Multinational Enterprise And Urbanism, Alvin W. Wolfe

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the possibility that, in the future, cities may experience greater independence of nation-states than has been the case heretofore. The weakening of states relative to other institutions involved in the development of a supranational level of sociocultural integration makes possible a new kind of interdependence between multinational enterprises and urban communities. In this developing future, cities can provide the loci for certain operations of what is essentially a supranational system based on function rather than on territory.

Yesner's paper reiterates a major concern of the symposium "Man the Hunter" (Lee and DeVore 1968a)-the need to develop generalizations which accommodate the behavioral variability exhibited by hunter-gatherers, past and present. Much of the literature, Yesner reemphasizes, fails to deal adequately with groups characterized by "atypical" variations in energy flow, technological complexity, population density, sociopolitical organization, and so forth. He focuses on a subset of foragers and collectors (Binford 1980) that appears to be among the most aberrant- "maritime" hunter-gatherers.

Central to this bibliography are titles dealing with the conceptual and methodological aspects of human/cultural ecology as applicable to the broad field of anthropology. Aboriginal Clay Figurines From The Upper Rogue Valley In Southwestern Oregon, Lyman Patrick Deich

A study of 80 clay figurines from aboriginal sites in the upper Rogue River Valley in southwestern Oregon fails to reveal any connection with other figurines found in the Pacific Northwest and northern California. A preference for animal rather than human representations is demonstrated. The temporal distribution of the figurines is not known, but spatial distribution appears roughly coextensive with territories occupied by the upland Takelma at the time of Euro-American contact during the second quarter of the nineteenth century.

Late Pleistocene And Recent Archaeology And Geomorphology Of The South Shore Of Harney Lake, Oregon, Keith Donald Gehr

The present study was a response to the discovery of two artifacts found in a ditch wall near Harney Lake, Oregon. These were lying on a buried lake floor that appeared to be of late Pleistocene or early Recent age. Other sediments exposed in the ditch seemed to relate to at least some of the phases of the pluvial lake sequence in the Harney Basin. Three problems were considered: (1) the geomorphology and dating of the pluvial lake stillstands, (2) whether the original artifacts were part of a larger early site, and (3) whether there was any relationship between archaeological …

Trade And Reciprocity Among The River Bushmen Of Northern Botswana, Elizabeth A. Cashdan

This dissertation is a study of trade and reciprocity in two river regions of Northern Botswana. The regions studied, the Nata and Botletle River areas, are inhabited by similar ethnic groups (River Bushmen and various Bantu groups) but they exhibit environmental differences as well as differences in the pattern of exchange found among the inhabitants. The study is a controlled comparison between these two regions, and attempts to explain these differences in exchange with reference to the environmental differences between the regions. Tinsley Bottom lies adjacent to the Cumberland River in Jackson and Clay Counties in north central Tennessee. The rich rolling bottomland totaling approximately two thousand acres on the south bank of the Cumberland River lured several families to purchase land and take residence there in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

The history of Tinsley Bottom is not found in written records or annals of Tennessee history. No person of reknown sprang from the cultural context of this community. Yet tales are told of how Daniel Boone hunted in the Bottom and slept in a cave overlooking the River, and …

Two Sites In Uvalde County: The Elm Creek Site (41 Uv 67), Wayne C. Young

Site 41 UV 67 represented a shallow and mixed multicomponent prehistoric campsite on an intermittent drainage in eastern Uvalde County, Texas. A possible living floor was located during testing of the site. This floor contained two hearths and four possible postholes in a mixed context with prehistoric artifacts of differing temporal periods and modern historic trash. Due to the badly mixed nature of the deposits and the lack of cultural integrity, the excavation was discontinued.

During the month of October 1975, a small prehistoric site, 41 UV 68, was subjected to an archaeological test. No archaeological features were located but a zone containing artifactual material of mixed temporal context was explored. The site appears to be a minor manifestation of prehistoric occupations in the Uvalde area.

Functional Analysis Of Great Basin Projectile Points, Roger Wiggin

This paper presents a refined methodology for distinguishing the stone points of arrows from the stone points of spear thrower darts in archaeological assemblages from the Great Basin. The methodology was developed from a sample of 111 complete stone points collected during the archaeological reconnaissance and testing of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Harney County, Oregon, 1971-1974. The points were measured for five metric variables and frequency histograms of each variable were generated by computer. The effectiveness of each variable as an index of functional class (i.e., arrow point vs. dart point) was judged on the basis of the apparent …

The endocrine system, coordinated with the central nervous system, is an important mediator of the genetic-environmental interactions which influence the development of human phenotypes. For this reason, endocrine parameters provide an important source of information for anthropological studies. This research focuses on the role of the endocrine system in normal human variability, with emphasis on the steroid hormones, which affect numerous aspects of mammalian morphology, physiology and behavior. The size and composition of households and families in the Lutheran parishes of Finström and Kökar, Åland, Finland are described by data derived from linking the parish Communion Books and civil tax records (mantal). The period between 1760 and 1880 is examined via single year cross-sectional analyses for the years 1760, 1800, 1840, and 1880. Overall aggregate data for the two parishes reveal a pattern of formation and maintenance of large, multi-generational households in the eighteenth century.
