The purpose of this thesis was to find out what were the types of strategies employed by American learners of Arabic as a second language and Egyptian native speakers of Arabic, to perform the speech act of refusal. Also, the present study investigated the similarities and/or the f differences between the most frequent strategies employed by both groups to perform refusals; in addition to investigating the relationship between the social status of the interlocutor and the initiating acts on one hand and the strategies chosen by both groups to perform refusals on the second hand. Based on cognitive approaches to second language learning, the thesis emphasizes the correspondence between MSA and ECA, and argues for simultaneous teaching of the two varieties from basic levels onward. Development in CALL technology can effectively implement cognitive principles and realize the goals of the integrated approach in the field of TAFL. The thesis describes a software program designed for teaching beginners MSA and ECA simultaneously using idioms as a unifying conceptual element.

Collocation is the arbitrary combination of words based on syntactic and semantic relations. Although collocational knowledge improves learners' expressiveness and fluency, collocation has long been neglected in learning Arabic, and Arabic dictionaries provide insufficient information about collocations.

This paper investigates three issues. The first comprises the characteristics of

collocation combining linguistic, pedagogical, lexicographical and cognitive viewpoints. I emphasize the importance of the knowledge of paradigmatic relations (synonyms) to improve that of collocation, and the necessity of contrastive study which will indicate what collocations should be learned and entered in dictionaries. The aim of this sociolinguistic study is to examine the grammatical gender difficulties that non-Arabic speakers face when they learn Arabic as a second language (ASL) This work concentrates on English and French speakers and compares the errors each make while learning Arabic. The choice of these two languages resulted from two factors: (1) since the author is fluent in English and French, she conducted her research on speakers of both languages; (2) since both Arabic and French are considerably more marked morphologically than English, the researcher is interested in examining the type of errors made by the speakers of …
