An attempt has been made to give as full a life history as possible of the best-known subspecies of each species and to avoid duplication by writing briefly of the others and giving only the characters of the subspecies, its range, and any -habits peculiar to it. In many cases certain habits, probably common to the species as a whole, have been recorded for only one subspecies. Such habits are mentioned under the subspecies on which the observations were made. The distribution gives the range of the species as a whole, with only rough outlines of the ranges of the …

A Study Of The Littoral Marine Isopod Crustacea Of The Dillon Beach Area, Robert James Menzies

The primary purpose of this study was to provide accurate diagnoses of the littoral marine isopod crustacea in the Dillon Beach area. Such a purpose involved a much more complete study of the anatomy of the species represented in the fauna than was heretofore performed. Certain anatomical structures deemed by earlier writers as specifically diagnostic are demonstrated to be unreliable and in a great many instances other structures previously neither described or figured by American writers are considered of paramount importance in species identification. The bird navigation theory as presented implies an organ or organs in the bird's physiology which are sensitive to the effect of its motion through the vertical component of the earth's magnetic field and to the effort exerted to overcome the coriolis force, due to the earth's rotation. Both these influences involve a set of lines which together form a navigational gridwork. By correlating its instantaneous land speed with the two above effects, a bird can fly to its home which is a unique point in this gridwork, or to related companion points existing in the gridwork at positions other …

The national wildlife refuge at Chincoteague, Virginia, is one of the newest in a chain of sanctuaries placed along the flight lanes of the waterfowl. Coming down from the north the principal links of the chain are Parker River, Montezuma, Susquehanna, Brigantine, and Bombay Hook. Then from Chincoteague the links run south, through Back Bay and Pea Island, Mattamuskeet and Cape Romain. Chincoteague, like other waterfowl refuges, is needed because birds migrate, and because in so doing they expose themselves to great dangers.

Peromyscus truel's a fairly common inhabitant of the upper sonaranlife zone of the Western States. It is an excellent laboratory anlmal with the limitation that captivity must be accompanied by forced activlty, in order to keep the animals within the limits of normal activity. This mouse is polyestrous and breeds from early spring to late fall. Observations have shown pregnancy in late September and in early February. It is the writer's belief that ovulation in the ovary occurs only when copulation has taken lace, because corpora lutea has only been found in pregnant or lactating females. The evidence is scanty …

Herons are well known because of their gregarious nesting habits. Like many others of the lower orders of birds they nest together in pure or mixed colonies of many different combinations and under diverse living conditions. The population of different colonies may vary from a few pairs to many thousands of pairs depending upon the nature and extent of the breeding area, the food supply available and the protection afforded either by natural or artificial means.

The preparation and staining of biological structures for microscopic examination is of extreme importance to the science of biology since almost all phases of biological advance are, at least to some degree, dependent upon microtechnical methods. Nevertheless, research workers and students of biological science are sooner or later impressed with the inadequacy of many of the microtechnical methods used by them and their colleagues. In the field of microtechnique there is difficulty in finding standardized methods which will uniformly bring optimum results. Studies on trematodes of marine organisms of the Pacific Coast have been of a scattered and fragmentary nature. J. Stafford (1904) collected and described a number of trematodes from fishes of the north Pacific, but, in his historical survey, Manter (1926) fails to mention specifically any studies covering the waters south of Canada. More recently, in the United States, several contributions to the field have been made by Dr. John E. Salmonellosis suis or pig typhus, also designated as pig typhoid, infectious necrotic enteritis, or "necro," is an infectious disease among young pigs. It constitutes a major factor in the mortality of juvenile swine, and as such must be regarded as a more or less perennial hazard in swine production. Infectious necrotic enteritis caused by Salmonella suipestifer is the subject of the present publication.

A Study Of The Renal Vascular Supply In The Domestic Cat, Elizabeth Rosen

Studies on the normal and abnormal vascularization of the renal vessels in the domestic cat (felis domestica) indicate the frequency of anomalies that occur, but in most of the studies it is the inferior vena cava that is most often recorded. Among the occasional references to several renal veins or arteries we have Huntington and McClure, Elmer Butler, Gaylord Bates, William Darrach, and C.H. Fortune. Yet no study seems to have been made of individuals of any particular class. A superficial observation seems to indicate a large number of cats used in the laboratory had multiple renal veins. Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Advantage was taken of an opportunity to study the effects of penicillin on Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, the causative organism of swine erysipelas. Owing to the fact that swine cannot readily be infected with erysipelas by artificial methods, pigeons which are highly susceptible to the disease, were selected to serve as experimental animals. It was the purpose of these studies to ascertain whether or not the swine erysipelas bacillus is sensitive to the drug and incidentally to determine the possibility of finding application of penicillin in the treatment of swine.
