Butler acted as the principal investigator, Sara Parkin as field director, and Jessica Kenmore as field technician. 48 person-hours were expended during fieldwork, 17 shovel tests, and 10 backhoe trenches were excavated in support of the survey.

Between December 18 and 21, 2018, an intensive archeological survey was completed in order to inventory and evaluate archeological resources within the footprint of the proposed FM 2493 roadway improvements from U.S. Highway 69 to Farm-to-Market 346 in Smith and Cherokee Counties, Texas. The project is identified under Texas Department of Transportation control-section-job numbers 0191- 03-083, 0191-04-008, and 0191-02-066. The work associated with this archeological survey was carried out under Texas Antiquities Permit 8567 by Brett Lang (Project Archeologist) and Floyd Kent of Cox|McLain Environmental Consulting, Inc., a subcontractor to RPS Group.

Due to the proposed inundation, nine bridge/culvert locations will be inundated, and new bridges/culverts will be constructed. White Hawk, which is handling the engineering for the project, contracted with AR Consultants, Inc. to evaluate the proposed bridge locations to determine if significant cultural resources are within the study areas. A total of 162.64 acres (65.81 hectares) were examined with 65.39 acres (26.46 hectares) intensively shovel tested. The project would be situated between Farm-to-Market Road 2931 and Pecan Creek at the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 2931 and Brewer Road with private properties as the north and south boundaries.

The test for this suite of models was conducted as a double-blind survey since neither the United States Forest Service personnel (excepting Garcia) nor the participants were provided with any information regarding the model in advance of testing. Input from the model was shared with the crew the day after each location was tested. Enlistment of the double-blind survey method aids in reducing survey bias. The focus is on Unit 6, house 10, excavated during 1940-1987 and led by Charles Nash. Through this analysis, the thesis broadens our knowledge and understanding of the dynamics within the cultures of the middle and late Mississippian societies of the Central Mississippi River Valley.

Material evidence of a local drawn-glass beadmaking industry was uncovered in the old section of Rouen, France, in 1869 during street construction. Composed of production tubes and wasters (most of which exhibit evidence of a speo heat rounding), the material is attributed to the early part of the 17th century. It is significant as many of the recorded varieties have correlatives at archaeological sites in eastern North America occupied during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. These include a 7-layer chevron, Nueva Cadiz varieties, and frit-core beads. It is, therefore, quite possible that some of the American specimens may …

The archaeological study of glass bead proveniences raises theoretical questions regarding the idea of “beadmaking centers” as defined by typological, technological, and geochemical means. Also important for defining beadmaking centers are historical sources in various languages. In the 19th century, French scholars interested in glassmaking in Normandy noted beadmaking ca. 1590-1635. Their publications show a rural cottage industry in the county of Eu and the forest of Brotonne, and an urban guild of patenôtriers in Rouen. While the historical data mostly show the production and export of rosary beads, the Normandy “beadmaking center” coincides with a major outfitting region of …

This article corrects the dating of a frit-core bead from Quebec reported in 2018, and reports three new find sites, two in North America and one in Europe. One of the American sites was occupied well past the 1560-1610 date range proposed for these beads, while the other is situated well to the south of all the others. The third site is in Rouen, France, where two different types were found with wasters from the production of drawn glass beads.

The focus of this research is the application of two computational methods in modeling pre-Columbian dugout canoe use on Florida's ancient transportation network. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) was used to locate what appear to be multiple unexcavated canoes inundated in the lake-bottom of Lake Santa Fe, a lake in close proximity to Newnans Lake, which contains the largest number of ancient canoes in the world. The identification of multiple canoes in Lake Santa Fe supported the recent idea that this lake may have served as a transit point within Florida's pre-Columbian transportation network. The Industrial Mine at Superior, operating from 1895 to 1945, was one of many coal mines situated within a region known as the Colorado Northern Coal fields. It is exceptional only in that it was one of the largest coal producers in the area and because it was the sole mine in the region with both a company town and company store. The dialog surrounding glass beads found in Scottish contexts is limited, particularly those found in Iron Age and Early Medieval contexts. These discussions focus largely on a narrative of diffusion from neighboring groups. This paper, however, examines the beads from a local perspective and finds that they differ significantly from those found in contemporary neighboring contexts. In fact, designs such as the triskele, marbled, and whirl beads do not appear elsewhere in the world and demonstrate significant skill and artistry on the part of local populations within Scotland. Colors also differ from neighboring groups, with deep blues and bright yellows …

Glass trade bead assemblages recovered during archaeological investigations at nine sites by Smithsonian archaeologists Betty Meggers and Clifford Evans in Brazil in 1948 and 1949 and Guyana in 1952 and 1953 date to multiple time periods, including the early 17th, mid-18th, mid-19th, and mid-20th centuries. The assemblages are used to show that the glass bead chronologies developed in North America are directly applicable to South America and that there is a global glass bead sequence related to European colonialism.
