Human Perceptions Of Animals And Animal Awareness: The Cultural Dimension, Elizabeth A. Lawrence Jan 1985

Human Perceptions Of Animals And Animal Awareness: The Cultural Dimension, Elizabeth A. Lawrence

Attitudes Towards Animals Collection

Culture is generally a powerful determinant of human perceptions of animals and the treatment animals receive in a given society. Fbr example, Plains Indians' views of the status of animals-their capacities, their awareness, and their place in the world relative to mankind-differ radically from those characteristic ofWestern thought. Many of the contemporary Crow Indians, a group of native Americans among which I have recently carried out anthropological field research, continue to look upon their horses according to traditional tribal belief. Their particular attitude toward horses conflicts with that of the dominant white society with which the Indians and their horses …

Status, Self, And Peers: An Ethnography Of Junior High School, Susan Martha Nesheim Allbee Jan 1985

Status, Self, And Peers: An Ethnography Of Junior High School, Susan Martha Nesheim Allbee

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This report begins with a brief discussion of the overall purpose of social science: to be of service to humankind. To examine and report one's findings is no longer the whole of the responsibility of social scientific research. One must also examine the purpose and objectives of that research. In view of those statements, the objective of this project--the gathering and analysis of information on the culture of junior high school students-- is to gain a better understanding of early adolescence and thereby offer opportunities for insights not only into their culture but to add to the body of knowledge …

Client Success Or Failure In A Halfway House, Patrick G. Donnelly, Brian E. Forschner Sep 1984

Client Success Or Failure In A Halfway House, Patrick G. Donnelly, Brian E. Forschner

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

Halfway houses today are diverse entities. Seiter, et al. (1977) found that almost 60 percent of the houses in the United States are private nonprofit organizations. One-third were state operations with the remainder being federal, local or private profit organizations. The programs in the houses varied from those providing supervision and custody to those providing a full range of intensive in-house treatments for particular client needs. Some halfway houses handle only particular types of offenders (e.g., drug addicts) while others handle a wide range of offenders.

Latessa and Allen (1982) suggest that the sociodemographic and criminal history backgrounds of clients …

This has created a social problem for both the Middle Eastern students and their American counterparts because of the great differences between their cultures in the practice of dating and mating.

The objectives of the study were to examine the opinions of a sample of Middle Eastern students in the United States in regards to dating and mating practices. The sample size was one hundred students.

A literature search of the …

Incest: A Study In Networking In Multnomah County, Oregon, Joanne Mcclarty

Dissertations and Theses

Reported cases of incest in Multnomah County, Oregon, as in the rest of the country, are increasing yearly. The research problem of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the present network of agencies working with incest in Multnomah County. In order to evaluate network effectiveness the following objectives were established: to provide a "cultural" description of the major components of the Multnomah County network; to determine whether a common definition of incest among practitioners exists and to compare the networking system in this county …
