Beads Of The Early Islamic Period, Peter Francis Jr.
Beads Of The Early Islamic Period, Peter Francis Jr.
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Beads from four sites involved in Early Islamic trade (7th to 12th century) are representative of the role the Muslim world played in the Indian Ocean Bead Trade. The continuation of Classical techniques, the Islamic trade's self-sufficiency, and the insight beads provide concerning past behavior are some of the issues explored.
Tümpisa (Panamint) Shoshone Dictionary, Jon P. Dayley
Tümpisa (Panamint) Shoshone Dictionary, Jon P. Dayley
Faculty & Staff Authored Books
This dictionary is primarily of the Death Valley variety of what has come to be known in the linguistic and anthropological literature in recent years as Panamint (e.g., Freeze and Iannucci 1979; Lamb 1958 and 1964; McLaughlin 1987; Miller 1984), or sometimes Panamint Shoshone (Miller et al. 1971). In the nineteenth century and up to the middle of this century, it was often called Coso (sometimes spelled Koso) or Coso Shoshone (e.g., Kroeber 1925; Lamb 1958). In aboriginal times and even well into this century, Panamint was spoken by small bands of people living in southeastern California and extreme southwestern …

Tümpisa (Panamint) Shoshone Grammar, Jon P. Dayley
Tümpisa (Panamint) Shoshone Grammar, Jon P. Dayley
Faculty & Staff Authored Books
This monograph is an introductory descriptive grammar of Tümpisa Shoshone, meant to provide both layman and specialist with a basic understanding of how the language works as a linguistic system. In this sense, it is intended to be a "nuts and bolts" grammar with lots of examples illustrating the most important grammatical elements and processes in the language.

The Sinagua And Aggregation: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Cultural Development, Joshua Aaron Piker
Honors Papers
Archaeology is, like any good sub-field of anthropology, concerned with the descriptions of, and comparisons between, cultural systems. The evidence used by archaeologists is, however, often of a very different nature than that used by ethnographers or linguists. Language is, of course, not preserved in the archaeological record, and many of the everyday behaviors that ethnographers are able to take for granted are invisible at a distance of two thousand years. This paper will be concerned with the study of social organization and group dynamics. However, determining the "structure" of a prehistoric society is notoriously difficult. Benson has stated that …

A Sociobiological Perspective On The Development Of Human Reproductive Strategies, Patricia Draper, Henry Harpending
A Sociobiological Perspective On The Development Of Human Reproductive Strategies, Patricia Draper, Henry Harpending
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Humans show a great deal of variability in their reproductive behavior, including types of sexual activity, types of ties between males and females, and ways of arranging for the rearing of offspring. We will consider three principal topics: (1) Father absence versus father presence, contrasting children who are reared in a family system in which there is a closely involved and economically contributing father in contrast to a family system in which women rear their children in cooperation with other women (usually kin) and without consistent help from a man who is father to children. (2) Peer rearing versus parent …
