Anthropological Studies

Recent research on Middle-Late Woodland and Mississippian subsistence-settlement change has modified substantially the traditional models of late fall, coastal to interior transhumance patterns along the southeastern Atlantic Coast. The archeological, ethnohistorical, and environmental data suggest that the interior Lower Coastal Plain of South Carolina was exploited on a year-round basis during the late prehistoric period. These data and those recovered from two archeological sites, which were investigated by the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers' Cooper River Rediversion Project, indicate differences in the subsistence strategies between the Middle-Late Woodland and Mississippian populations, however. …

Client Success Or Failure In A Halfway House, Patrick G. Donnelly, Brian E. Forschner

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

Halfway houses today are diverse entities. Seiter, et al. (1977) found that almost 60 percent of the houses in the United States are private nonprofit organizations. One-third were state operations with the remainder being federal, local or private profit organizations. The programs in the houses varied from those providing supervision and custody to those providing a full range of intensive in-house treatments for particular client needs. Some halfway houses handle only particular types of offenders (e.g., drug addicts) while others handle a wide range of offenders.

The need for this study stemmed from the fact that a large number of Middle Eastern students are coming to the United States of America to seek higher education. This has created a social problem for both the Middle Eastern students and their American counterparts because of the great differences between their cultures in the practice of dating and mating.

The objectives of the study were to examine the opinions of a sample of Middle Eastern students in the United States in regards to dating and mating practices. The sample size was one hundred students.

This paper is a study of two artists. They are hairdressers who are part of mainstream American culture. Juanita Sublett has been a hairdresser for twenty years, and has had basically the same clientele for that time. Her true artistry is not in the technical aspect of hairdos, but in the creation of a setting in which her clients wish to be.

John Hopfensperger has been a hairdresser for eight years. He entered beauty school because he could be supported by his parents without having the academic pressures of college. After completing beauty school he had no intention of becoming …

Reported cases of incest in Multnomah County, Oregon, as in the rest of the country, are increasing yearly. Effective networking between agencies is important in order to successfully work with the problem. The research problem of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the present network of agencies working with incest in Multnomah County. In order to evaluate network effectiveness the following objectives were established: to provide a "cultural" description of the major components of the Multnomah County network; to determine whether a common definition of incest among practitioners exists and to compare the networking system in this county …
