Annotated Checklist Of Bats From South Dakota, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways
Annotated Checklist Of Bats From South Dakota, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Excepting the generalized accounts of Over and Churchill (1945), no attempt has been made previously to summarize the distribution of bats in South Dakota. In 1960, 1961, and again in 1965, field parties from the Museum of Natural History of The University of Kansas collected mammals in that state. Bats obtained by these parties, together with those on deposit in other institutions and the few specimens earlier reported from South Dakota by other workers (see cited literature), form the basis of the present report. Eleven species are here treated; two of these are represented in the state by two subspecies. …

Investigations Into The Spawning Ecology Of The White Bass Roccus Chrysops, (Rafinesque) In Utah Lake, Utah, Frédérick Vinvent
Theses and Dissertations
Utah Lake, located in Utah County, north-central Utah, is one of the most important natural fishing lakes in the state. The spawning ecology of the white bass (Roccus chrysops) was studied in Utah Lake between 1964 and 1966. Gill nets and seining were the primary means of sampling. The spawning location was sampled every other day throughout the spring and early summer of 1966. Three major winter schooling areas were found: Provo Bay - Creer Access south to the mouth of Spanish Fork River, Lincoln Beach, and off Ludlow Barn. There appears to be extensive winter feeding and movement among …

Life History And Ecology Of The Colorado Chipmunk (Eutamias Quadrivittatus Hopiensis), Carl Eugene Wadsworth
Theses and Dissertations
Observations of reproductive behavior, growth and development of the young, food habits, habitat preference, and daily and seasonal activity patterns of the Colorado chipmunk are presented for the first time. The breeding cycle is as follows: mating occurs in late February or early March; the young are born in early to mid-April and first appear above ground in May, but do not reach breeding age until the following spring. There is only one litter of young per year. The mean number per litter was 5.7 for three litters born in captivity. The sex ratio of the animals born in captivity …

Presettlement Vegetation And Vegetational Change In Three Valleys In Central Utah, Earl M. Christensen, Hyrum B. Johnson
Presettlement Vegetation And Vegetational Change In Three Valleys In Central Utah, Earl M. Christensen, Hyrum B. Johnson
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
Historical information, survey records, and relict vegetation were used as sources of data for determining the nature of the presettlement vegetation of Pavant, Round, and Juab Valleys in central Utah. The foothills were covered with bunch grasses (principally Agropyron spicatum and Poa secunda), scattered junipers (Juniperus utahensis), and sagebrush (Artemisia tridentate). Western wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii) was common on level areas within the foothills. Below the foothill region on the more gentle slopes and benchlands there was a broad belt dominated by bunch grasses. The grassy area intergraded into a zone dominated by northern …

Populations Of Peritrichs On The Pond Snail, Physa Gyrina Say, Peter Moyle
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
There are many obscure niches in a, pond that make fascinating ecological studies. The shell of a pond snail such as Physa gyrina Say, is one of these. In this study alone, 18 species of attached animals and plants were found growing on P; gyrina shells. About half of these species occurred on the shells in large numbers and completed a large part of their life cycle there. On P. gyrina, the most abundant animals included three species of protowans and a tendipedid larva. The protozoan species, Epistylus niagarae Stokes, Opercularia ramosa Stokes, and V orticella campanula Ehrenberg all belong …

The Relation Of Spring Bird Distribution To A Vegetation Mosaic In Southeastern Washington, Paul A. Johnsgard, W. H. Rickard
The Relation Of Spring Bird Distribution To A Vegetation Mosaic In Southeastern Washington, Paul A. Johnsgard, W. H. Rickard
Paul Johnsgard Collection
Climax vegetation is of particular interest for study since it is the oldest and most stable vegetation of a region and should be expected to have a distinctive complement of animals. The purpose of this investigation was to observe the predilection of birds for stands representing climax plant associations in a remnant of native grassland in southeastern Washington.
The grasslands of this region were rapidly converted from grazing use to wheat production beginning about 65 years ago (Daubenmire 1942) and as a result only a few scattered remnants of native vegetation remain today. Associated with changes in vegetation there have …
Effects Of Water Fluctuation And Vegetation Change On Bird Populations, Particularly Waterfowl, Paul A. Johnsgard
Effects Of Water Fluctuation And Vegetation Change On Bird Populations, Particularly Waterfowl, Paul A. Johnsgard
Paul Johnsgard Collection
In recent years reclamation activities in the Columbia Basin of Washington have resulted in profound changes in the character of the entire landscape throughout this region. The present study is an attempt to clarify some of the biological effects of impoundment behind O'Sullivan Dam in the Potholes area, Grant County (Johnsgard 1955b). In this area, a large expanse of moving sand dunes and a high water table are responsible for causing the formation of numerous small water areas, or "potholes," between the dunes. The physical nature of the area and its limited potentialities have made it of little value to …
Waterfowl Sex Ratios During Spring In Washington State And Their Interpretation, Paul A. Johnsgard, Irven O. Buss
Waterfowl Sex Ratios During Spring In Washington State And Their Interpretation, Paul A. Johnsgard, Irven O. Buss
Papers in Ornithology
Sex-ratio studies have received much attention from research workers in recent years. The contributions of Hochbaum (1944), Petrides (1944) and others have yielded considerable information on sex ratios in waterfowl; Beer (1945) and Yocom (1949) have presented data for the state of Washington. To interpret regional data on waterfowl sex ratios adequately, it is necessary to obtain a series of uninterrupted observations covering the entire migration period of the species concerned. In 1954, an ecologic study was conducted in the Potholes area, Grant County, central Washington (Johnsgard, 1956). During the period February 15 to May 16, sex-ratio data were collected …
Fall Distribution Of Birds In A Palouse River Canyon, Frank B. Golley, Paul A. Johnsgard
Fall Distribution Of Birds In A Palouse River Canyon, Frank B. Golley, Paul A. Johnsgard
Paul Johnsgard Collection
During the fall and winter of 1953 the writers undertook a general ecological study of a portion of the Palouse River valley, near Armstrong, Whitman County, Washington. During the course of these investigations records were kept on the numbers of birds observed and the vegetation in which they were located. It was anticipated that these observations might indicate bird-use of the major vegetational types found in the area. Several investigators (Dumas 1950; Wing 1949) have published distributional data for birds of the Palouse grassland during the nesting, period, but few have been concerned with distribution patterns during the fall migration.
Mammals Of The Lynndyl, Utah, Sand Dune Area : A Population Problem, Hugh J. Phillips
Mammals Of The Lynndyl, Utah, Sand Dune Area : A Population Problem, Hugh J. Phillips
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the kinds, population, distribution, and general habits of the mammals of the Lynndyl sand dune area. Only one article concerning the dunes was found, but several have been written on other dunes; however, none was found concerning mammals. Two quantitative studies, plot and transect trappings, were made and general observations were taken within the study area. Three types of plots; Russian thistle, juniper, and baren moving dunes; were trapped and revealed the following species: Dipodomys ordii, Peromyscus maniculatus, Reithrodontomys megalotis, Onychomys leucogaster, and Neotoma lepida. The most numerous animal in all plots …
Courtship Activities Of The Anatidae In Eastern Washington, Paul A. Johnsgard
Courtship Activities Of The Anatidae In Eastern Washington, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
The many interesting and sometimes spectacular aspects of waterfowl courtship have been observed and recorded by several writers. Among the best and most complete descriptions are those of Bent (1923, 1925), Townsend (1910, 1916), Wetmore (1920), and Hochbaum (1944). However, for the most part these are unillustrated, deal with only a few species, or are based on limited observations.
Birds Observed In The Potholes Region During 1953-1954, Paul A. Johnsgard
Birds Observed In The Potholes Region During 1953-1954, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
From June 15-August 15, 1953 and from February 15 to August 15, 19 5 4 the writer did extensive field work in the Potholes Region of Grant County,Washington, gathering data for an ecological study of the vegetation and wildlife of that area. During this time considerable observations of the bird life were made, which for the most part were restricted to the area adjacent to O'Sullivan Dam and Potholes Reservoir.
