Miscellaneous Publication 42/93 - Development And Dissemination Of Design Methods For Rangeland Paddocks Which Maximise Animal Production And Minimise Land Degradation, Shane Cridland, Mark Stafford Smith

Animal production and livestock published reports

Surveys of rangeland resources in Western Australia to date have shown that 23% of the area surveyed is in poor range condition. Poor condition is characterised by the loss of perennial vegetation allowing wind and water erosion. Approximately another 37% is in only fair range condition (Curry and Hacker 1990).

The loss of range condition is partly due to uneven use of paddocks by sheep and cattle. The areas close to water and the preferred pasture types are often over-utilised, while areas well away from water and less preferred pasture types are under-utilised. The result is that rangeland in good, …

Review Of Recreational Gill, Haul And Cast Netting In Western Australia., F. B. Prokop Oct 1993

Review Of Recreational Gill, Haul And Cast Netting In Western Australia., F. B. Prokop

Fisheries Management Papers

In this paper the Recreational Netting Committee has addressed an extremely complex and controversial issue in a forthright manner. They have developed a set of management proposals which accommodates recreational netting while recognizing the concerns of non-netters and the general community. The Committee would like to stress that it considers this plan as a package. For example the Committee would be strongly opposed to the considerable operational restrictions contained under Section 5 if there were not a trade-off in terms of a fairer criteria for which estuaries are open as proposed in Section 6.2. Similarly, the Committee would not be …

Management Arrangements For The Southern Demersal Gillnet And Demersal Longline Fishery 1994/95 Season., Southern Demersal Gillnet And Demersal Longline Management Advisory Committee

Fisheries Management Papers

At its meeting of 7 April 1993 the Southern Demersal Gillnet and Demersal Longline Fishery Management Advisory Committee (hereafter called "the Committee) was advised of the Western Australian Fisheries Department's Research Division's concern over the status of shark stocks. All the data available indicate that whiskery sharks are severely over-exploited with stock levels declining by around 10% to 30% of original levels. Current levels of fishing effort are expected to cause the stock to decline further. Gummy sharks have high risk of over exploitation (stock has declined to 40% -50% of original levels. Dusty whaler stocks (bronze whaler) is uncertain …

Description, Distribution, And Abundance Of The Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus (Rathbun), Spawning Stock Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Patrick John Geer Oct 1993

Description, Distribution, And Abundance Of The Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus (Rathbun), Spawning Stock Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Patrick John Geer

OES Theses and Dissertations

The lower Chesapeake Bay spawning stock of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, (Rathbun), is examined for seven years (1986 - 1992) in an attempt to better understand stock behavior. Three methods of post-stratification are used to describe the distribution and movement of the population over time. The three methods, density strata, geographic zones, and depth strata, did well in explaining movements of the population, indicating a trend of increased concentration of blue crabs near the eastern Bay late in the spawning season - October. The data suggest a bimodal period of spawning and a trimodal period of abundance. The …

Preface To Biology Of The Heteromyidae, Hugh H. Genoways, James H. Brown Aug 1993

Preface To Biology Of The Heteromyidae, Hugh H. Genoways, James H. Brown

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

What is the family Heteromyidae? It is the group ofexclusively New World rodents that includes the kangaroo rats, pocket mice, and kangaroo mice ofthe desert, grasslands, and shrublands of western North America as well as the spiny and pouched rats of the subtropical shrublands and tropical deciduous and evergreen forests of North America, Central America, and northernmost South America. It is a large family, with six genera and 316 species.

"Taxonomy" From Biology Of The Heteroeromyidae, Daniel F. Williams, Hugh H. Genoways, Janet K. Braun

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Herein the taxonomy of the family is reviewed and diagnoses of Recent species and accounts of all currently recognized Recent species and subspecies are provided. The objective is to present a current taxonomy for the family rather than a systematic review. Unfortunately, there have been no comprehensive reviews for most genera for 80 years or more and the current taxonomy of many species clearly is unsatisfactory, as is the understanding of the relationships between most of the described fossil and Recent taxa.

Age, Growth, And Mortality Of Atlantic Croaker, Micropogonias Undulatus, In The Chesapeake Bay Region, With A Discussion Of Apparent Geographic Changes In Population Dynamics, Luiz R. Barbieri, Mark E. Chittenden Jr., Cynthia M. Jones Aug 1993

Jones

OES Faculty Publications

Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus, collected from commercial catches in Chesapeake Bay and in Virginia and North Carolina coastal waters during 1988-1991 (n=1,967) were aged from transverse otolith sections. Ages 1-8 were recorded, but eight-year-old fish were rare. Marginal increment analysis showed that for ages 1-7, annuli are formed once a year during the period April-May. Otolith age readings were precise: >99% agreement within and between readers. Observed lengths-at-age were highly variable and growth rate decreased after the first year. Despite the high variability in sizes-at-age, observed lengths for ages 1-7 fit the von Bertalanffy growth model (r2=0.99; n=753) well. …

Management Proposals For 1993/94 And 1994/95 Western Rock Lobster Season., Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee

Fisheries Management Papers

The Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee (RLIAC) in reviewing management arrangements for the rock lobster fishery, were concerned with two principle objectives: 1. That the management measures adopted would arrest the ongoing decline in breeding stock and seek to re-establish the number of breeding female rock lobster to levels consistent with known historic safe levels in the fishery. 2. That the management arrangements adopted would properly take into account market requirements in order to maximise returns to fishermen from an appropriate level of catch.

Pheromonal Composition Of Two Species Of African Amblyomma Ticks: Similarities, Differences And Possible Species Specific Components, Thomas Lem Price Jr. Jul 1993

Pheromonal Composition Of Two Species Of African Amblyomma Ticks: Similarities, Differences And Possible Species Specific Components, Thomas Lem Price Jr.

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Two species of bont ticks, Amblyomma hebraeum and Amblyomma variegatum, common to Africa have been studied to compare types and quantities of compounds known or believed to serve as components of the attraction-aggregation-attachment pheromone (AAAP). A complex of attraction, aggregation and attachment pheromones are used by these ticks to detect hosts, mates and perhaps minimize interspecific breeding. Solvent extraction of pheromone emitting ticks followed by Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry revealed little difference in the composition of the AAAP in these two species. However, subtle differences in the relative makeup of the pheromonal blend are noted, suggesting that such differences …

The Effect Of 6-Methoxybenzoxazolinone On Reproductive Condition In The Hispid Cotton Rat, Sigmodon Hispidus, Vera Lee Adams Jul 1993

The Effect Of 6-Methoxybenzoxazolinone On Reproductive Condition In The Hispid Cotton Rat, Sigmodon Hispidus, Vera Lee Adams

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

A non-estrogenic hormone, 6-methoxybenzoxazolinone (6-MBOA), found in young growing grasses, has been shown to be a reproductive initiator in several herbivorous rodents. However, the mechanism by which 6-MBOA initiates reproduction has not been determined. Many believe that 6-MBOA represents a reliable cue that the vegetative growing season has begun, but it is unknown whether this hormone is a primary cueing mechanism or if it works in conjunction with other environmental factors. Therefore, a controlled laboratory experiment was conducted using male and female Sigmodon hispidus, the hispid cotton rat, to determine whether different dosages of 6-MBOA (4μg, 40 …

Age And Growth Of Larval And Juvenile Atlantic Croaker, Micropogonias Undulatus, From The Middle Atlantic Bight And Estuarine Waters Of Virginia, Stephen W. Nixon Jul 1993

Age And Growth Of Larval And Juvenile Atlantic Croaker, Micropogonias Undulatus, From The Middle Atlantic Bight And Estuarine Waters Of Virginia, Stephen W. Nixon

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Sagittal otoliths were used to determine the age and growth of 605 larval and juvenile Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus, collected in the Middle Atlantic Bight (MAB) and estuarine waters of Virginia. A Laird-Gompertz model (r2 = 0.95) was used to describe the growth of croaker up to 65 mm standard length (SL) and 142 days (t): S1(t) = 2.657 Exp {4.656 [1-Exp (-0.008lt)]}; SL(t) = standard length at day t. Generally, croaker collected inshore were larger and older than those collected offshore, indicating estuarine immigration from offshore spawning grounds. Back-calculated hatch-dates indicated spawning over an 8- month period …

Evaluation Of The Gross Anatomy Seasonal Changes Function And Histology Of The Perineal Gland In The Hispid Cotton Rat, Sigmodon Hispidus, Julie Anne Winchell Jul 1993

Evaluation Of The Gross Anatomy Seasonal Changes Function And Histology Of The Perineal Gland In The Hispid Cotton Rat, Sigmodon Hispidus, Julie Anne Winchell

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The perinea! gland in the hispid cotton rat, Sigmodon hispidus, is a seasonally cyclic, subcutaneously located organ which is associated with the reproductive system. On gross dissection, the gland possesses a strong attachment to the penis with only loose fascia! connections to the rectum and surrounding muscle and skin. Histologic exam confirms this connection to the reproductive tract and shows the organ to be a compound tubuloacinar gland with a projection leading into the penis. The cyclic hypertrophy and regression of the gland closely parallels that of the testes and seminal vesicles indicating that this cyclicity may be under …

Estimation Of The Parameters Involved In A First-Order Autoregressive Process For Contemporary Groups, K. M. Wade, R. L. Quaas, L. Dale Van Vleck Jun 1993

Estimation Of The Parameters Involved In A First-Order Autoregressive Process For Contemporary Groups, K. M. Wade, R. L. Quaas, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A methodology was developed for estimating the parameters involved in a first-order autoregressive process; these parameters comprise a variance component associated with the random effect, a correlation coefficient, p, and a residual variance. These parameters were estimated using REML with an expectation maximization algorithm. For two single trait analyses (milk and fat production being the dependent variable), the example chosen for the analyses was year-month -- treated as random and following a first-order autoregressive process within fixed herd. Initially, estimates failed to converge, possibly because of a time trend in the data, which was not accounted for by the model. …

On The Relative Importance Of Floral Color, Shape, And Nectar Rewards In Attracting Pollinators To Mimulus, Steven D. Sutherland, Robert K. Vickery Jr. Jun 1993

On The Relative Importance Of Floral Color, Shape, And Nectar Rewards In Attracting Pollinators To Mimulus, Steven D. Sutherland, Robert K. Vickery Jr.

Great Basin Naturalist

Pollinator preferences were observed for the six species of section Erythranthe of the genus Mimulus using greenhouse-grown plants placed in a meadow in the Red Butte Canyon Natural Area, Salt Lake County, Utah. The principal pollinators were hummingbirds and bumble bees. Hummingbirds preferred the species with the most reflexed tubular flowers regardless of color, whereas bumblebees preferred pink. lavender, or yellow flowers to red flowers regardless of shape. Results for the six species were confirmed by observations of F2 hybrid recombinant plants selected such that flower color could be held constant and flower shape varied and vice versa.

Fisheries Research Report No.100 - The Impact Of Trawling For Saucer Scallops And Western King Prawns On The Benthic Communities In Coastal Waters Off South-Western Australia, L. J.B. Laurenson, P. Unsworth, J. W. Penn, R. C.J. Lenanton Jun 1993

Fisheries Research Report No.100 - The Impact Of Trawling For Saucer Scallops And Western King Prawns On The Benthic Communities In Coastal Waters Off South-Western Australia, L. J.B. Laurenson, P. Unsworth, J. W. Penn, R. C.J. Lenanton

Fisheries Research Reports

A two year study was undertaken to collect data for the assessment of the impact of the saucer scallop and western king prawn trawl fisheries on the benthic communities in coastal waters off south western Australia, between 31°20'5 and 34°23'5 latitude.

Monitoring of reported commercial landings, on-board sampling of commercial catches, research vessel trawl surveys, experimental and exploratory trawling, and underwater television observations, have enabled the development of an extensive data-base on the fishery and benthic communities of the region.

These data indicate that the existing fishery operates on a number of relatively small, discrete grounds where saucer scallops or …

Modelling Avian Distributions Of The Navarrese Region In Northern Spain With A Geographic Information System, Samuel Soret-Garcia Jun 1993

Modelling Avian Distributions Of The Navarrese Region In Northern Spain With A Geographic Information System, Samuel Soret-Garcia

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

GIS (Geographic information Systems) technology was used for identifying relations between environmental characteristics and the breeding distributions of nine avian species of the Navarrese region in northern Spain. Data overlays of multiple GIS layers derived the explanatory variables for modelling the breeding distributions from logistic regressions. A spatial autocorrelation analysis was conducted to characterize the distribution patterns and to incorporate spatial factors (neighborhood effects) into their analysis.

All nine patterns analyzed exhibited a high level of spatial autocorrelation. Accordingly, the basic hypothesis of spatial randomness was rejected in favor of spatial clustering for the sample data. The breeding distributions strongly …
