The Littlefork Burial: New Light On Old Copper, Jack Steinbring

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A richly furnished child burial of late Old Copper affiliation in Northern Minnesota is described. The mortuary offerings include a pair of large, decorated bone harpoons, and a pair of diagnostic Old Copper projectile points attached to dart shafts. The primary burial is flexed in a shallow pit with evidence of red ochre. Typological comparisons suggest a tentative date of 1,000 to 750 B.C.

Reconstruction Of An Arkansas Hopewellian Panpipe, Gloria A. Young

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Panpipes have been found in North America only on Hopewell sites. A particularly well preserved specimen from the Helena Crossing Site was described by James A. Ford. From this description a reconstruction which produced a true octave was made from native cane. Since the panpipe is a more primitive instrument than the flutes in use during Hopewell florescence, it is postulated that this instrument was used by shamans in the cult of ancestor worship.

This paper is designed to be a study of a Paleolithic flint industry: the Mousterian of Neanderthal man. It is a detailed analysis of the types and styles of flintwork which this early man produced. It will detail tool types, chipping techniques, regional varieties, and outside influences. It will explore the extent to which Neanderthal man worked in gone and how the Mousterian flint forms are mirrored in this other medium. It will shoe how the Mousterian developed and how it was influenced by earlier and contemporary industries.

Feudalism, Estate, And Prebendalism In "Pre-Modern" Korea, Han Gu Kim

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This paper analyzes three phases of feudalism in Korea. First, the genesis of Korea's feudalism, which developed from the end of the ninth century to the late fourteenth century. Secondly, the continuum of feudalism in Korea, which the author believes stemmed from power conflicts among the elite and the ensuing decline of the Silla dynasty. It is noted, also, that Korean feudalism has been transformed gradually from a decentralized form to a centralized one. Thirdly, structural distinctions are noted between the above two sub-types of feudalism. The analysis indicates that centralized feudalism has been characterized by absolute monarchism and various …

Case histories describes the joint attempt of Tanzania and Zambia to escape from the supranational network that controlled southern Africa, by expanding links across the Indian Ocean by building a railroad that would give Central Africa a way to export minerals outside the control of the southern African system. Author warned "the extraction and processing of ores is, in all circumstances, an interdependent part of a larger scale world industrial system" (p. 102).

Archeological Exploration Of Land's Ford Canal Chester County, South Carolina, E. Thomas Hemmings

Research Manuscript Series

Land's Ford Canal was built on the west bank of the Catawba River in Chester District, South Carolina, between 1820 and 1823. The canal bypassed two miles of shoals, and accomodated a fall of 32 feet by means of two pairs of lifting locks. Archeological exploration of the canal was undertaken in December, 1969, in order to determine the shape and grade of the bed and other construction details. After reconnaissance of the canal course and surface features, eight backhoe trenches were placed across the bed and banks at selected locations. Archeological Investigation Of Bayou Bartholomew, 1969, Martha Ann Rolingson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Archeological investigation along Bayou Bartholomew in Ashley County was initiated with the primary objective of establishing a chronological sequence of prehistoric cultures. This paper reports the first season of fieldwork. Emphasis was placed on locating sites and obtaining adequate surface collections while only two sites were tested. The different types of sites and their relationship to the Bayou Bartholomew channels are discussed. Prehistoric occupations from four general periods are outlined, including late Archaic, early to middle Woodland, late Woodland and Mississippi.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The sources of trade beads found in archeological sites in North American may be discovered through a system of bead classification. Typology should be based on shape, size, materials, color and translucency, decoration, and method of manufacture. A chronology can then be established. Ethnological data may reveal European contact and intertribal trade.

In September of 1894, John Hyrum Koyle, Jr., said that he was shown in a dream or vision a large, rich deposit of gold and an underground storehouse of artifacts hidden by people of Ancient America. This dream was the beginning of a mining venture which has never produced anything of value, has been opposed vigorously by both officials of the LDS Church and the State, yet has claimed supporters numbered in the thousands.

The mine has profoundly affected (and continues to affect) the lives of many families who have come into the sphere of its influence. The lore of …
