Artifact, Landscape, And Temporality In Eastern Mediterranean Archaeological Landscape Studies, Luann Wandsnider
Artifact, Landscape, And Temporality In Eastern Mediterranean Archaeological Landscape Studies, Luann Wandsnider
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Intensive survey over the last several decades has detailed an archaeological surface record in the Mediterranean that Cherry (1983:395, emphasis in original) describes as "likely to consist of a virtually continuous spatial distribution of material over the landscape, but a distribution extremely variable in density." In addition, geoarchaeological work, often coupled with survey, has demonstrated just how dynamic Mediterranean surfaces have been. Both of these field practices, intensive survey and geoarchaeology, were carried out in part to enable regional settlement pattern studies, to collect accurate, reliable, and precise data about past settlements and their location with respect to each other …

Archeological And Geoarcheological Survey Of State Highway 35 Between Angleton And Old Ocean, Brazoria County, Texas, Richard B. Mahoney, David D. Kuehn, Jason D. Weston
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
During March through July 2003, The Center for Archaeological Research of The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted a cultural resources survey, including geoarcheological studies, along portions of State Highway 35 from Angleton to Old Ocean in Brazoria County, Texas. This survey was conducted under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 3091 and was performed for the Texas Department of Transportation, Environmental Affairs Division. During the early phases of the survey, a Historic Context for the project was developed by Hardy-Heck-Moore, Inc. of Austin, Texas. This Historic Context was used to guide the latter phases of the survey, and is reproduced …

The Development Of An Agricultural Landscape Along A Portion Of The U.S. Highway 277 Corridor, With A Case Study Of The Cotton Industry In Haskell, Texas, Martha Doty Freeman
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In February 2002, Prewitt and Associates, Inc., contracted with the Texas Department of Transportation, Environmental Affairs Division, to complete tasks describing the history and architectural resources of the U.S. Highway 277 Wichita Falls, to Abilene, Texas, corridor. Task 1 involved producing a broad overview of the corridor focusing on railroad construction and development of an agricultural landscape. The overview, constituting the first part of this report, provides a history of agriculture, transportation, and community development along the corridor, and identifies the forces at play in the development of the corridor that resulted in construction of specific properties. Task 2 involved …
A Field Guide To Industrial Properties In Texas, Amy E. Dase
A Field Guide To Industrial Properties In Texas, Amy E. Dase
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In the truest sense, industrial properties are more likely than any others to fit architect Louis Sullivan’s oft-quoted assertion that “form ever follows function.” Despite their substantial role in economic and social spheres, industrial properties have long been glossed over by those interested in material culture. It seems, in fact, that neither a comprehensive nor a contemporary overview of these property typologies has been accomplished to date.
A Field Guide to Industrial Properties in Texas is an attempt to address an identifiable information gap. It takes into consideration industrial properties that are related to the petroleum and natural gas, grain, …
Contested Lands, Contested Identities: Revisiting The Historical Geographies Of North America's Indigenous Peoples, Douglas Deur
Contested Lands, Contested Identities: Revisiting The Historical Geographies Of North America's Indigenous Peoples, Douglas Deur
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
In my work with the tribes and First Nations of western North America, I am told the same stories again and again. In intricate and sometimes gruesome detail, I am told how the white world, in its efforts to occupy and claim the western half of the continent over the last two centuries, employed myriad strategies—strategies of conquest—to separate indigenous peoples from their lands. And in these stories, tribal members, no matter their levels of education or backgrounds, recognize that the military conflicts, genocide, territorial dispossession and displacement, and enforced marginalization that has characterized Indian-white relations over this period cannot …

Saugatuck's Shining Shore: The Transition Of A Michigan Community Into A Resort Town, 1870-1930, Kyran V. Kelley
Masters Theses
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries many communities adapted themselves to the leisure industry with the growth of a middle class that had time for leisure activities within the United States. One impetus for this change suggested for the period is a lack of manufacturing and extractive activities (Brown 1995).
This thesis tests this scenario on one community of the period, Saugatuck, Michigan, by examining the employment and business structures of the town while also examining land use. This was accomplished through the use of both primary and secondary documents.
Data gathered and placed within its historical context …
Slavery In The Platte Region, H. Jason Combs
Slavery In The Platte Region, H. Jason Combs
Nebraska Anthropologist
Missouri's bid for statehood reflected the struggle to extend the southern slave culture onto the western frontier of settlement. The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 and the Missouri Compromise set specific geographic boundaries for the extension of slavery, which in turn created distinctive patterns of migration and settlement on the frontier. The Platte Purchase region of northwest Missouri is one of the areas that reflect slavery's influence on settlement. This paper will discuss slave ownership, the need for slavery, and explain the geographic distribution of slaves in the Platte region.
Child Sexual Abuse In Ireland: An Historical And Anthropological Note, Kevin Lalor
Child Sexual Abuse In Ireland: An Historical And Anthropological Note, Kevin Lalor
Articles
Child sexual abuse in Ireland has entered the public domain only in the last twenty years. This process was accelerated by a number of high profile cases which became public in the mid 1990s. Prior to the recent past, few references to child sexual abuse in Ireland exist. The first written evidence is found in the Penitentials of the early Christian period. Penance is specified for those that “misuse” children. Mention of adult child sexual relations is also found in the Brehon law texts. Historians, sociologists and anthropologists of childhood suggest that patterns of child rearing vary across time and …
Basic Incompatibilities Between Evolutionary And Behavioral Archaeology, Michael J. O'Brien, R. L. Lyman, R. D. Leonard
Basic Incompatibilities Between Evolutionary And Behavioral Archaeology, Michael J. O'Brien, R. L. Lyman, R. D. Leonard
History Faculty Publications (Archived)
Schiffer (1996) recently proposed that, despite some incompatibilities, considerable common ground exists between behavioral archaeology and evolutionary or selectionist, archaeology. He concludes that there is no fundamental reason why the two approaches cannot work in concert to explain human behavioral change. There are, however, several important reasons why the two programs, at least as currently conceived, cannot work together in any thoroughly integrated fashion. Although both programs employ inference, behavioral archaeology conflates the distinct roles of configurational and immanent properties, searches for nomothetic answers to questions about human behavior, overlooks historical contingency when inferring and explaining the nature of past …
Making Histories: The Torres Strait Expedition Of 1898, Elizabeth Edwards
Making Histories: The Torres Strait Expedition Of 1898, Elizabeth Edwards
Pacific Studies
The Cambridge Torres Strait Expedition used photography to address two agendas, both of which were grounded in the temporal ambiguities of photography. Photography was used first as an integrated tool of anthropological investigation, particularly in the field of salvage ethnography and through “reenactment”; and second as a site of social interaction between the expedition and the Torres Strait Islanders through the exchange and display of photographs. I argue that these two agendas and their function as “history” are grounded in the temporal ambiguities inherent in photographic inscription. The first, the scientific, depended on the construction and representation of a “static” …

The Place Of Persons With Disabilities In Rotuman Society, Jan Rensel, Alan Howard
The Place Of Persons With Disabilities In Rotuman Society, Jan Rensel, Alan Howard
Pacific Studies
In Rotuma, as in many other small, face-to-face societies, persons with disabilities are treated not as members of categories based on their conditions, but as individuals having whole constellations of characteristics and interpersonal histories. Their roles are not scripted on the basis of disabilities, but patterned by a number of key cultural principles that guide all relationships, including notions of immanent justice for wrongdoing, expectations of generosity and reciprocity, personal autonomy, and concern for family honor. Case studies and analyses of exchange interactions are presented to illustrate these points.

Akyem Te: The Technology And Socio-Cultural Setting Of The Abompe Bauxite-Beadmaking Industry, Ghana, Yaw Bredwa-Mensah
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Drawing primarily on data obtained from recent research at Akyem Abompe, Ghana, this paper examines the technology and socio-cultural setting of a stone-beadmaking industry in the forest zone of Ghana. Preliminary ethnographic observation of the industry not only reveals that it is community-based, but that it also interacts in a complex way with other local crafts in the village. The production process and marketing of the beads are discussed, as is the antiquity of the industry.
