A Tentative Description And Classification Of Tewa Verb Structure, Edward Dozier

This paper presents only a portion of an exhaustive study of the verb structure in process. The purpose here is to illustrate the method of analysis, to describe significant features briefly, and to group Tewa verbs into a few distinctive classes. Tewa verb structures have been analyzed carefully and their basic elements isolated. The most important feature of verb constructions, the verb theme, has been exposed in this manner. In terms of the verb theme Tewa verbs may be divided into several categories which have been illustrated with examples in Chapter V.

There are two problems involved in the study of processes of culture change: one, what are the determinants of change, and do they apply universally; two, the utilization of these laws in determining culture history. No attempt will be made in this paper to reconstruct a history of the cultural items, not because there is no historical interest, but because the problem is pointed towards the analysis of some culture processes. The orderly arrangement of the archeological cultures of Missouri, showing areal and temporal relationships, appears to be one of the major problems in that state at the present time. It is proposed to undertake a classification of the known archeological cultures by means of the McKern Taxonomic System, to point out the known distribution of each culture within the state, and to undertake a tentative sequence of the classified cultures by means of evidence found in Missouri and in surrounding areas.

Schweizer describes the results of a trip to Scandinavia designed to investigate opportunities for collaboration with Scandinavian scholars and set goals for language and dialect research, with particular focus on the development of Scandinavian and Germanic language atlasses. The report describes several opportunities for collaboration and names of potential resources, but describes a fraught political situation where collaboration must be conducted privately for fear of backlash for the Scandinavian scholars involved.
