additional investigations are not warranted due to low recovery rates and construction plans which will effectively cover …

Testing of Site 41WM433 along FM 1431 in Williamson County, Texas, to determine eligibility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places and to determine site depth, cultural context, and archaeological significance was undertaken in April 1985. The site is located along a ridge line containing an outcrop of good quality Georgetown flint. Almost all the area within the right-of-way consisted of exposed bedrock ledges. One small incipient burned rock midden was present within the right-of-way. The midden measured 5meters in diameter, but about half of it had been destroyed by relic hunters. Very little information is available regarding Site 41KE93. The site is located adjacent to FM 474, approximately 8.7 miles northeast of Boerne, in Kendall County, Texas. It is situated on a small finger of land some 100 meters south of the Guadalupe River at Ammans Crossing and is bordered to the west by Sebinas Creek. Two hearths and a scatter of lithic debris were observed on the surface at the time the site was recorded, but no temporal or cultural indicators have, as yet, been found.
