Previous literature indicates the opercular bone as a useful tool for the determination of age and growth of fish. The reliability and validity of this method is tested for two populations of Utah chub. Age and growth are calculated for 222 Utah chub collected from Panguitch Lake and 212 Utah chub collected from Navajo Lake, southern Utah, in 1952-1953 from both scales and opercular bones. Scales are measured with the aid of a projector. Opercular bones are measured directly. The center of growth of the opercular bone is posterior to the posterior lip of the fulcrum. The metacercaria of Ornithodiplostomum ptychocheilush as been reported by Faust (1918; Illinois Biological Monographs 4(1): 1-120) from mesenteries of the squawfish, Ptychocheilus oregonensis (Richardson), and by Hughes and Piszcek (1928; Journal of Parasitology 15: 58-62) and Van Haitsma (1930; Transactions of the American Microscopical Society 49: 140-153) in the northeastern sand shiner, Notropis deliciosus stramineus (Cope). Van Haitsma (1930) found the adults in mergansers, Mergus americanus, M. serrator, Lophodytes cucullatus, and the old squaw duck, Harelda hyemalis. These studies on the plankton of Tomales Bay were designed to determine the effects of such physical factors as tides, temperatures, salinities and sunshine on the quantities of various types of organisms, and to obtain a more comprehensive picture of estuarine life at the Pacific Marine Station. Crustacean spermatozoa are among the most peculiarly modified germ cells in the animal kingdom. Many of their striking cytological specializations may be observed in the sperm cells or Emerita analoga, the so-called sand crab. This animal has been used by the writer for studies on spermatogenesis and on spermatozoan behavior during the summer or 1951, 1952, and 1953 at the Pacific Marine Station.

The Skeletal Anatomy Of Several Species Of Salamanders With Special Reference To Bolitoglossa Rufescens (Cope), Afton M. Hansen

This paper deals with the complete skeletal anatomy ot Bolitoglossa rufescena (Cope). All parts are figured and described. In addition to this many of the main skeletal parts of Bolitoglossa platydactyla (Cuvier) Bolitoglossa occidentalis Taylor, and Bolitoglossa flaviventris (Schmidt) are described and figured. A comparison of the following parts of the above mentioned salamanders is presented: skull, atlas, ninth trunk vertebra, sixth caudal vertebra, carpals, tarsals and digits. The similarities and differences are pointed out as they appeared to the author. The relationship and specialization ot these species is discussed rather briefly.

Over the years, the disease, avian botulism, has been an important factor limiting populations of waterfowl, particularly in the West. Great numbers (doubtless millions) of ducks have died from this disease, and because of such heavy tolls, studies of the malady were begun early in the century and continued intermittently to the present time.

This summary brings up to 1950 the series of investigations on botulism by Wetmore (1918), Kalmbach (1930, 1932), Kalmbach and Gunderson (1934), Sperry (1947), and others. This information has been compiled as a service to those concerned with conservation of our waterfowl resources. A cooperative agreement …

The California Quail is native to the coastal and semi-arid regions of California extending north into Oregon. Two subspecies are commonly recognized. the California Quail (Lophortyx californica brunnescens Ridgway), and the Valley Quail (Lophortyx californica californica Shaw). The two forms are very similar in coloration and habits and, for the purpose of this study, no effort is made to distinguish the two.

The selection for certain inherited characteristics war practiced approximately 2000 years before the Christian Era. Jacob (Genesis 30:28-43) was given all the speckled cattle in his master’s herd for being herdsman. In a few years, by selecting for the spotting factor, only speckled cattle remained in the herd. Selection was the first tool for segregating definite characteristics. As a means of more rapid improvement artificial insemination was practiced by an Arabian chieftain as early as 1322 A. D. (35). This report summarizes the results of a study on the life cycle of a member of the trematode family Acanthooolpidae, genus Stephanostomum Looss, 1899, which was carried on during the summers of 1948, 1949, 1951, and the winter of 1948-49 at the Marine Station of the College or the Pacific at Dillon Beach, California. Only one previous experimental work has been done on the life cycle of any member of this family. Martin (1939) reported the life cycle of Stephanostomum tenue (Linton) which he had obtained at Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Modifications of his technical procedures have been used in this …

This study of the Norway rat, Rattus norvegicus (Erxleben) and its consortes was undertaken in Utah County to determine : (1} the frequency of infection of Trichinella spiralis (Owen) Railliet, the causative organism of trichinosis in humans, (2) the populations of fleas, lice and mites on the rat, and (3) the occurence of other consortes. This study covered a period from January 1951 through June, 1951. Additional records were made available from studies being made by the Department of Zoology and Entomology, Brigham Young University on parasitic arthropods (listed as Project Ten). During the period of October to April of the winter of 1950-51, an ecological study was undertaken of a population or passerine birds wintering in a segment of the Utah Lake Shore. Available winter weather data indicated that although such factors as precipitation, temperature, and wind may often be severe, they are not critical enough to prevent a fairly large population of passerine birds from spending the winter months in the study locale. The study of the Utah sculpin in Logan River was based on 801 specimens collected during 1949 to March 1951. Numbers of fish examined for various catagories of the study wares length-frequency, 495; aging by vertebrae, 407; length-weight relationship, 601; and food habits, 275.

Fish were collected by use of an electric shocking machine generating 600 watts and 220 volts. Numbers of fish occurred as high as 150 per tenth mile of stream. Preferred habitats occurred in areas of coarse gravel and small rocks.

Vertebrae dissected from the fish were used in age determination. Length-frequency proved to be a general …

The study of the Utah sculpin Cottus bairdi semiscaber, or Rocky Mountain bullhead as it is known locally on Logan River, Utah, is primarily one of determining its relation to game fish. Field work for this study began in 1949 and continued to March of 1951. Numbers of the Utah sculpin on Logan River have been estimated to be as high as 150 per tenth mile of stream. The larger populations are in the area of the third impoundment on Logan River and downstream.
