Foraging-Related Activity Of Bald Eagles At A Washington Seabird Colony And Seal Rookery, James L. Hayward, Joseph G. Galusha, Shandelle M. Henson
Faculty Publications
From 1980 to 1998, Washington's Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) population increased at an annual rate of 10. Over the same time period, foraging activity of Bald Eagles at marine bird breeding colonies also increased. From 1993 to 2008, we observed foraging-related behavior of Bald Eagles on Violet Point, Protection Island. This island hosts more than 70 of the breeding seabirds in Washington's inner seaways and serves as an important rookery for harbor seals (Phoca vitulina). We found that (1) eagles landed more frequently in seal haul-out (beach) areas than in gull-nesting (non-beach) areas of Violet Point, and that subadult eagles …

Biogeography Of The American Pika (Ochotona Princeps) In Oregon And Southern Washington: Illuminating Genetic Relationships Among Disjunct Populations, George Washington Batten Iii
Dissertations and Theses
The American pika (Ochotona princeps) finds moderately warm temperatures (>25°C) lethally stressful, and at the end of the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago was forced to disperse to cooler, "sky island" mountaintops where they are almost exclusively found today. Thirty six subspecies are recognized, all established using morphological characters, and it is uncertain whether these subspecies' designations are corroborated by genetic analyses. This study elucidates three hypotheses regarding populations in Oregon and southern Washington: 1) O. p. fumosa constitutes a subspecies distinct form O. p. brunnescens, 2) the Columbia River constitutes a barrier to gene …

Age, Growth And Maturation Of Swordtip Squid (Photololigo Edulis) In The Southern East China Sea, Kae-Yih Wang, Kuo-Tien Lee, Cheng-Hsin Liao
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The reproductive biology, and age and growth of the swordtip squid (Photololigo edulis) in the East China Sea were examined based on the growth ring of statoliths from 1797 specimens during the period of November 2002 to November 2004. The maximum age observed was 261 days in female and 253 days in male, an evidence showing that swordtip squid has a longevity of about 9 months in both sexes. Growth in mantle length (ML) and body weight (BW) in both sexes was best described by the exponential model. There was significantly difference in somatic or statolith growth between the sexes. …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is a highly pathogenic and prevalent virus affecting shrimp culture worldwide including Taiwan. In the present study, the viral envelope protein, VP28, gene of the WSSV was cloned into a pET28a expression vector. VP28 was expressed as a protein with a 6-histidine tag in Escherichia coli and purified by a Ni-NTA column. Antiserum was raised against this recombinant VP28 protein in BALB/C mice, and it recognized the VP28 protein in purified virions and recombinant proteins. The antiserum was mixed with arginine (100 ppm), lysine (168 ppm), and phenylalanine (88 ppm), and the titer of the …

Antioxidant And Immune-Stimulating Activities Of Hot-Water Extract From Seaweed Sargassum Hemiphyllum, Pai-An Hwang, Chwen-Herng Wu, Shu-Yun Gau, Shih-Yung Chien, Deng-Fwu Hwang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The hot-water extract of seaweed Sargassum hemiphyllum was evaluated antioxidant activity by using four different methods, including DPPH free radicals scavenging activity, Fe+2 chelating activity, superoxide anion radical scavenging activity and reducing power, and the immune-stimulating activity by using HB4C5 cells and J774.1 cells. It was found that the antioxidant activity was increasing in correlating with the concentration below 3.5 mg/ml. The HB4C5 cells showed the maximum relative activities of cell proliferation (174%) and IgM secretion (132%) at 120 µg/ml of hot-water extract. Overheating slightly reduced the immune-stimulating activity of hot-water extract. At 80 µg/ml, J774.1 cells showed the maximum …

There are only a few published examinations of elephant visual acuity. All involved Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) and found visual acuity to be between 8′ and 11′ of arc for a stimulus near the tip of the trunk, equivalent to a 0.50 cm gap, at a distance of about 2 m from the eyes. We predicted that African elephants (Loxodonta africana) would have similarly high visual acuity, necessary to facilitate eye-trunk coordination for feeding, drinking and social interactions. When tested on a discrimination task using Landolt-C stimuli, one African elephant cow demonstrated a visual acuity of …
Trait Selection And Welfare Of Genetically Engineered Animals In Agriculture, Michael Greger
Trait Selection And Welfare Of Genetically Engineered Animals In Agriculture, Michael Greger
Genetics Collection
The release of the Final Guidance from the US Food and Drug Administration on the commercialization of genetically engineered animals has sparked renewed discussion over the ethical, consumer, and regulatory implications of transgenesis in animal agriculture. Animal welfare critiques have focused on unexpected phenotypic effects in animals used in transgenic research, rather than on the health and welfare implications of the intended productivity enhancement. Unless breeding goals are redefined to reflect social concerns, the occurrence and magnitude of undesirable side effects may increase and consumer confidence in the nascent technology may be undermined.
The Efficacy Of Sanctuary Areas For The Management Of Fish Stocks And Biodiversity In Wa Waters, James W. Penn, Warrick J. Fletcher
The Efficacy Of Sanctuary Areas For The Management Of Fish Stocks And Biodiversity In Wa Waters, James W. Penn, Warrick J. Fletcher
Fisheries Research Reports
Debate concerning the relative benefits of marine protected areas (MPAs) for the management of marine resources can often reflect unrecognized differences in the scope, scale and definitions of the objectives being sought by various Government or community bodies. There can also be different opinions on the level of protection required for an area to be considered an ‘MPA’ and functional definitions for both the biological diversity and ecosystems within these areas are often lacking. This paper seeks to outline the relative efficiency and effectiveness of MPAs, especially no-take sanctuary areas, compared to other strategies currently employed to help achieve the …

Revised Relative Abundance Estimates And Temporal Activity Of Bats At Three Great Lakes National Parks Based On Acoustic Data, Bruce W. Miller
Revised Relative Abundance Estimates And Temporal Activity Of Bats At Three Great Lakes National Parks Based On Acoustic Data, Bruce W. Miller
United States National Park Service: Publications
Abstract
In this study, Miller re-analyzed acoustic bat data collected from June-August 2003 that was part of a baseline inventory of bat species in three national parks in the Lake Superior region. While the original study presented base-line data on the presence/absence of bat species in these parks, this reanalysis provides estimates of relative abundance and temporal activity of the identified species. Using a suite of recently developed acoustic analysis tools, Miller created species specific filters. This allowed parsing of calls from non-fragmented sequences and differentiate between two species, Myotis septentrionalis and Myotis lucifugus, that were combined into a …
The Presence Of Micropterus Salmoides (Largemouth Bass) Influences The Populations Of Rana Draytonii (California Red-Legged Frog) And Pseudacris Regilla (Pacific Treefrog) In Two Ponds In Santa Barbara County, California, Kenneth Lee Gilliland
Master's Theses
Alien fish have been implicated in the decline of Rana draytonii (California red-legged frog) and Pseudacris regilla (Pacific treefrog) populations. Micropterus salmoides (largemouth bass) is a common sport fish that has been introduced into the sympatric range of these two anuran species; however, no studies have investigated the individual influence that this alien fish has on these two species. I conducted M. salmoides control or eradication experiments during a four year study in two ponds within the Transverse Mountain Range of Santa Barbara County, California. Changes in the densities of all life stages of R. draytonii and P. regilla were …

Relatively few evaluations of aquatic macroinvertebrate and fish communities have been published in peer-reviewed literature detailing the effect of varying residual basal area (RBA) after timber harvesting in riparian buffers. Our analysis investigated the effects of partial harvesting within riparian buffers on aquatic macroinvertebrate and fish communities in small streams from two experiments in northern Minnesota northern hardwood-aspen forests. Each experiment evaluated partial harvesting within riparian buffers. In both experiments, benthic macroinvertebrates and fish were collected 1 year prior to harvest and in each of 3 years after harvest. We observed interannual variation for the macroinvertebrate abundance, diversity and taxon …

Bilateral Multi-Electrode Neurophysiological Recordings Coupled To Local Pharmacology In Awake Songbirds, Liisa A. Tremere, Thomas A. Terleph, Jin Kwon Jeong, Raphael Pinaud
Biology Faculty Publications
Here we describe a protocol for bilateral multielectrode neurophysiological recordings during intracerebral pharmacological manipulations in awake songbirds. This protocol encompasses fitting adult animals with head-posts and recording chambers, and acclimating them to periods of restraint. The adaptation period is followed by bilateral penetrations of multiple electrodes to obtain acute, sensory-driven neurophysiological responses before versus during the application of pharmacological agents of interest. These local manipulations are achieved by simultaneous and restricted drug infusions carried out independently for each hemisphere. We have used this protocol to elucidate how neurotransmitter and neuroendocrine systems shape the auditory and perceptual processing of natural, learned …

Biology Faculty Publications
The usage of the name Rana ocellata Linnaeus, 1758, is plagued by misidentifications and misinterpretations. After an exhaustive bibliographic review, we conclude that the Linnaeus 1758 name refers to Osteopilus brunneus (Gosse, 1851) from Jamaica, while the taxon currently known as Leptodactylus ocellatus corresponds to Rana latrans Steffen, 1815. Herein, we designate and provide descriptions of the neotypes of Leptodactylus latrans (Steffen, 1815), revalidated, new combination, and Osteopilus ocellatus (Linnaeus, 1758), new combination, as a senior synonym of Osteopilus brunneus (Gosse, 1851).

The Presence Of Growth Hormone Secretagogue Receptor (Ghrelin Receptor) In Metabolic Tissues Of Beef Cattle With Differences In Composition Of Gain, J.S. Jennings, J.A. Clapper, A.D. Weaver, A.E. Wertz-Lutz
South Dakota Beef Report, 2010
Beef steers (n = 72) of similar age, weight (651 ± 3.1 lb), and genetic (Angus crossbred) background were used to determine the effects of growing diet composition (high‐forage vs. high‐concentrate) on the abundance of growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS‐R or ghrelin receptor) in metabolically important tissues of beef cattle. At trial initiation (d 0), 8 steers were harvested for initial carcass composition. The remaining 64 steers were allotted, by weight, to pen and treatment was assigned randomly. Treatments were 1) a high‐forage diet fed during the growing period (116 d) followed by a high‐concentrate diet during the finishing period …

Wintering Area Dde Source To Migratory White-Faced Ibis Revealed By Satellite Telemetry And Prey Sampling, Michael A. Yates, Mark R. Fuller, Charles J. Henny, William S. Seegar, Jaqueline Garcia
Raptor Research Center Publications and Presentations
Locations of contaminant exposure for nesting migratory species are difficult to fully understand because of possible additional sources encountered during migration or on the wintering grounds. A portion of the migratory white-faced ibis (Plegadis chihi) nesting at Carson Lake, Nevada continues to be exposed to dichloro-diphenyl-dichloroethylene (DDE) with no change, which is unusual, observed in egg concentrations between 1985 and 2000. About 45 to 63% of the earliest nesting segment shows reduced reproductive success correlated with elevated egg concentrations of > 4 µg/g wet weight (ww). Local prey (primarily earthworms) near nests contained little DDE so we tracked the migration and …

Preliminary Phylogeny Of The Thrips Parasitoids Of Turkey Based On Some Morphological Scales And 28s D2 Rdna, With Description Of A New Species, Oguzhan Doğanlar, Mi̇kdat Doğanlar, Anne Frary
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Species of the Ceranisus thrips-attacking genus are difficult to distinguish morphologically. The phylogenetic relationships within the Ceranisus species were explored using nucleotide sequences of the 28S D2 expansion region of the rDNA gene. Bayesian, maximum likelihood, and parsimony inference methods were employed to construct the phylogenetic relationships. Principal component analysis on the Turkish species of Ceranisus, namely antalyacus, menes, bozovaensis, hirsutus, planitianus (a new record for Turkey), pacuvius, and a new species, provided supporting evidence. All known data concerning hosts and geographical distribution are presented. A new species, C. onuri O. Doganlar, sp.n., was described from Turkey.
