Experiences Of Limited English Proficiency (Lep) Patients In Healthcare, Javier Cintron
Experiences Of Limited English Proficiency (Lep) Patients In Healthcare, Javier Cintron
Honors Undergraduate Theses
As the US becomes increasingly more diverse, the presence of non-English speaking individuals also increases. With healthcare being a vital aspect of most individuals’ lives, it is drastically affected by any gap in communication, especially when a language barrier is present. For this investigation, I conducted a research study to examine the experiences of limited English proficiency (LEP) patients in healthcare using anthropological methods. The aim was to understand how having LEP affects patients. The primary form of data collection for this project consisted of Semi-structured interviews with a sample of individuals with LEP. In addition to interviews, I analyzed …
"The Milk Is Love": Understanding Mothers' Emotional Attachment To Breastmilk, Chandel M. Perez
"The Milk Is Love": Understanding Mothers' Emotional Attachment To Breastmilk, Chandel M. Perez
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Mothers are known to have an emotional attachment to their infant; however, some mothers also experience an emotional attachment to their own milk. Exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding with complementary solids are recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization. Some mothers produce enough surplus milk to donate to a human milk bank. This thesis considers the emotional attachment to milk experienced by women who donate milk to a milk bank. This research is based on participant observation in a human milk bank in Florida and interviews collected …

Transformation Of The St. Clair Maritime Cultural Landscape From The Seventeenth To The Twentieth Centuries, Daniel Frederick Harrison
Transformation Of The St. Clair Maritime Cultural Landscape From The Seventeenth To The Twentieth Centuries, Daniel Frederick Harrison
Wayne State University Dissertations
The St. Clair system—a river, delta and lake between Lake Huron and the Detroit River—offers significant opportunities to study long-term maritime landscape formation, and to preserve a unique resource. Few maritime landscapes in the Great Lakes remain so deeply and clearly inscribed by successive cultures. This permits both focused and comprehensive analyses and comparisons of the ideologies, technologies and practices of indigenous, colonial, and modern societies as each created its unique place in the environment through four processes: cognition, dwelling, movement, and representation. The socially-conditioned perception of environmental resources and constraints, and resulting strategies to exploit the former while minimizing …

Sando Pea: Between Tradition And Health Challenge Among Kaluppini Indigenous People, Nurbaya -, Wahyu Chandra
Antropologi Indonesia
Sando pea was a name for traditional birth attendants among Kaluppini people of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The presence of traditional birth attendants was considered one of the factors that cause delays in accessing health facilities for mothers. It resulted in high maternal mortality rate, especially in developing countries, including Indonesia. The study aimed to explore and describe the role of traditional birth attendants among Kaluppini people and the health challenges faced by this community in accessing health facilities. Using qualitative approach, data were collected through indepth interviews and focus group discussions. A total of 6 sando peas and 67 mothers …
Place And Digital Space, Suraj Chaudhary
Place And Digital Space, Suraj Chaudhary
Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy
The intersection of philosophies of space and technology is a fecund area of inquiry that has received surprisingly little attention in the philosophical literature. While the major accounts of space and place have not considered complexities introduced by recent technological developments, scholarship on the human-technology relationship has virtually ignored the spatial dimensions of this interaction. Place and Digital Space takes a step in addressing this gap in literature by offering an original, phenomenological account of place and using this framework to analyze digitally mediated spaces. I argue that places are continually evolving, internally heterogenous, and spatially distinct meaningful wholes with …

Medical Utilization In The Context Of Culture: Analyzing The Concepts, Benefits And Drawbacks Of Sri Lankan Biomedical And Ayurvedic Healthcare, Miriah Rajaguru
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Sri Lanka is an island inhabited by a culture more than 5,000 years old. The primary medicine utilized by this culture in precolonial times is known as Ayurveda. During colonization, Sri Lanka was introduced to biomedicine and forced to negate Ayurvedic medicine. Throughout the years, rather than abandoning their indigenous medical practice, Sri Lanka incorporated biomedicine and Ayurvedic medicine into their medically plural society. Today, Sri Lankans utilized both medicines for different ailments, concerns and conditions. Utilizing a variety of anthropological methods and theories, this study gathered qualitative information from 39 Sri Lankan informants. These informants were recruited to find …

Queer Political Organization In Israel, And Palestine: Shifting Away From Homonationalism, Tristan Blaisdell
Undergraduate Honors Theses
In this project, I present research I have done on the issue of pink washing queer Israeli and Palestinian citizens and homonationalism within Israel and Palestine. I also create an exhibit brief outlining a hypothetical museum exhibit on this topic to be put up at the museum of culture and environment. The first section outlines the history and theory of my exhibit, and a brief personal statement where I talk about my interest in the subject and where I’m coming from before I design this exhibit. My theory is built off concepts of diaspora, home, belonging, queer identity, and intersectionality …
Politics Of Difference: Ethnicity And Social Class Within The Indonesian Middle Class In Digital Era, Thung Ju Lan
Politics Of Difference: Ethnicity And Social Class Within The Indonesian Middle Class In Digital Era, Thung Ju Lan
Antropologi Indonesia
Today the issue of ethnicity is considered ‘weaker’ compared to religious issues, particularly after the 2017 Jakarta Governor Election which was followed by the emergence of the so-called 212 Movement. Nevertheless, the fact shows that it’s as strong as ever. The issue of socioeconomic gap between ethnic groups is complicated by digital divide between those with access to social media and those without. Information and opinion are mostly constructed by surveys conducted among those with access to internet or social media. As such, group differences are not marked by poverty per se like the previous era. Politics of difference has …

Hegemony Versus Pluralism: Ayurveda And The Movement For Global Mental Health, Murphy Halliburton
Hegemony Versus Pluralism: Ayurveda And The Movement For Global Mental Health, Murphy Halliburton
Publications and Research
Under the aegis of the World Health Organization, the Movement for Global Mental Health and an Indian Supreme Court ruling, biomedical psychiatric interventions have expanded in India augmenting biomedical hegemony in a place that is known for its variety of healing modalities. This is occurring despite the fact that studies by the WHO show a better outcome in India for people suffering schizophrenia and related diagnoses when compared to people in developed countries who have greater access to biomedical psychiatry. Practitioners of ayurvedic medicine in Kerala have been mounting a claim for a significant role in public mental health in …
"It’S Just A Bad Period" And Other Ways Of Dismissing Women's Pain: An Ethnographic Look Into The Experience Of Endometriosis, Selina Hays
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This thesis uses online ethnographic methods to analyze the impact of patriarchal values on the illness experiences of women with endometriosis. Current literature suggests that negative impact on patients with endometriosis with regard to cultural discourse surrounding menstruation and chronic illness. Utilizing a combination of critical discourse analysis and constructivist grounded theory, the results of this research demonstrate that patients engage in a form of performance that is reactive to normalization and dismissal of pain by doctors and wider social support due in part to cultural stigmas of menstruation and chronic pain, as well as the inherent power imbalance in …
The Passive Side Of Conflict Archaeology: The 2016 To 2019 Excavations Of A Pow Mess Hall In The Honouliuli Internment And Pow Camp, Island Of O‘Ahu, Hawai‘I, William Belcher
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
The archaeological investigation of Prisoner of War (POW) camps offers a glimpse into the passive side of conflict archaeology; that is, those parts of conflict related to imprisonment of enemy combatants and not active areas like forts and battlefields. This paper presents the research and field operations conducted at the Honouliuli National Historic Site during the 2016 to 2019 field seasons as part of the University of Hawaiʻi West Oʻahu (UH West Oʻahu) archaeological field schools, particularly focused on the discovery and partial excavation of a mess hall concrete foundation or platform associated with a POW population during World War …

Results indicate both variability in chloride concentrations based on location as well as conditions under which water was sampled.
Number Of Shoes Tested During A Running Shoe Mass Perception Task May Not Influence Accuracy, James G. Saxton, Joel G. Greenya, Christopher L. Kliethermes, David S. Senchina
Number Of Shoes Tested During A Running Shoe Mass Perception Task May Not Influence Accuracy, James G. Saxton, Joel G. Greenya, Christopher L. Kliethermes, David S. Senchina
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Commercially available running shoes differ in terms of their relative masses. It is unclear how well consumers may be able to judge mass differences from wearing alone, though previous studies suggest that perceptual outcomes may be influenced by experimental design factors such as the length of time worn. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the number of shoes used in a testing session impacts wearers’ mass perceptual accuracy. Forty-eight young adult males ran for 5 min in 4 pairs of shoes (their own running shoes plus 3 unfamiliar pairs) before being asked whether an unfamiliar running shoe …
Loss For Words: An Investigation Of The English Nature Vocabulary, Margaret C. Luthin
Loss For Words: An Investigation Of The English Nature Vocabulary, Margaret C. Luthin
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
This research assesses the state of English nature vocabulary in Montana, defined here as words and terms relating to local species, weather, and topography. Studies have shown declining nature knowledge among English speakers as well as a marked decrease in the usage of nature words in English popular culture throughout the 20th century, and while research across disciplines points to a growing disconnect between humans and their environment, researchers have yet to investigate the role of vocabulary and language attrition in humans’ changing experience of nature. This study develops a new survey instrument to gather vocabulary data from Montanans, aiming …
Undergraduate Anthropology As White Academic Space?: Perceptions And Experiences Of Minority Anthropology Students At West Virginia University, Tanisha Adams
Undergraduate Scholarship
Used to establish scientific racism, reinforce eugenics, and create immigration laws, the foundation of American anthropology was built on colonialistic and eurocentric ideology. By focusing on discourse rather than action, decades of effort to diversify the discipline has led to graduate students and practicing anthropologists of color to continuously express marginalization within the field. In 2009, the American Anthropological Association Commission on Race and Racism in Anthropology (CRRA) conducted a survey to examine the experiences and status of minorities within the field of anthropology. The survey focused on the graduate students and those in academic positions. The results of this …
Social Change And Games Of Chance At The Site Of Gallon Jug, Nicholas C. Kopp
Social Change And Games Of Chance At The Site Of Gallon Jug, Nicholas C. Kopp
Honors Undergraduate Theses
During the 2019 field season of the Chan Chich Archaeological Project (CCAP)/Belize Estates Archaeological Survey Team's (BEAST) work in northwestern Belize, excavations commenced at an elite household at the site of Gallon Jug, named Courtyard B-1. Excavations revealed intriguing details about the lives of the inhabitants through the presence of burials, ceramics, architecture, and – as is central to this research – Patolli boards. Patolli, a prehistoric game of chance played throughout Mesoamerican, is a relatively under researched topic within the field of archaeology. In this thesis I argue that the patolli boards at Gallon Jug portray evidence of elite …

“The Policy Of Intimidation Had Been So Successfully Managed That Many Colored Men Kept Away From The Polls”: Violence In The Reconstruction Era South, Marykatherine Klaybor
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
After the American Civil War ended in 1865, the United States entered an era known as Reconstruction, which lasted until 1877. In this postwar period the federal government faced pressure to reincorporate the former Confederate States back into the Union. In addition, Southern political, economic, and social systems needed to be transformed in the wake of emancipation and the country grappled with the question of political rights for newly freed people. Throughout the era, the Republican Party favored policies that secured the rights of black Southerners while facing opposition from many Southern white Democrats. This opposition often manifested in unchecked …
Tracing Biometric Assemblages In India’S Surveillance State: Reproducing Colonial Logics, Reifying Caste Purity, And Quelling Dissent Through Aadhaar, Priya Prabhakar
Tracing Biometric Assemblages In India’S Surveillance State: Reproducing Colonial Logics, Reifying Caste Purity, And Quelling Dissent Through Aadhaar, Priya Prabhakar
Scripps Senior Theses
Tracing Biometric Assemblages in India’s Surveillance State seeks to understand the historical conditions that rendered the nation-state of India as having the world’s largest biometric surveillance system: Aadhaar. Surveillance practices used by the British Raj mirrors the current social order of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as they use surveillance to similar ends in today’s political economy, through the intersecting forces of neoliberalism and ethnonationalism. This thesis is an exploration into how India’s current surveillance regimes cultivate biometric surveillant assemblages through Aadhaar. Contrary to claims that Aadhaar was created to empower the poor, I argue that these surveillance regimes …
The Built Environment At Plaza H, Cahal Pech: A Study In Resiliency, Rachel A. Steffen
The Built Environment At Plaza H, Cahal Pech: A Study In Resiliency, Rachel A. Steffen
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This thesis seeks to understand the human response to extreme environmental, social, and political change during the Terminal Classic (750-1050 CE) at Cahal Pech. Across the Maya lowlands, this period is distinguished by the end of divine kingships, the cessation of new monumental architecture, rapid changes in prestige goods and trade networks, and population decline at many major centers. Cahal Pech, a medium-sized ceremonial center, experienced great shifts in political power and access to resources during the Terminal Classic. This thesis attempts to understand the last occupation of the site, prior to abandonment. Field data for this study is derived …
A Snapshot Of Care: Creating Models Of Care For Individuals Included In The Terry Collection, Felicia Robyn Sparozic
A Snapshot Of Care: Creating Models Of Care For Individuals Included In The Terry Collection, Felicia Robyn Sparozic
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Utilizing the bioarchaeology of care model, this research formulates a model of care based on ethnohistorical and skeletal markers of pathologic conditions. The index of care is the method used to create models of care, and this requires social, cultural, economic, environmental, and mortuary contexts to determine the resources required to aid a person through injury or disability. This paper investigates the impact of known medical, occupational, and morgue records that accompanied each selected individual in the skeletal collection. This additional information, beyond what is gained from skeletal analysis, generates a complex model of care. A more complex model of …
Dendroanthropological Applications In Adaptive Management: A Multi-Methodical Approach For Interpreting Cultural Landscape Change At Mvs-Yee-Se’-Ne, Brandy Alexandra Clark
Dendroanthropological Applications In Adaptive Management: A Multi-Methodical Approach For Interpreting Cultural Landscape Change At Mvs-Yee-Se’-Ne, Brandy Alexandra Clark
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis combined GIS analysis, archival research, and dendrochronological methods to provide a means for interpreting how the Mvs-yee-se’-ne cultural landscape has changed since the period of European contact circa 1850. By employing dendrochronological methods, a unique stand of Oregon white oak (Quercus garryana) was found to be present at Mvs-yee-se’-ne by at least 1809. Since 1850, factors such as American colonization, homesteading, mining, fire suppression, and logging have had an effect on cultural landscapes such as Mvs-yee-se’-ne regionally, but this research localized such effects in a site-specific context. Aerial imagery analysis conducted for this thesis documented extractive …
