Collection Of Dalton Points From Yell County, Arkansas, Robert L. Brooks

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The hypothesis that projectile points serve functions other than use as a head for a missile was examined by Morse and Goodyear in regard to Dalton points. The writer reexamined this hypothesis in light of a significant collection of Dalton points from Yell County, Arkansas, and further substantiates the hypothesis formulated by Morse and tested by Goodyear.

A Statistical Analysis Of Osteological Remains From Caesarea Maritima, Richard D. Davidian

This study is a statistical analysis of the osteological remains found at Caesarea Maritima in Israel during the 1972 Archaeological Expedition to that city. It is limited to the following animal_ groups: Large Ruminants, Small Ruminants, Suiformes and Equidae.

Included in the introduction is a section on field and laboratory techniques. The use of edge-punch cards for data retrieval is explained and the excavation, cleaning, numbering and identifying of the bones is described.

Causality Theories On The Child Abuser: An Exploratory Study Of Professionals Who Work With The Abused Child, Jennifer Ann Gordon

The purpose of the study was to determine which, out of four, child abuse causality theories select professionals in the state subscribe to. These theories are Role Reversal, Lack of Mothering, Successive Generation, and Psychological Dysfunctioning. Each theory is defined in such a manner as to highlight particular, selective characteristics expressed by the author. A second purpose was to establish a foundation for further study. The information gathered and the results obtained are for this end, also. The four causality theories of child abuse were postulated for explanatory purposes. James B. Boyd describes six Native American archeological sites he had mapped in western Hidalgo County, beginning with discoveries near La Joya Creek and a school construction site. He detailed artifacts such as Matamoros points, Tortugas dart points, scrapers, and crude stone tools found across multiple visits, noting variations in richness depending on site disturbance. The final site, Chihuahua Hill, stood out as unusually rich for Hidalgo County, though Boyd emphasized these sites were modest compared to larger finds in neighboring counties and northern Mexico. Northeast Brazil is a region characterized by economic poverty and human misery. Poor ecological conditions contribute to the nature of the dilemma, but another factor in the apparent cultural stagnation of the Northeast, may be the persistence of values and social practices traditionally aligned with the colonial sugar plantation system. Thus, this thesis represents an examination of the continuity of a given pattern, the man/patron relationship. This pattern is a contemporary parallel to the master/slave relationship which was the key to understanding of the social system of the colonial period. KWRRI Research Reports

This project was designed to study the impact of private preconstruction land acquisition in a Central Kentucky area in which a flood-control dam and reservoir impoundment is planned. The research design was built around use of anthropological concepts and research techniques. By these means it was possible to analyze the perceived values of land to traditionalist residents, among which social and economic security concepts are paramount. Recent land purchases, locally believed to have been made chiefly by "outsiders," (urbanites from nearby Louisville), at prices out of line in terms of local agricultural worth, has been extremely unsettling contributing to the …

A Functional Interpretation Of Pottery From Batan Island, Philippines, Joanne M. Laetsch

This thesis is a report on a pottery analysis which was carried out in the laboratory of the Department of Anthropology at Portland State University. The earthenware materials involved were collected from three surface sites on Batan Island, Philippines, during the summer of 1969.

The interpretation of these potteries was based upon the direct-historical approach to archaeological research. The use of this method was proposed after a cursory examination of the earthenwares revealed certain general similarities between the archaeological potteries and the ethnographically-known wares produced in the area at the present time.
