Effects Of Free Methionine And Lysine On In Vitro Fermentation And In Vivo Performance And Ruminal Fermentation Of Late Lactation Holstein Cows, Yi-Hua Chung
LSU Master's Theses
Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of free Met and Lys supplementation on ruminal fermentation in vitro and in vivo. In the in vitro study, supplementation of Met and Lys had effects on concentrations of total VFA and NH4+, proportions of acetate, propionate, butyrate, isovalerate, valerate, and the ratio of acetate to propionate. Percentages of microbial N synthesis in effluent pellets were not affected by supplementing Lys and Met. The combination of 0.52% Met and 1.03% (90% DM) Lys resulted in the highest concentration of total VFA, second highest concentration of NH4+, …

Comparison Of Two Heifer Development Systems On A Commercial Nebraska Ranch, Tim Loy, Don C. Adams, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Dillon Feuz, Jacqueline A. Musgrave, Burke Teichert
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A trial was conducted at a commercial Nebraska ranch to evaluate the effectiveness of a bred heifer development program that minimized the use of harvested feed. Two management systems were imposed on 505 March-calving bred heifers during the winter before the calving season, one including the use of hay (CON), and one relying solely on winter range and supplementation (TRT). During the winter period, heifers in the TRT system lost less condition and had similar weight gains to CON. Two-year-old pregnancy rates did not differ between systems. A partial budget analysis of the two development programs indicated that the TRT …
Use Of Urine Ph To Predict Incidence Of Ketosis In Transition Dairy Cows, Amy Elizabeth Beem
Use Of Urine Ph To Predict Incidence Of Ketosis In Transition Dairy Cows, Amy Elizabeth Beem
LSU Master's Theses
Forty-one (10 primiparous and 31 multiparous) Holstein cows were used in an experiment to determine the effects of prepartum dietary energy (PDE) and supplemental Ca-propionate on the incidence of ketosis in transition dairy cows and to evaluate the usefulness of urine pH as a predictor for ketosis. Treatment factors were prepartum dietary energy concentration (normal vs. high) with or without 113.5g Ca-Propionate/day (Nutro Cal®, Kemin Industries, Inc., Des Moines, IA). All cows were fed the same basal diet postpartum. Ca-propionate supplementation continued postpartum. Cows were individually fed and dry matter intakes (DMI) were measured daily. Milk production was measured and …
Characteristics Of Fat Free Yogurt As Influenced By The Incorporation Of Folic Acid, Charles August Boeneke
Characteristics Of Fat Free Yogurt As Influenced By The Incorporation Of Folic Acid, Charles August Boeneke
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Folic acid fortification is used in the prevention of neural tube defects such as spina bifida and ancencephaly, heart defects, facial clefts, urinary tract abnormalities, and limb deficiencies. Although yogurt is not a good source of folic acid, fortification could aid in prevention of above mentioned defects. Fortification of yogurt with folic acid may or may not change its physico-chemical characteristics. Fat free sugar free yogurt was manufactured using 0, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the recommended daily allowance of 400 micrograms of folic acid. Treatments included addition of folic acid at these levels before and after pasteurization. Lemon …

Oocyte Production In The Early Postpartum Cow, Oscar Perez
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The postpartum period has been the focus of numerous studies; however, there is no information available relating to oocyte production in early postpartum cows. Ovaries of early postpartum cows were stimulated with FSH to produce follicular development and oocytes. The objectives of these studies were: (1) to evaluate the use of FSH for oocyte production in early postpartum beef cows, (2) to evaluate follicular response and oocyte quality of beef cows treated with FSH shortly after calving, (3) to evaluate FSH for oocyte production in early postpartum dairy cows, (4) to evaluate responses of FSH-treated, early postpartum beef cows in …
Proportional Assessment Of X And Y Chromosome-Bearing Spermatozoa In Bull And Boar Ejaculates Using Conventional And Real-Time Pcr Techniques, Julius Braden Paul
Proportional Assessment Of X And Y Chromosome-Bearing Spermatozoa In Bull And Boar Ejaculates Using Conventional And Real-Time Pcr Techniques, Julius Braden Paul
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Considerable variation in the percentage of Y-chromosome bearing spermatozoa (%Y-CBS) between ejaculates in the same male has been reported. Collection regime has been speculated to influence the degree of variation in %Y-CBS in bull ejaculates (Chandler et al., 1998). Experiments were designed to evaluate the effects of two collection regimes on %Y-CBS. Conventional PCR combined with gel electrophoresis and image analysis was employed to determine %Y-CBS in ejaculates from two bulls collected on 7-day intervals and two bulls on 21-day intervals. Real-time PCR technology was used to quantify %Y-CBS in the same ejaculates. Boar ejaculates were also analyzed with both …
Determination Of The Botanical And Chemical Composition Of The Pasture Diet Selected By Llamas (Lama Glama) During The Rainy Season In The Community Of Pujrata, Cristóbal Achu Nina
Determination Of The Botanical And Chemical Composition Of The Pasture Diet Selected By Llamas (Lama Glama) During The Rainy Season In The Community Of Pujrata, Cristóbal Achu Nina
Theses and Dissertations
Llamas (Lama glama) take advantage of poor natural forage (grasses and others) due to their efficient digestive physiology that is adapted for this type of forage. The problem now faced is the gradual exhaustion of the native grassland (low phytomass production). The vegetation does not cover the dry matter consumption requirements, and less so the nutrient requirements, of these animals. Because of this there is the necessity of determining the botanical composition, pasture selection by plant parts, and chemical composition of what llamas ingest in order to improve these animals' nutrition in the pasture. This study occurred at the Larqa …

In Situ Degradability Of Native Pastures In Llamas (Lama Glama) In The Rainy Season In The Community Of Pujrata, Pacajes Province, Mario Acho Nina
Theses and Dissertations
The llama (lama glama) in the Bolivian Highlands region is a most important potential resource from the socio-economic point of view for the dedicated producer to the management and exploitation of these Andean camelids, considered as national heritage of our country. The llama is completely adapted to the high plateau system, being considered a three purposed animal in this environment: producer of fiber, meat and work (load). However, due to the expansion of sheep and cattle, they have been marginalized to the poor areas, where they prosper well because they are rustic, sober and greatly efficient in the conversion of …

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
THE FIRST REAL BEGINNING to our understanding of wolf social ecology came from wolf 2204 on 23 May 1972. State depredation control trapper Lawrence Waino, of Duluth, Minnesota, had caught this female wolf 112 km ( 67 mi) south of where L. D. Mech had radio-collared her in the Superior National Forest 2 years earlier. A young lone wolf, nomadic over 100 km2 (40 mi2) during the 9 months Mech had been able to keep track of her, she had then disappeared until Waino caught her. From her nipples it was apparent that she had just been …

A LARGE, DARK WOLF poked his nose out of the pines in Yellowstone National Park as he thrust a broad foot deep into the snow and plowed ahead. Soon a second animal appeared, then another, and a fourth. A few minutes later, a pack of thirteen lanky wolves had filed out of the pines and onto the open hillside.
Wolf packs are the main social units of a wolf population. As numbers of wolves in packs change, so too, then, does the wolf population (Rausch 1967). Trying to understand the factors and mechanisms that affect these changes is what the …

Phase-Feeding Affects Crude Protein Intake, Excretion, And Retention Of Broilers From 21 To 63 Days, Niki Loupe, Trey Pope, Padmakumar Pillai, Jason Emmert
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
An experiment was conducted to assess effects of phase-feeding (PF) on crude protein (CP) intake, excretion, and retention of broilers. Six birds were housed individually and were fed diets formulated using recommendations from National Research Council (NRC) or linear regression equations. Two PF treatments were prepared: standard (PF) and low (PF10), in which predicted lysine, sulfur amino acids, and threonine recommendations were reduced by 10%. For PF and PF10, two diets (high-nutrient and low-nutrient density) were blended in variable quantities to produce rations matching predicted amino acid requirements over two intervals. Birds were fed a single NRC grower and finisher …

The Effects Of Composition And Processing Of Milk On Foam Characteristics As Measured By Steam Frothing, Michael Levy
LSU Master's Theses
Steam frothing of milk is required to produce an acceptable foam for many espresso coffee drinks. Specific aspects of composition and processing may affect the foaming properties of milk. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of fat content, heat treatment, free fatty acid addition and storage time on the frothing properties of milk. The four treatments included: fat content (0.08% and 3.25%), pasteurization temperatures (171°F for 15 seconds and 210°F for 45 seconds), pre and post-pasteurization addition of lauric acid solution (0.0% and 2.0% of 0.5 M concentration) and storage time (1 and 10 days). For …

The Effects Of Replacing Fish Oil With Vegetable Oils In Starter Feeds On The Liver Fat Composition Of Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax L., 1758), Mustafa Yildiz, Erdal Şener
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The effects of replacing fish oil with soybean oil, sunflower oil, corn oil and olive oil in starter feeds on the vicerosomatic index, hepatosomatic index and liver fatty acid composition of the sea bass were studied. Juvenile sea bass (initial weight = 7.58 ± 0.13 g) were fed experimental diets for 75 days. The fish were then killed and liver samples were collected. The lowest total crude fat value (17.61%) was found in the fish fed the fish oil diet. The highest total crude fat value (34.30%) was found in the fish fed the olive oil diet (P < 0.05). Similarly, the fish fed the fish oil diet had the lowest hepatosomatic index value (2.08) and all the fish fed vegetable oils had similarly high hepatosomatic index values (P < 0.05). Likewise, vicerosomatic index values were lowest (9.06%) in the fish fed fish oil and highest in the fish fed soybean and other vegetable oils (P < 0.05). Fatty acid analyses showed that EPA and DHA from n-3 HUFA's in the fish fed the fish oil diet, linolenic acid (18:3n-3) and linoleic acid (18:2n-6) in the fish fed the soybean oil diet and oleic acid (18:1n-9) in the fish fed the olive oil diet were higher than in the fish fed the other diets.

In 1996, the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) published a report entitled Integrated Animal Waste Management. One of the recommendations in that report was to “change animal diets to decrease nutrient outputs” (CAST 1996, 1). Since that time, concentration of animal production units has continued, public concern about the environmental effects of animal manure has increased, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed more restrictive requirements for concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO regulations).
Progress has been made since 1996 to decrease nutrient outputs by animals through diet modification and nutrition. The current study describes the existing …

This discussion paper has been prepared to assist in the assessment of the possible impact of the translocation of brown trout (Salmo trutta) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), into and within Western Australia, for the purposes of recreational stock enhancement in public waters, non-commercial aquaculture on private properties and commercial aquaculture. In assessing the translocation of any aquatic species, economic and social benefits must be balanced with biological and environmental risks.
Effects Of Protein Level And Gender On Estimation Of Lean Gain Per Day Of Pigs From A Terminal Crossbreeding System, G.W. Libal, C.R. Hamilton, J.N. Tembei
Effects Of Protein Level And Gender On Estimation Of Lean Gain Per Day Of Pigs From A Terminal Crossbreeding System, G.W. Libal, C.R. Hamilton, J.N. Tembei
South Dakota Swine Research Report, 2001
Lean growth potential is currently used to typify pigs when designing nutritional programs The most common method of estimating lean growth type is by measuring gain over the growth-finsih period and obtaining carcass information for the pigs evaluated. This information is placed in a model to calculate lean gain/day. Excess protein is fed to ensure that the genetic potential for lean gain per day is not limited by nutrition. The data reported herein are the results of determining the lean growth potential of the SDSU research herd in 1992 with pigs fed two different protein regimens.

Effect Of Formulating Diets To Reduce Excess Amino Acids On Performance Of Growing And Finishing Pigs, G.W. Libal, D.N. Peters
South Dakota Swine Research Report, 2001
For every stage of growth, pigs have a requirement for essential amino acids provided in a specific ratio and for additional nitrogen provided as amino acids or other nitrogen sources to allow synthesis of nonessential amino acids. The typical manner of balancing swin diets has involved supplying several traditional feed ingredients in a ratio in the diet that meets the required level of the most limiting amino acid leaving excesses of most other amino acids. With this method, considerable nitrogen above that needed for nonessential amino acid synthesis is provided and excess nitrogen is excreted in the urine as urea. …
