Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The size of a dairy cow is important from the standpoint of feed consumption and economy of production and also as an indication of the expected size of offspring. The ultimate disposal of dairy cattle is for beef, and the measure of returns is based upon size and condition. A method for the determination of the approximate weights of dairy females, where scales are not available, is needed. Measurements of dairy cattle which show development and skeletal growth by ages in relationship to weight are presented here for four different dairy breeds.

On January 30, 1937, at his home at 3033 Deakin Street in Berkeley, California, Lawrence Bruner, pioneer American economic entomologist and a world authority on grasshoppers and related insects (Orthoptera), as well as the person who more than any other individual was responsible for the organization of the Nebraska Ornithologists’ Union, passed away after a severe illness of a few days that culminated a rather extended period of gradually declining health. The central objective of these studies has been to gather as accurate data as possible regarding normal prenatal development in farm animals. Once this is established as a base we or other workers will be in a position to study the specific effects of unfavorable environments, such as deficiency rations, excess fat, etc. Our work has progressed far enough so that we are now incorporating some of the latter in our studies.

It has been customary in writing theses dealing with taxonomic problems to collect data from an entire county. Having had occasion to collect botanical specimens from the Tasco Lake for work in biology at the Sheridan High School, the wealth of plant life to be found here became apparent. The area ranges from xerophytic forms on the uplands to the hydrophytic forms in the lake and marshes. Many of the latter have never been reported from Western Kansas. Collections in preserving fluid were made of the water forms found and specimens of the landforms were mounted on regulation-sized sheets properly …

1. The nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus content of 127 newly hatched chicks was determined. 2. Thirty newly hatched chicks were fed accurately known amounts of a good chick mash for 60 days. At the end of the period nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, and fat were determined for each chick. 3. By means of the comparative slaughter test the retention of nitrogen was found to be 37.8 per cent, calcium 43.4 per cent, and phosphorus 27.3 per cent of the respective elements fed. 4. As early as 1850 many reports of observations of the blind cave animals were made by both scientific and popular writers. Tellkempf, Agassiz, Forbes and Silliman were some of the earlier scientists who studied the eyes of cave animals. Eigenmann made a histological study of the cave vertebrates of America. In a study of Forbesichthys papilliferus, a semi-blind cave fish, Jennie Miller Orr found important structural modifications in the eyes of this species. Since no comparative histological studies of the eyes of cave animals seem to have been made, it was decided to make such a study with a view …

The hydrography of Utah may be thought of as being roughly divided into two large general drainage areas--, the Colorado River draining the eastern halt and southern portion ot the state and the Bonneville Drainage encompassing the remaining part of it. Earlier workers have listed eight genera and fourteen species of minnows occuring in Utah. Of these this report includes seven genera and ten species found within the borders of our state.

The specimens studied during this investigation were taken incidentally during a general faunal survey of certain peculiar streams flowing from underground channels. On casual examination it was evident that they belonged to the cave fish group but were not the well known almost colorless blind variety. After checking the descriptions in various vertebrate manuals it appeared that they were probably a new species.

There are three groups of cave fishes, the non-blind, the semi-blind and the blind. Chologaster, or the Rice Field Minnows of South Carolina, are members of the non-blind group. Forbesichthys of southern Illinois and Kentucky is an …

The spiny dogfish is a small shark that averages about two feet in length and three pounds in weight. It is called spiny because of the presence of a prominent spine on the boarder of each dorsal fin. The species has a wide distribution in the North Atlantic, occurring plentifully on the American and European shores, as well as in the Mediterranean Sea. The fish swim in enormous schools and are constantly in motion. The dogfish has no economic importance but is universally used for dissection in the zoological laboratory.

The parasitic fauna of ocean depths is practically unknown. Although an extensive fish population occurs at all depths, very little study has yet been made on the helminths of these fish. During the summers of 1930, 1931, and 1932 excellent opportunity was offered for the collection of parasites from fish trawled from depths varying from 40 to 582 fathoms at Tortugas, Florida.
