Murine Circadian Susceptibility-Resistance Cycle To Acetylcholine, Frank Jones, Erhard Haus, Franz Halberg Jan 1963

Murine Circadian Susceptibility-Resistance Cycle To Acetylcholine, Frank Jones, Erhard Haus, Franz Halberg

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The detection of a circadian ( about 24- hour) susceptibility-resistance cycle to acetylcholine by spot checks on mortality from this agent will be here presented. The study was done under conditions standardized to some extent for 24-hour routine-synchronized circadian system analysis ( 1). Sampling was limited to only two time points along the 24-hour scale. Hence, results represent a spot check rather than a circadian map. The conclusions to be drawn from these data have been confirmed, in the interim, with more frequent sampling. The data to be reported constitute further evidence that circadian system structure (2) involves significant and …

Rabbit Fumigation, C D. Gooding Jan 1963

Rabbit Fumigation, C D. Gooding

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Not all poisons act by absorption from the alimentary tract or through the skin, the fumigants are a big group of poisons used in pest control which act on the animal after being absorbed through the lungs.

FUMIGATION as it is now used in Western Australia is not always an economical way of treating whole farm properties. It should only be used on its own in areas where it is impossible to use other more permanent methods such as warren destruction.

Behavioral Isolating Mechanisms In The Family Anatidae, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 1963

Behavioral Isolating Mechanisms In The Family Anatidae, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

The ducks, geese, and swans present a host of species-recognition and isolating-mechanism problems that are equaled by few other groups of birds. As a family, the Anatidae have provided the greatest number of interspecific hybridization records of any avian family (see Gray, 1958, and Johnsgard, 1960a) both in captivity and under natural conditions. A surprising number of these hybrids have proved to be fertile, even when obtained between what appear to be well-marked genera. This remarkable capacity for hybridization indicates that isolating mechanisms must be operating effectively if species are to retain their integrity under natural conditions. Since genetic isolation …

Studies On Neogogatea Kentuckiensis (Cable, 1935) N. Comb. (Trematoda: Strigeoidea: Cyathocotylidae), Glenn L. Hoffman, Clarence E. Dunbar

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The cercaria of N. kentuckiensis was found in Anaplocamus dilatatus (Nitrocris d.) and Mudalia carinata. The metacercaria was found in all fishes examined from Opequon River, West Virginia, except Cottus bairdi which was also refractory to experimental infection. Two species of Centrarchidae, four of Cyprinidae, three of Salmonidae, Etheostoma flabellare, Platypoecilus maculatus, and Trichogaster trichopterus were experimentally infected. The development of the metacercari and cyst and effect on the fish are described. The histopathology initially consists of hemorrhage and muscle necrosis about the metacercaria, followed by reorganization and formation of a loose connective tissue cyst. The controversial adult names …

Index Catalogue To Russian, Central And Eastern European, And Chinese Literature In Medical Entomology, Volume 1: Diptera, George Anastes

United States Naval Medical Research Unit 3: Publications

Over the past several years a large number of references from the USSR, Eastern Europe, and China have been collected dealing with arthropods of medical importance. These references were coded on keysort cards which made it possible to index as many as fifteen subject areas on one card. The usefulness of this indexing system was evident by the number of medical entomologists who used it in searching for references in their specialty. In response to requests from workers in the United States and other countries who did not have ready access to the index. it was decided to publish these …

Factors Affecting The Waterfowl Hunter Utilization And The Waterfowl Kill At The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, 1960-61, Stephen V. Goddard May 1962

Factors Affecting The Waterfowl Hunter Utilization And The Waterfowl Kill At The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, 1960-61, Stephen V. Goddard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In 1960 there were 1,955, 000 waterfowl hunters in the United States. These hunters spent $89,431, 000 (an average of $45.74 per individual) and 15,158, 000 hunter days in the field. The hunting population will increase 35 percent by 1975 (Anonymous, 1960).

The large increase in hunters will bring a proportional increase in the demand for places to hunt. Many states face the problem of providing enough public hunting for such an army of sportsmen. Studies by Kozlik (1958) in California, Gordinier (1957) and Friley (1959) in Michigan, and Bednarik (1957, 1961) in Ohio point out some of the problems …

Influence Of Age On Milk Production Of Holstein Cows In Utah, Marvin R. Green May 1962

Influence Of Age On Milk Production Of Holstein Cows In Utah, Marvin R. Green

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Production of dairy cows is influenced by many factors, among which are: genetics, nutrition, management, disease and age. Most of these factors can be modified to maintain a high level of production. Age, however, is beyond the influence of mankind; therefore, it is important to understand the effect of age on milk and butter-fat production.

Food Habits Of The Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Jerry Maurer Jan 1962

Food Habits Of The Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Jerry Maurer

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

In his 1920 paper, L. H. Tiffany states that the gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) offers for the game fish one of the most direct routes possible from manufacturer to consumer. In view of this conclusion, the research reported in this paper was undertaken for the purpose of determining (a) what foods are ingested by gizzard shad, and (b) if there is any correlation between food ingested and that available in greatest supply in the natural habitat. The study was centered in an area of the Mississippi River in the vicinity of Winona, Minnesota. Some additional work was done about thirty-five …

Day-Old Fowl Pox Vaccination, P Smetana Jan 1962

Day-Old Fowl Pox Vaccination, P Smetana

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FOR many years the standard procedure for fowl pox prevention on West Australian poultry farms has been to vaccinate young stock at 12 weeks of age. Although most farmers have used this system successfully it has a number of weaknesses which can be overcome by day-old vaccination.

A new day-old fowl pox vaccine now on the market has many advantages over the normal vaccine, which is used at about 12 weeks old.

In tests at the Poultry Research Station it gave satisfactory results.

Grazing To Control Pasture Composition, R A. Bettenay Jan 1962

Grazing To Control Pasture Composition, R A. Bettenay

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

APART from grazing management, there are a number of means by which the farmer can influence pasture composition.

With the exception of grazing, all of these processes involve recurring costs, so it is important to exert the utmost possible control through the grazing animal.

Growth Study Of Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Gordon Willfahrt Jan 1962

Growth Study Of Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Gordon Willfahrt

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This investigation was part of a general study aimed at shedding light upon the role of the gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) as a forage fish of certain game fish species. Recent changes in the populations of such game fish species as the walleye ( Stizastedion vitreum), northern pike ( Esox lucius) , and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) in the upper Mississippi River suggest that the gizzard shad population might have an important bearing on the present situation. The purpose of this investigation was to study the growth rates of the gizzard shad in the Upper Mississippi River during their first …

Studies On Parorchis Acanthus (Trematoda: Digenea) As A Biological Control For The Southern Oyster Drill, Thais Haemastoma, Nelson R. Cooley

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Events in the attack on the southern oyster drill, Thais haemastoma, by miracidia of the digenetic trematode, Parorchis acanthus, are described.

Infection rates in wild drill populations of various Gulf Coast localities from Florida to Texas were low, but intensity of infection in individual drills was high and caused castration. Infection rates in laboratory experiments were high, but intensities were low.

Pathology of natural infections in drills is described. The infection lasts at least two years, possibly even for life.

Natural infection rates of juvenile herring gulls (Larus argentatus) , ring-billed gulls (L. delawarensis), and …

Redescription Of The Adult Water Mite Hydrachna Miliaria And Description Of Its Life History, David Lou Kass Jan 1962

Redescription Of The Adult Water Mite Hydrachna Miliaria And Description Of Its Life History, David Lou Kass

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the summer of 1957 the writer became interested in water mites while collecting insects in an unnamed pond (see map in appendix) near Tomales, California. It was noted during that period that specimens of a giant water-bug, Lethocerus americanus Leidy (1847) had many larval mites attached to their ventral sides, and the lack of information concerning these animals and their life histories stimulated interest in investigating the problem detailed in this thesis. This work was begun in the summer of 1957 and has continued through the summer of 1959 and 1960.

Due to the lack of information and lack …
