A 'Hedge' Against Cultural Dominance (A Review Of Counter Culture And Cultural Hegemony: Some Notes On The Youth Rebellion Of The 1960'S By A. Norman Klein), Patrick F. Mccarty

During the 1960's, student unrest became an issue of international proportions. College-age protesters participated in various forms of dissent (peaceful and violent) for various reasons. Because of their break with conventional beliefs and customs, the youth of the 60's were identified as a subculture or "counter culture". This counter culture was established to protest critical issues ignored by the dominant culture. In his article on counter culture and cultural hegemony, A. Norman Klein addresses the nature of cultural dominance in America. He argues that a study of the youth movement of the 60's reveals the true character of hegemonic culture.

Bokkos Fulani Pastoralism: Human And Herd Regulation In A Complex Ecological Setting, Joseph V. Hickey

This is a study of a Pastoral Fulani group residing in the vicinity of Bokkos, a market village forty-seven miles south of Jos in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Bokkos Fulani adaptation is relatively unique among Fulani pastoralists, because they do not live at the margins of a farming community, but inhabit and pasture cattle on the land of Ron agriculturalists.

Fulani settled the uninhabited Bokkos Plains in the early 19001s after British pacification. At the same time Ron farmers began to vacate defensive clusters along the Bokkos river, and they too settled the Plains. The result of this …

Most members of the Harvard !Kung Bushman Study Project who have thought about the subject of !Kung women's status agree that !Kung society may be the least sexist of any we have experienced. This impression contradicts some popularly held stereotypes about relations between the sexes in hunting and gathering societies. Because sex is one of the few bases for the differentiation of social and economic roles in societies of this type, it has probably been attributed more weight than it deserves. Book Review: The Dynamics Of Stylistic Change In Arikara Ceramics By James Deetz., Craig Johnson

In his conclusion, Deetz attempts. to, establish a link between the changes in residence and ceramic patterning in a more systematic way. He points out that, there can be three possible relationships between the two. First, there is no relationship between changes in social organization and ceramics. This denies the relationship between social structure and ceramic design in general. If true, other examples of this articulation would not be found in archaeological contexts. Mississippian Communities In The St. Francis Basin: A Central Place Model, Timothy C. Klinger

The development of Mississippian settlement models for northeast Arkansas is reviewed. It is argued that a five-tier central place hierarchy best accounts for the variability currently known to exist among Mississippian communities in the St. Francis basin.

The "Indian Problem" is a term frequently used without precise definition. It serves, perhaps, to bring to the mind of the general public conditions of poverty, backwardness, drunkenness, disrespect for the law, and lack of education and community organization among the Indians. An objection to this approach is that it does not provide adequate or systematic understanding of the basic nature of this "problem," but refers rather to the easily observable external manifestations. The "Indian Problem" approach also seems to attribute to all Indians an inherent tendency toward socially unacceptable behavior. A more profitable approach is to identify some of …
