Crossroad Of Empire: The Church And State On The Rio Grande Frontier Of Coahuila And Texas 1700-1821, Felix D. Almaraz Jr. Jan 1979

Crossroad Of Empire: The Church And State On The Rio Grande Frontier Of Coahuila And Texas 1700-1821, Felix D. Almaraz Jr.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The monograph being published here is the first in a series of data-oriented reports derived from the archaeological and ethnohistorical project centered on the modern town of Guerrero, Coahuila, Mexico. To our gratification, the project produced a great deal of information. We have decided to meet the problem of adequate publication of the results in two ways. The first is by a volume of essays which aim at synthesizing the various aspects of the data and drawing conclusions from it. This single volume will be published elsewhere and is now (1979) in preparation. The other means of publication is by …

Ethnohistoric Notes On Indian Groups Associated With Three Spanish Missions At Guerrero, Coahuila, T. N. Campbell Jan 1979

Ethnohistoric Notes On Indian Groups Associated With Three Spanish Missions At Guerrero, Coahuila, T. N. Campbell

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Three Spantsh missions, San Francisco Solano, San Juan Bautista and San Bernardo, were established near the Rio Grande at present Guerrero, northeastern Coahuila, during the years 1700-1703. Remnants of at least 88 distinctively named Indian groups at various times came to live at one or more of these missions. In 1975- 1976, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas San Antonio, supported by funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Kathryn O'Connor Foundation, conducted archaeological excavations at two of these missions, San Juan Bautista and San Bernardo. Since the cultural debris recovered from excavations is …

A Folkloristic Look At Cockfighting, Marian Krontz May 1978

A Folkloristic Look At Cockfighting, Marian Krontz

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Four Nebraska Cockfighters responded orally to queries about breeding, conditioning, heeling and handling of game fowl, and also about the public image and stereotypes of cockfighting and Its participants. Mastery of breeding, conditioning, heeling and handling is what makes a successful cockfighter, while association with the sport means having to face charges of cruelty to animals and accusations that only the seedier segments of society are attracted to it. Cockfighters are prepared to defend and rationalize their sport with a uniform set of excuses. They claim their adversaries are hypocritical in their accusations. Cockfighters also maintain that the Lord created …

The Role Of Cultural Anthropology In The Education Of Social Service Personnel, James W. Green Mar 1978

The Role Of Cultural Anthropology In The Education Of Social Service Personnel, James W. Green

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Anthropology contributes to the education of social work students through its emphasis on the role of culture and of social context in the delivery of social services. Examples are provided with special emphasis on child abuse and protective services. While anthropology has traditionally been associated with the study of minorities, its role in the critique of other social work concerns is suggested.

The Fort Sam Houston Project: An Archaeological And Historical Assessment, Andrea Gerstle, Thomas C. Kelly, Cristi Assad

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In March 1977, a contract was effected between the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio (CAR-UTSA), and the Fort Worth District Army Corps of Engineers to conduct an archaeological and historical survey of Fort Sam Houston and its south-central Texas properties. This contract (DACA 63-77-6-0081) is part of an overall Environmental Impact Statement required by the National Environmental Policy Act of 1959, implementing Department of Defense Directive 6050.1 and Army Regulation AR 200-1.

The survey was designed to provide an inventory and evaluation of rapidly disappearing archaeological and historical resources and to evaluate impacts and …

Papers In Applied Archaeology, Joel Gunn Jan 1978

Papers In Applied Archaeology, Joel Gunn

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The papers presented in this volume are concerned not only with the public interest aspect of archaeology but also with alternative and direct practical benefits. The thinking presented was occasioned by a massive increase in public expenditure for archaeological investigation. The papers certainly do not exhaust the topic, but they provide a fairly well rounded view of practical archaeology in the state of Texas.

Background To The Archaeology Of Chaparrosa Ranch, Southern Texas, Thomas R. Hester Jan 1978

Background To The Archaeology Of Chaparrosa Ranch, Southern Texas, Thomas R. Hester

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Chaparrosa Ranch, located in Zavala County, southern Texas constitutes an ideal area for long-range archaeological research. Flowing' through the ranch are Chaparrosa and Turkey Creeks, two major tributaries in the Nueces River system. These creeks and subsidiary drainages have cut pronounced valleys and terrace systems. As of this writing, nearly 200 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites have been documented in these valleys and in the adjacent uplands. Field work at several known sites in the Chaparrosa Ranch was conducted in August and September 1970, and the results are found in the first paper in this volume.

A Bibliography Of Anthropology-Related Serial Publications In The University Of Nebraska Libraries, Kenneth P. Lohrentz, Ann Larson, Linda Mager

Nebraska Anthropologist

This bibliography of anthropological serials in the University of Nebraska Libraries has been undertaken primarily for two reasons. The first follows from the incredibly diverse nature of the discipline itself, for the study of man and his origins has given rise to various methods of inquiry and interdisciplinary overlays. As Sol Tax has pointed out, the study of man appears to have no natural boundaries. It comes as little surprise, therefore, that the bibliography representing the published record of such a varied field of study should itself be extremely diffuse. Add to this natural diffusion the characteristic pattern of dispersed …
