A Refutation From Capitalism Toward Environmentalism’S Critics Related Environmental Problem, Riska Fara Farucha, Naupal Asnawi
International Review of Humanities Studies
From environmentalism’s perspective, there are four fundamental assumptions that make capitalism inconsistent with efforts to preserve the environment. First, unlimited growth in the capitalist system is contradicted with limited environmental conditions. Second, the basic principles of capitalism (individual freedom, self-interests, and free-market) are not compatible with efforts to preserve the environment. Third, capitalism has caused a "metabolic rift" between society and the ecosystem. Fourth, the tendency of capitalism that creates consumer society will produce massive pollution. This article is intended to refute these four environmentalism critics and also demonstrate the coherence of the theory of capitalism on environmental preservation. To …

Australian Foreign Policy Towards Indonesia Related East Timor 1975-1991, Ririn Qunuri, Didik Pradjoko Dr.
International Review of Humanities Studies
This article will explain Australia's attitudes and views on the East Timor issue which caused conflict with Indonesia. But on the other hand, Australia cannot ignore Indonesia's interests in East Timor. In 1978, Australia recognized East Timor "de facto" as part of Indonesia. Then, the question arises why Australia supports the integration of East Timor with Indonesia. What are the underlying interests. The Timor Gap Treaty was ratified on 11 December 1989, strengthening Indonesia's position with Australia. Indonesia is considered more accommodating when compared to Portugal in the matter of maritime boundaries in the Timor Sea region. Indonesia is the …

Contextualizing The Health Of U.S. Farmworkers, Gabrielle Hyde
Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals
Farmworkers often exist in vulnerable social and occupational positions that make accessing health care a challenge. This literature review seeks to outline the health of U.S. farmworkers in the context of these vulnerabilities through a review of the existing literature. It provides a short background to understand how we have become reliant on immigration to feed our nation and to give a snapshot of where these farmworkers come from and what their health concerns are. A key topic in this literature review is the social context of these health burdens including the attitudes of providers, farmworker’s perceptions of their own …
Caring Against The Carceral: How Families Mediate The Social Death Of Incarceration, Jessica Claire
Caring Against The Carceral: How Families Mediate The Social Death Of Incarceration, Jessica Claire
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Incarceration, especially in the United States, is deeply related to issues of racism, poverty, and citizenship. These particular experiences are the result of a history of biopolitical control affecting Black and brown communities and have a quintessential origin in enslavement. Those who are incarcerated are isolated, dishonored, and powerless as a result of the criminalization of race and poverty. These observations led to questions surrounding the particular impact families may have on the experiences of those who are incarcerated. Families of Incarcerated Loved ones, or FOILs, mediate incarceration through intentional socialization which has the potential to counteract the realities of …

Marine Melodies: Traditional Scottish And Irish Mermaid And Selkie Songs As Performed By Top Female Vocalists In Contemporary Celtic Music, Olivia H. Phillips
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Mermaids and human-seal hybrids, called selkies, are a vibrant part of Celtic folklore, including ballad and song traditions. Though some of these songs have been studied in-depth, there is a lack of research comparing them to each other or to their contemporary renditions. This research compares traditional melodies and texts of the songs “The Mermaid,” “The Grey Selchie of Sule Skerry,” and “Hó i Hó i” to contemporary recordings by top female vocalists in Scottish and Irish music.
The texts and melodies I have identified as “source” material are those most thoroughly examined by early ballad and folklore scholars. The …
Typology Of Projectile Points/Knives From Upper East Tennessee, Zoen Mclachlan
Typology Of Projectile Points/Knives From Upper East Tennessee, Zoen Mclachlan
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Projectile points/ knives (PPKs) are categorized by morphology, also called typology, and associated with cultural periods. A total of 64 PPKs in collections in the Archaeology Lab at East Tennessee State University were curated as untyped and without provenience. They were allegedly collected from ground surveys in Upper East Tennessee, but without archaeological context research had not been prioritized. The importance of such research lies in the fact that few publications exist on the region of Upper East Tennessee and many reference books on lithic typology portray PPKs through illustrations of the ideal morphology of each type. The challenge herein …

The Breeze That Took Her Beads: Examining And Imagining Ojibwe Life At Big Rice Lake After The Treaty Of 1854, Travis Armstrong
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
It’s the early 1900s, and a breeze off Big Rice Lake in northern Minnesota steals away a girl’s tiny glass beads, later to be excavated by archaeologists. The story of “The Breeze That Took Her Beads” is archaeological fiction meant to humanize scientific descriptions that can be impersonal or unapproachable to audiences outside of the profession. The imagined story – rooted in tribal elder wisdom, archaeology and history – becomes a vehicle for acknowledging the perseverance of tribal life at Big Rice Lake. Big Rice Lake in the Superior National Forest is known for its 2,000 years of wild …
How Racialization Shapes Work Conditions For H2a Migrant Farmworkers: Literature Review, Zoi Johns
How Racialization Shapes Work Conditions For H2a Migrant Farmworkers: Literature Review, Zoi Johns
Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals
Scholars have argued that an existing gap between the idealization of American prosperity and actualization of American exploitation occurs on account of racialization. Racialization refers to the process in which subsets of people are reduced to a set of occupational practices, beliefs, or narratives that work to define their low position within societal hierarchy (Garcia 2014). This concept distinguishes itself from racism as it focuses on the conditions that exist in order for the reproduction of racism and oppression to occur (Gonzalez-Sobrino and Goss 2019). Thus, it will be argued that the reproduction of these tenants occurs capitalistically and perpetually. …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this case study was to analyze the spatial distribution patterns of the residences of registered sex offenders in Pulaski County, Arkansas to determine the impact of state enforced residence restrictions. Density and clustering factors were used to identify census tracts of the study area with high and low concentrations of offenders. These zones were then compared to identify which characteristics were similar and dissimilar between high and low concentration zones. The results indicate that there is a non-random distribution of registered sex offenders in the study area. The findings also indicate that the residence restrictions placed on …
Impacts Of Children’S Negative Affectivity And Effortful Control On Parenting Styles And Parental Stress, Calista Tomasetti
Impacts Of Children’S Negative Affectivity And Effortful Control On Parenting Styles And Parental Stress, Calista Tomasetti
Anthropology
While a wealth of research has explicated the impact of parents on children, the effects of children on parents has received less attention. Research has shown associations between temperament and parent stress as well as between parenting styles and parent stress. Studies have demonstrated that both high negative affectivity and low effortful control can cause parents to experience higher levels of stress (Konstantareas & Papageorgiou, 2006; Pesonen, Räikkönen, Heinonen, Komsi, Järvenpää, & Strandberg, 2008; Szymańska & Aranowska, 2019). Research has also shown that parents who employ authoritarian parenting tend to experience higher levels of stress than those who employ authoritative …

Variability In Long Bone Processing: The Result Of Bone Resiliency Or Marrow Utility?, Jonathan P. Keith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In archaeology, the study of animal remains helps researchers understand what animals past hunters sought to prey upon and what decisions they made related to field butchery. Archaeological excavations in sites of the Northern Great Plains and the Snake River Plain have shown that a disproportional amount of bison limb bones occur relative to other bones in the body. Limb bones contain marrow, and to break these open ancient butchers would use hammer stones and rock anvils. Such processing behaviors often leave impact scars, and these often vary in frequency from one part of the skeleton to the next.

Mass Analysis And Raw Material Sourcing As Metrics Of Poverty Point's Socio-Political Organization, Jeffrey Lewis, Jr.
Mass Analysis And Raw Material Sourcing As Metrics Of Poverty Point's Socio-Political Organization, Jeffrey Lewis, Jr.
Master's Theses
Hypotheses about the socio-political organization of Poverty Point have each attempted to answer the procedures that led to the site’s construction and continued use. Mass analysis and raw material sourcing of the North Three excavation units offer an enhanced examination of the lithic activities of the Poverty Point site. These analyses provide new insight into how the site may have been utilized by those traveling to the site by assigning social values to the raw materials transported there. The results of this lithic analysis and comparison to previous investigations suggest a crucial activity that would have impacted the socio-political organization …

An Evaluation Of Activity In A Colonial Maya Cemetery Using Femoral Cross-Sectional Analysis, Casey Lejeune
Master's Theses
Cortical bone formation in the population of Tipu, a colonial visita site in Belize, was examined here to reveal factors of their activity and address the possibility of a status-based burial plan. To answer this question, this research examined the endosteal surface of the midshaft femur using digital imaging methods. The femora from 70 individuals were photographed and examined using the BoneJ plugin in ImageJ software. The cortical bone area was compared to additional variables, including sex, age, stature, pilastric index, and burial location. It was hypothesized that sex, age, and stature would correlate with cortical bone area similarly across …
Warrior Dialogue In Samuel: Honor, Shame, And Divine Proxy, Robert A. Kranz
Warrior Dialogue In Samuel: Honor, Shame, And Divine Proxy, Robert A. Kranz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Discourse between warriors plays a role in several battle scenes within the books of Samuel. The repartee is a way for the narrator to add color and depth to the narrative and develop essential themes. Social-scientific criticism has often examined these interactions through the cultural lenses of honor and shame. Peristiany, Bourdieu, and Pitt-Rivers are just some scholars who developed cultural frameworks based upon the importance of honor and shame in the Mediterranean region. Malina, extrapolating from North African cultural studies by Bourdieu, developed a challenge and response model for the acquisition of honor as depicted in the Bible. However, …
A 3-Dimensional Approach To Projectile Point Classification, Kayden Dennis
A 3-Dimensional Approach To Projectile Point Classification, Kayden Dennis
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Typologies have long been used by archaeologists to answer questions about the past, ranging from issues of site chronology to tool function. However, current methods are hampered by subjective misclassifications as well as a loss of the range of variability among different tool forms due to a process that forces them into singular types. This thesis looks to create a simple and reliable technique of projectile point classification. It is also the author’s goal to use a classification system that monitors cultural transmission over time. This objective is addressed with an Archaic projectile point sequence from the Albertson site in …

The Role Of Culture In Sustainable Communities: The Case Of Rapa Nui (Easter Island, Chile), Pamela A. Mischen, Carl P. Lipo
Anthropology Faculty Scholarship
We explore how the combination of cultural heritage and present-day cultural affili- ations influences the construction of the concept of sustainability at the scale of the community using the case study of Rapa Nui (Easter Island, Chile). We argue that overlapping affiliations—expressed through administrative culture, organizational culture, and professional culture—influence the views held by governance leaders. Furthermore, the role of cultural heritage must be considered in efforts to change and perpetuate sustainability-related behaviors within a community. Using archeo- logical and historical evidence from the pre-contact and historical record of Rapa Nui, we discuss how cultural heritage evolved endogenously in response …

The Genetic Links Between Archaic And Modern Humans, Maria J. Orellana Rosales
The Genetic Links Between Archaic And Modern Humans, Maria J. Orellana Rosales
Thinking Matters Symposium
Our modern physiology is the mixture of many archaic humans that once roamed our planet. The evidence of these archaic humans is still present in our DNA. This poster reviews how our understanding of ancient human genetics has drastically changed due to advances in molecular genetics. Neanderthal and Denisovan remains have been sequenced for nuclear and mitochondrial DNA. Neanderthal and Denisovan genetic ancestry have been identified by genomic studies in modern human populations across Eurasia and Pacific Island regions. Studies have shown a gene flow of 4±1% from Neanderthals to present-day Eurasians. Whereas, Papuan and Melanesian individuals share 4±0.7% more …

This thesis explores the nature of home. It situates the idea of home, both as a physical place and a spiritual state, where the subjects of these stories find belonging. Fourteen interviews were conducted, from December 2020 through February 2021, resulting in a series of longform stories. Eight interviews were recorded with immediate family and childhood friends in my hometown, the suburbs of Orlando, Fla. The balance of the stories derived from Zoom interviews, culminating in a 1,200-mile road journey to South Carolina, for the remaining ones.
What emerged from these oral history interviews and ensuing longform pieces are three …

Traditional society is a society that is strongly influenced by tradition. However, the fact is a society can also change such strong tradition. This research aims to understand the driving force that allows the influence of tradition and changes in traditions by traditional societies. Through a systematic review of relevant literature, this research complements Giddens' structuration theory with MacIntyre's thoughts about cultural components that make up the cognitive structure and shows that worldview - a virtual structure in cognition that corresponds to the structure of society - is the force that determines the influence and change of traditions. Therefore, different …
