Excavations At Sites 41lk31/32 And 41lk202 In The Choke Canyon Reservoir, South Texas, Robert F. Scott Iv, Daniel E. Fox

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Site 41 LK 31/32 is located in Live Oak County, southern Texas on a wide horseshoe bend of the Frio River, approximately 16 km west of the Frio's confluence with the Nueces River. Construction of the Choke Canyon Reservoir by the Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) had necessitated an excavation program at the site prior to destruction. Investigations conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, were carried out in two stages, culminating in a major excavation during the summer of 1978. An indication of the depth and significance of cultural deposits at the site …

Proverbs : Tools For World View Studies : An Exploratory Comparison Of The Bemba Of Zambia And The Shona Of Zimbabwe, Larry L. Niemeyer

Dissertations and Theses

The proverbs of people - defined by Webster as short sayings "in common use expressing a well-known truth or common fact ascertained by experience or observation" - have been an object of study to many kinds of people for many decades. Robert R. Marett has said that proverbs are a key to both the language and culture of a people. But, knowledge of the language and culture of a people, in itself, cannot be satisfying to the discerning anthropologist. An effort must be made to identify and understand the categories of thought, codes and symbols that undergird their language and …

Henna: Uses Of It In The Middle East And North Africa, Diane M. Humphrey-Newell May 1981

Henna: Uses Of It In The Middle East And North Africa, Diane M. Humphrey-Newell

Dissertations and Theses

Since gradually replacing red ochre as a dye in ancient Egypt, henna has been cultivated throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Traditional uses dealing with body art and medicine were associated with traits commonly connected with the color red, the dichotomies of life and death, good and evil. Today, these traits have all but disappeared while henna's use as a cosmetic dye, an embellishment, has remained prevalent in some regions. There can be no doubt that many uses and symbolisms attached to uses have gone unrecorded, been forgotten, and are irretrievable. The purpose of this research was to preserve …

Historic Indian Groups Of The Choke Canyon Reservoir And Surrounding Area, Southern Texas, T. N. Campbell, T. J. Campbell

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

This volume is the first in a series to be published on the archaeology, history and ethnohistory of the Choke Canyon Reservoir area in southern Texas. Intensive, coordinated cultural resource investigations have been underway in the reservoir basin since 1977, under the terms of Contract No. 7-07-50-V0897 (Nueces River Project), between the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio and the Water and Power. Resources Service (formerly the Bureau of Reclamation) of the United States Department of the Interior.

Guerrero, Coahuila, Mexico: A Guide To The Town And Missions, Jack D. Eaton Jan 1981

Guerrero, Coahuila, Mexico: A Guide To The Town And Missions, Jack D. Eaton

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

This guide to the town and missions at Guerrero, Coahuila, is based largely upon the research efforts of the Gateway Project, an archaeological and ethnohistoric study of the area conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio during 1975 to 1977. Because the project was dealing with historic mission buildings which housed native American inhabitants of the region, the project had both historic and prehistoric aspects. The Indians gathered into the missions where inheritors of the native cultural tradition began at least 11,000 years ago. Therefore, an archaeological survey of prehistoric sites in the …
