Recovery Of Helminths From Prehistoric Feces: The Cultural Ecology Of Ancient Parasitism, Karl J. Reinhard Aug 1985

Recovery Of Helminths From Prehistoric Feces: The Cultural Ecology Of Ancient Parasitism, Karl J. Reinhard

Karl Reinhard Publications

Several helminth parasites have been recovered from archaeological sites on the Colorado Plateau. These include Ascaris, Trichuris, Enterobius, Moniliformis, and tapeworms in the families Hymenolepidae and Taeniidae. The recovery of these animals demonstrates that cross-temporal: comparison of parasitism between different prehistoric lifestyles is possible. Such comparison might elucidate the effects of changing lifestyle and subsistance pattern on human parasitism.

Desiccated feces recovered from archaelogical deposits were studied. Hunter-gatherer feces were selected from Dust Devil Cave in southeastern Utah. Agriculturalist feces were studied from Antelope House, a cave site in northeastern Arizona, and Salmon Ruins, a Pueblo …

Two Views Of Sex Differences In Socialization, Patricia Draper Jan 1985

Two Views Of Sex Differences In Socialization, Patricia Draper

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

The literature on the socialization of human sex differences is likely to remind many students of the parable about the blind men who were grouped around an elephant, each trying to describe to the others what the elephant was like. Several traditions of research in the social sciences have been involved in the study of why the sexes are different. One that emphasizes deliberate sex role training of children owes most of its insights to learning theory and developmental psychology. It regards sex role socialization as the result of interplay between the environmental experience and the child's active learning and …

Rethinking Ritual, Peter Mclaren Jan 1984

Rethinking Ritual, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Recent works by students of contemporary ritual (or "ritologists," as Ronald Grimes calls them) supports the notion that ritual is an important variable not just in tribal culture but also in modern industrial culture. I'm referring to studies that have been undertaken by such ardent ritual exegetes as Roy Rappaport, Barbara Myerhoff, Ronald Grimes, Robert Bocock, Sally Falk Moore, and Richard Schechner. Grimes has begun the important work of consolidating research on ritual; he has taken a field of scholarship which was doggedly parochial and helped to expand it into a protoscience of its own. (1) The work of these …

The Angler’S Angle: An Ethnography Of The Bass Fishermen, Ellen Ray Millhollin Irish

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Angler's Angle is an ethnographic (cultural description) of the bass fishermen . The purpose of this thesis is two-fold: (1) to present a better understanding of the ethnographic process and its usefulness as a too l within the social sciences, and (2) to illustrate this usefulness by the study of a cultural scene that often goes unnoticed in our Western society. An examination in Chapter 1 on the background of cultural studies (undertaken for the most part to de scribe non-Western societies), sets the tone for the use of ethnography today. Research on sub-cultures within our own society is …

The Loving Of The Game: A Study Of Basketry In The Mammoth Cave Area, Denis O. Kiely Dec 1983

The Loving Of The Game: A Study Of Basketry In The Mammoth Cave Area, Denis O. Kiely

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The production and marketing of baskets in the Mammoth Cave area of Kentucky from 1880 to the present is observed in light of the cultural, technical, aesthetic, ad traditional aspects involved. The process of making a white oak ribbed basket is documented, as well as the technical and aesthetic variables from which the basket maker renders his product. The changing role of social organization and communication in the production and marketing of a traditional craft objects is also considered.

Beyond 'Formal' Vs. 'Informal' Education: Uses Of Psychological Theory In Anthropological Research, Claudia Strauss Sep 1983

Beyond 'Formal' Vs. 'Informal' Education: Uses Of Psychological Theory In Anthropological Research, Claudia Strauss

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

For at least the last ten years cross-cultural research on the cognitive consequences of education has been dominated by the theoretical dichotomy between "formal" and "informal" education. The paradigm of formal education is the style of schooling developed in the industrialized West. It has been defined as any form of education that is deliberate, carried on "out of context" in a special setting outside of the routines of daily life, and made the responsibility of the larger social group. "Informal education" refers to education that takes place "in context" as children participate in everyday adult activities. It is the predominant …

Father Absence And Reproductive Strategy: An Evolutionary Perspective, Patricia Draper, Henry Harpending Oct 1982

Father Absence And Reproductive Strategy: An Evolutionary Perspective, Patricia Draper, Henry Harpending

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Explanations offered by social scientists for the effects of father absence on children are reviewed; certain aspects of these interpretations are found wanting. Another explanation using theory from evolutionary biology is suggested: children show evolved, sensitive-period learning in early childhood which is linked to mother's pair-bond status or to mother's attitude toward males. As a result of children's perceptions a developmental track is established, which influences expression of reproductive strategy in adulthood. Male children born into matrifocal households exhibit at adolescence a complex of aggression, competition, low male parental investment, and derogation of females and feminity, while females show early …

Human And Cultural Ecology: A Partial Bibliography, Michael C. Gunn Jan 1980

Human And Cultural Ecology: A Partial Bibliography, Michael C. Gunn

Nebraska Anthropologist

The following bibliography represents a partial listing of books and articles dealing with human and cultural ecology. Central to this bibliography are titles dealing with the conceptual and methodological aspects of human/cultural ecology as applicable to the broad field of anthropology. Also of primary importance are titles dealing with the anthropological use of population demography. Topics of related interest (general ecology, human adaption, bioenergetics, etc.) are represented by selected titles. While the bibliography falls far short of total citation of all articles dealing with the aforementioned topics, it should provide a firm base upon which the student or researcher may …

Evolution For Anthropology: Setting Our House In Order (A Review Of Bringing It All Back Home By Gerald D. Berreman), Dennis Toom Jan 1977

Evolution For Anthropology: Setting Our House In Order (A Review Of Bringing It All Back Home By Gerald D. Berreman), Dennis Toom

Nebraska Anthropologist

In Berreman's article, as in most of the other articles in Reinventing Anthropology, the main topic of discussion is that, once again, the need for change has presented itself in the discipline: anthropology needs to be reinvented. The changes called for have to do with relevance, responsibility, receptivity and the like. None of the authors offers much in the way of suggestions for accomplishing this ideological overhaul for anthropology; they only acknowledge the need for it. Processes of change are characteristically disruptive, producing harmful and negative effects during the transition, and change in anthropology is no different.

Cultural Pressure On Sex Differences, Patricia Draper Nov 1975

Cultural Pressure On Sex Differences, Patricia Draper

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

This paper suggests that sex differences in the behavior of children exist but are not necessarily intensified under certain cultural conditions. Under conditions of culture change to a sedentary economy, certain elements of male and female differentiated behavior are exploited in the process of increasing sex differentiation.

Observation On Female Cooperation Among The Zapotecs, An Indigenous People Of Southern Mexico, J. M. Brueske Jan 1975

Observation On Female Cooperation Among The Zapotecs, An Indigenous People Of Southern Mexico, J. M. Brueske

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Cross-cultural study has suggested that the presence of an extradomestic market for women's produce is one precondition for the development of female solidarity groups, and that such groups seem to be antecedent to female public power and/or authority. If status is defined in these terms, then the Zapotec women of Asuncion, a village of the inland Isthmus of Tehuantepec in southern Mexico, have not attained the preconditions of public power and/or authority. The complementary nature of husband and wife in the economic sphere assures women of some domestic power, however, and women do not seem to perceive their status as …

!Kung Women: Contrasts In Sexual Egalitarianism In Foraging And Sedentary Contexts, Patricia Draper Jan 1975

!Kung Women: Contrasts In Sexual Egalitarianism In Foraging And Sedentary Contexts, Patricia Draper

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Most members of the Harvard !Kung Bushman Study Project who have thought about the subject of !Kung women's status agree that !Kung society may be the least sexist of any we have experienced. This impression contradicts some popularly held stereotypes about relations between the sexes in hunting and gathering societies. Because sex is one of the few bases for the differentiation of social and economic roles in societies of this type, it has probably been attributed more weight than it deserves. The men are commonly depicted in rather romantic terms, striving with their brothers to bring home the precious meat …

Societal Complexity And Moral Development: A Kenyan Study., Carolyn P. Edwards Jan 1975

Societal Complexity And Moral Development: A Kenyan Study., Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study examines the moral judgment levels (as measured by Kohlberg’s 6-stage moral judgment interview) for two Kenyan samples. The first sample includes a culturally and racially group of 35 young men and 17 women studying at the University of Nairobi, while the second sample consists of 44 males and 14 females living in seven communities in the Central and Western Provinces of Kenya who were interviewed by a cadre of trained University students on their school vacation. The moral judgment interview included four hypothetical moral dilemmas and a standard set of probing questions. Three of the dilemmas were standard …

The Joking Relationship In An Urban Voluntary Association, Cristy Stevens Jan 1975

The Joking Relationship In An Urban Voluntary Association, Cristy Stevens

Nebraska Anthropologist

The Miainstreet club is a small voluntary association located in a small Midwestern city. It is a formally-chartered corporation and part of a large international federation of clubs designed to provide economic and social services to the communities in which they are located. It is characterized by membership criteria and a stated purpose of service to community. The Mainstreet club presently lists twenty-four active members, a small size in comparison with other similar service clubs in the city where it is located. In the course of my research, I became aware of a rather formalized pattern of joking and banter …
