The council notes with regret the passing of Dr. Ralph Vanderwort Bangham who died at his home in Wooster, Ohio, on 26 February 1966 at the age of 71. Dr. Bangham was one of the pioneers in the field of fish parasitology in the United States.

Digenetic Trematodes From Embiotocid Fishes Of Tomales And Bodega Bays, California, Thomas David Rodella

The present paper deals solely with parasites of marine fishes of the family Enbiotocidae represented in the American Pacific according to Special Publications no. 2, American Fisheries Society, 1960, by 20 species, all of which are marine except the Tule perch, Hysterocarpus traski (Gibbons) from fresh water. In Tomales and Bodega Bays 174 fishes representing 9 embiotocid species were examined and found to harbor 6 species of digenetic trem todes, including one here in described as new.

Seasonal Gonadal Changes Of Adult Oviparous Oysters In Tomales Bay, Carl John Berg

Two species of oviparous oysters, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1790), the Eastern oyster, and Crassostrea gigas (Thunbert, 1793), the Japanese oyster, were introduced into Tomales Bay, California, for commercial purposes. Because these oysters do not propagate in Tomales Bay, new shipments of adult oysters or oyster spat must be periodically sent from the east coast of the United States or from Japan. It is the purpose of this study to compare the seasonal gonadal changes which occur in the two species of adult oysters in Tomales Bay with one another, and to compare them with the seasonal gonadal changes which occur …

From July 6 to 11, 1966, vertebrates were collected on Volcan de Fuego, Jalisco, for the Museum of Natural History,the University of Kansas, by Hugh H. Genoways and Percy L. Clifton. On July 10, a shrew of the genus Cryptotis was obtained on a steep slope across the valley to the north of the active cone of the volcano. The specimen was caught in a steel trap placed in the tunnel of a pocket gopher; because the opening had not been covered after the trap was set, it could not be determined whether the shrew was using the tunnel as …

Excepting the generalized accounts of Over and Churchill (1945), no attempt has been made previously to summarize the distribution of bats in South Dakota. In 1960, 1961, and again in 1965, field parties from the Museum of Natural History of The University of Kansas collected mammals in that state. Bats obtained by these parties, together with those on deposit in other institutions and the few specimens earlier reported from South Dakota by other workers (see cited literature), form the basis of the present report. Eleven species are here treated; two of these are represented in the state by two subspecies. …

Hematological Variation Associated With Altitude, Season, Sexual Activity And Body In The Uinta Ground Squirrel, Ralph Theodore Kinchloe

Hematological comparisons were made on the Uinta ground squirrel (Citellus armatus) trapped at different altitudes and during vari ou s stages of seasonal activity in 1965 and 1966. Hematological variation due to sex, sexual activity and body weight were also analyzed. Ground squirrels were secured from the Mt. Timpanogos area near Provo, Utah County, Utah. Erythrocyte count, hematocrit, total blood hemoglobin, mean erythrocyte volume, mean erythrocyte hemoglobin and reticulocyte counts were measured using standard procedures; banding patterns of hemoglobin and serum proteins wer e determined by means of electrophoresis with polyacetate strips.

An Electrophoretic And Chromatographic Study Of The Hemoglobin From Adult And Fetal Pigs, Donald William Green

Hemoglobin, from the erythrocytes of adult and fetal pigs, was isolated and analyzed by carboxymethylcellulose column chromatography and electrophoresis on polyacetate. These techniques demonstrate the existence of four fetal components (F0, F1A, F1B, F1C) and two adult components (A0, A1) based on their elution pH values and electrophoretic mobilities. The shift from-fetal to adult forms is initiated sometime between eight weeks after birth and one year. The change is not completed until sometime after one year and the major fetal forms (F0, F1A) maintain a 15% level in a mature adult. This report is in contrast with the results of …

Due to a lack of taxonomic and distributional information concerning the Common Crow Corvus brachryhynchos Brehm inhabiting the Great Basin of North America, Johnston (1961) in one of the most recent revisions on crows, was unable to include this area in his work. Between 1965 and 1967, field trips were taken throughout the Great Basin to secure specims, and to determine to what extent the area was being utilized by crows. Ecological information such as habitat prference, nesting behavior, and interactions with other species was collected where possible. Forty-eight birds were collected from the Great Basin. Observations and collections on the breeding biology and life history of Rana pretiosa pretiosa Baird and Girard have been made in central Utah from 1962 to 1967. The frogs' activities were followed from their spring emergence untril the tadpoles metamorphosed and hibernated in the fall. Collections and observations were made at regular intervals through the entire period of summer activity. Data were gathered at the ponds and samples of the life history stages were taken to the laboratory where they were analyzed and studied. Emergence is normally during the middle of March. An Examination Of A Putative System For The In Vitro Synthesis Of Drosophila Tryptophan Pyrrolase, John P. Phillips

A system, reported by Morrison (1964), for the in vitro synthesis of Drosophila tryptophan pyrrolase has been critically studied. This putative system is based on the addition of a Drosophila "RNA" extract to a Drosophila cell-free protein synthesizing system; the synthesized enzyme is then allowed to catalyze a specific reaction, the product of which is measured by direct adsorption.

The results of this study present a three-fold argument against the interpretation of synthesis of tryptophan pyrrolase in the Morrison in vitro system: (1) RNA from a null-allele, v^36f, stimulated the same tryptophan pyrrolase "activity" in the in vitro …

A Study Of The Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel (Citellus Lateralis) In A Sagebrush-Grass Community, Dennis E. Peterson

Golden-mantled ground squirrels (Citellus lateralis Say) typically inhabit coniferous forest regions, but they occasionally occur in desert shrub habitats. The principal purpose of this study was to observe activities of mantled squirrels in a sagebrush community, and to ascertain factors which contribute to their success in an unusually arid habitat. Squirrels of this community belong to the subspecies C. l. lateralis; however, intergradation between typical C. l. lateralis and C. l. castanurus is evident. This community is in the Wasatch Mountains at an elevation of 5,750 feet, and in the Upper Sonoran Zone. These three conditions were not previously recorded …
