Archaeological Conservation As Process And Product: A Federal Perspective, Ronald D. Anzalone
Archaeological Conservation As Process And Product: A Federal Perspective, Ronald D. Anzalone
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Countless books and articles have either explored in some depth, or at least touched upon, the conservation of our cultural heritage. For the purposes of this volume, it would be an exercise in futility to attempt to detail current procedural requirements for historic preservation through various federal statutes and regulations. A number of sources have attacked this task in the past (e.g., Scovill, Gordon and Anderson 1977; King, Hickman, and Berg 1977). None has managed to provide completely up-to-date information on even the regulatory oscillations current that year, and there have been a myriad of changes since 1977. If there …
Knife River Indian Villages Archaeological Program: An Overview, F. A. Calabrese
Knife River Indian Villages Archaeological Program: An Overview, F. A. Calabrese
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
The Knife River Indian Villages are located in North Dakota near the confluence of the Knife and Missouri Rivers, just north of the contemporary town of Stanton, North Dakota. They lie within the area between the Garrison Dam to the north and the Oahe Reservoir to the south, the last remaining unflooded segment of the Missouri River valley in the Dakotas. Within the area are river floodplains, terraces, dissected breaks and upland rolling terrain. Forests occur on the floodplain and lower terraces with a variety of native and exotic grasses found on the breaks and uplands. A number of relatively …
Listener Comments: A Form Of Collaboration In Conversational Narrative, Cynthia Dunn
Listener Comments: A Form Of Collaboration In Conversational Narrative, Cynthia Dunn
Honors Papers
To show that while comments by listeners do have the appreciative and encouraging role described above, this is not their only role. In her study of Hawaiian children, Watson (1975) discovered that two children would frequently tell a story in tandem, one child taking the role of lead narrator, the other interjecting comments which elaborated on, rephrased. summarized, and otherwise supported the main narrator's story. Robinson has recently called into question the applicability of this research to continental American white society (1981: 72-3), but I have found evidence of something similar, which I shall call "co-narration", among American whites. If …

Helminth Remains From Prehistoric Indian Coprolites On The Colorado Plateau, Karl J. Reinhard, Richard H. Hevly, Glenn A. Anderson
Karl Reinhard Publications
Examination of coprolites excavated from archaeological sites in the Americas demonstrates excellent preservation of helminth eggs and, in some cases, larvae. To gain an understanding of helminth parasitism in prehistory on the Colorado Plateau of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, 319 coprolites from 5 archaeological sites were analyzed. Helminth eggs and larvae were recovered after the coprolites were rehydrated, screened, and sedimented. At a sixth site, soils excavated from 5 rooms used as latrine areas were processed with palynological techniques. The results indicate that all but 1 of the prehistoric populations examined were infected with intestinal worms. The helminths implicated …
Belief Systems And Illness Experiences: The Case Of Non-Medical Healing Groups, Meredith B. Mcguire, D. J. Kantor
Belief Systems And Illness Experiences: The Case Of Non-Medical Healing Groups, Meredith B. Mcguire, D. J. Kantor
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research
An important, and often neglected, aspect of the illness experience is meaning—that is, how affected persons make sense of their experiences. Responses to illness, coping strategies, and the healing process itself are all shaped by the meanings people apply to their illnesses. This chapter examines some of the nonmedical approaches to illness used by middle-class suburbanites in order to highlight the importance of meaning in all illness experiences. The particular interpretations applied in these alter-. native healing systems vary, but the way these interpretive frameworks shape the illness experience sheds light on the broader significance of meaning in health, …

Supranational Networks: States And Firms - Expanded Version, Alvin W. Wolfe
Supranational Networks: States And Firms - Expanded Version, Alvin W. Wolfe
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Deals with question: Why have so few scholars recognized the supranational system as something that is truly above the level of the state? Argues that my anthropological colleagues are, like others, bound by our own culture, traditions and narratives to such an extent that they are unable to study these pehnomena with the same "objectivity" and "relativism" with which they study the institutions of cultural systems with which they are less familiar. See especially the section on "Difficulties of Thinking Anew" (pp 3-5).
An Ethnographic Study Of Punk Rock In Western Michigan: Identity In A Youth Subculture, Robert P. Pomeroy
An Ethnographic Study Of Punk Rock In Western Michigan: Identity In A Youth Subculture, Robert P. Pomeroy
Masters Theses
This thesis presents an ethnosemantic analysis of the punk rock subculture of western Michigan. Assertion of personal identity is demonstrated to be the underlying principle which organizes punk terminology for their music, cultural environment, and members of the subcultures. An analysis of punk song lyrics, visual style, and verbal style demonstrates that this assertion of identity is accomplished through opposition to the dominant American culture. Punk rock can then be understood as a subculture of cultural rebellion which allows its members to assert their individuality through violation of culturally accepted aesthetic values.

At The Spiritual Grassroots: An Analysis Of Visionary Art & Artists, Ann Taft
At The Spiritual Grassroots: An Analysis Of Visionary Art & Artists, Ann Taft
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this thesis I focus on an art form alternately described as "naive," "visionary," "environmental," "singular," "individual," or "grassroots." Not easily placed within established academic or popular art categories, such art usually lands by default in the folk art pile and is quickly cast to the peripheries of that genre. In this thesis, I am not concerned with inventing another label for these artists and their work. Instead, I explore the possibility that visionary art may be a separate genre, but one to which folklore analysis may usefully be brought to bear.
Chapter One is a historical and bibliographical analysis …
