The Effect Of Ellagic Acid On Performance, Digestibility, Egg Quality, Cecal Bacterial Flora,Antioxidant Activity, And Some Blood Parameters In Laying Quails Reared At Differenttemperatures, Seda İflazoğlu Mutlu, Talat Güler

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the effect of ellagic acid on the performance, egg quality, digestibility, cecal microflora, serum malondialdehyde (MDA) level, and biochemical parameters in quails reared under normal conditions and at high environmental temperatures was investigated. The animals (n = 240; 5-weeks old) reared at 2 environmental temperatures [thermoneutral (TN) and heat stress (HS)] and in 4 diet groups containing different ellagic acid doses (0, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) were randomly assigned to 8 groups according to the 2 × 4 factorial design. Feed intake, egg weight, and egg production were higher (P < 0.001) and feed conversion (P < 0.01) was better in the TN groups compared to the HS groups. Egg (P < 0.01) and shell weights (P < 0.001) were higher in the TN groups compared to the HS groups. The effect of ellagic acid supplementation on shell weight was statistically significant in the TN and HS groups (P < 0.05). The effects of environmental temperature and the supplementation of ellagic acid on digestibility of dry matter (P < 0.05), ether extract (P < 0.01), and crude protein (P < 0.01) were statistically significant in the TN and HS groups. Supplementation of ellagic acid reduced the total coliform bacteria count (P < 0.01) and increased the total lactic acid bacteria count (P < 0.001) in the cecum. Serum MDA levels increased with heat stress (P < 0.001) and decreased with the supplementation of ellagic acid (P < 0.001). The effect of environmental temperature on serum glucose (P < 0.001), cholesterol (P < 0.05), total protein (P < 0.05), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (P < 0.001), sodium (P < 0.05), and magnesium was significant. In conclusion, the supplementation of ellagic acid decreased oxidative stress and total coliform bacteria count and improved the feed conversion and egg quality in quails under heat stress. Moreover, ellagic acid increased the digestibility of nutrients and had a positive effect on lactic acid bacteria. It was observed in this study that these beneficial effects of ellagic acid increased with an increasing dose, and 400 mg/kg was the most effective dose.

Carnitine Concentrations In Healthy And Septicaemia Suspected Neonatal Calves And Itsrelation To Passive Immunty, Erhan Gökçe, Mahmut Sözmen, Canan Gülmez, Kadi̇r Bozukluhan, Gürbüz Gökce, Emi̇ne Ataki̇şi̇, Mehmet Çi̇ti̇l, Hi̇dayet Meti̇n Erdoğan Jan 2021

Carnitine Concentrations In Healthy And Septicaemia Suspected Neonatal Calves And Itsrelation To Passive Immunty, Erhan Gökçe, Mahmut Sözmen, Canan Gülmez, Kadi̇r Bozukluhan, Gürbüz Gökce, Emi̇ne Ataki̇şi̇, Mehmet Çi̇ti̇l, Hi̇dayet Meti̇n Erdoğan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was designed to determine carnitine concentrations in newborn calves with suspected septicaemia, healthy calves, and colostrum samples as well as to detect alterations in blood carnitine concentrations after colostrum intake. Carnitine concentrations were detected in both neonatal calves with suspected septicaemia (n = 195) and healthy calves (n =10) as well as in colostrum/milk samples from their dams (n = 20). The mean carnitine concentration on the 2nd day after colostrum intake (32.61 μmol/L) was significantly higher than that measured before colostrum intake (17.61 μmol/L) (P < 0.05). The striking result was significantly lower mean carnitine concentration detected in calves with suspected septicaemia (17.11 μmol/L), compared to healthy calves (24.92 μmol/L) (P < 0.001). Apart from a sudden increase on day 7, no significant alteration was observed in colostrum/milk carnitine concentrations throughout the postpartum period. The results indicated that colostrum contained carnitine, which passed into the bloodstream of the calf by passive colostral transfer, and that a dramatic reduction in blood carnitine concentrations of calves with suspected septicaemia existed. The results might be of help in dealing with septicaemia suspected neonatal calves through both measurement of blood carnitine and, in response, to supplement such cases with carnitine.

High Level Of Fluctuating Asymmetry In The Byzantine Dogs From The Theodosius Harbor,Istanbul, Turkey, Abu B. Siddiq, Pere M Pares Casanova, Öğül Emre Öncü, Hakan Kar, Vedat Onar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Asymmetry, the abnormality of an organism or a part of it from its perfect symmetry, is represented by three different categories: fluctuating asymmetry, directional asymmetry, and antisymmetry. Fluctuating asymmetry attributes to random developmental variation of a morphological character, whereas directional asymmetry attributes one of the body sides to be more prominent than the other. Antisymmetry appears whenever one body side of a biological body shows greater morphological appearance than the other. Since more environmental stress often produces greater effect of fluctuating asymmetry, it can be a good indicator of physiological stress in the morphological characteristic of a biological being. Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This research examined the effects of liquid feeds on calf performance, rumen development, rumen cellulolytic bacteria count, and total bacteria diversity. Twenty Holstein bull calves were allocated to 2 groups either fed with milk replacer (MR) or whole milk. Calves fed milk tended to have higher (P = 0.058) average daily weight gain as compared to calves fed with MR during the entire experimental period. Starter mixture intake was not influenced by either milk or milk replacer feeding. Calves fed with milk had higher (P < 0.001) proliferative cells in the rumen papilla. The expressions of MCT1, MCT4, NHE1, NHE3, ACSS1, AceCS2, and ACSM1 genes, which are related to volatile fatty acid absorption, in the dorsal sac of the rumen were similar for calves fed either MR or whole milk. Fibrobacter succinogenes (P = 0.017) and Ruminococcus flavefaciens (P = 0.037) were significantly higher in the rumen of the milkfed calves. Moreover, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE)-derived dendrograms showed noticeable differences in ruminal microbial population between MR-fed and milk-fed calves. In conclusion, feeding calves with whole milk, which contains better quality protein and nutrients, instead of milk replacers, positively affects rumen development, cellulolytic bacteria numbers and total bacteria diversity.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

It was aimed to monitor postpartum (pp) uterine involution and follicular wave pattern by transrectal ultrasonography and detection of concentrations of milk progesterone (P4) in eleven water buffaloes during the summer season in Turkey. The data obtained from the first day of calving to positive pregnancy diagnosis were evaluated on a daily basis. Uterine position scores and nonechogenic material showed a decreasing grade pattern related to the time (P < 0.0001). A time effect was evident with uterine horn thickness (P < 0.05) or intercaruncular zone thickness (P < 0.01) and uterine horn lumen (P < 0.01). Uterine horn thickness showed a gravidity x time interaction (P < 0.05). Gravidity x time interaction was not evident in total uterine horn thickness but time effect was seen (P < 0.0001). Time effect was also evident for the thickness of uterine body (P < 0.0001) and cervix uteri (P < 0.01). The uterine body and horns were returned to previously nongravid state on day 26.00 ± 2.38 and the interval from calving to complete disappearance of uterine fluid was accomplished on day 31.44 ± 3.23 pp. The previously gravid and nongravid uterine horns, uterine body and cervix uteri involuted on day 31.42 ± 1.39, 28.37 ± 0.65, 29.37 ± 0.73 and 27.87 ± 0.47 pp, respectively. The interval from calving to first observation of dominant follicle of nonovulatory wave was 18.54 ± 6.91 days and on average 3.45 ± 1.91 nonovulatory waves were observed. Postpartum first ovulation occurred on day 64.45 ± 18.49. One and two wave models or combination of both waves were observed. The interval from calving to pregnancy was 72.36 ± 21.33 days. The maximum concentrations of milk P$_{4}$ during short or normal cycles and pregnancy were 0.62 ng/mL, 2.2 ng/mL, and 4.04 ng/mL, respectively. In conclusion, the presence of one or two waves should be considered when estrous synchronization programmes are planned in Anatolian water buffaloes during summer season.

Novel Heat Index Models For Subtropical Region Based On Daily Milk Production Incrossbred Holstein Cows, Neeraj Kashyap, Atish Kumar Chakravarty, Bharti Deshmukh

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The quantification of the effect of heat stress imposed due to higher rate of heat gain on animal production is a prerequisite while estimating effects of heat stress. Temperature humidity index (THI) models developed empirically using meteorological parameters have been utilized as an indicator of heat stress. This study attempted to develop a heat index model with respect to productivity of the crossbred Holstein cows. More than 1.23 million daily milk yield records of 1860 crossbred cattle spread over a duration of 30 years were utilized. Statistically significant (p < 0.0001) partial regression coefficients were estimated as 0.0748 ± 0.0009 for dry bulb temperature (T$_{db}$) and -0.2228 ± 0.0011 for wet bulb temperature in model 1, -0.0182 ± 0.0005 T$_{db}$ and -0.1205 ± 0.0006 for vapour pressure in model 2, -0.0150 ± 0.0006 for Tdb and -0.1151 ± 0.0006 for dew point temperature in model 3 while as -0.1283 ± 0.0004 for T$_{db}$ and -0.0394 ± 0.0002 for relative humidity in model 4. The ratio of the partial regression coefficients of meteorological parameters (ß2/ß1) was -2.9791 in model 1, 6.8739 in model 2, 7.6731 in model 3 and 0.3073 in model 4. The developed THI models are based on the effect of meteorological parameters on daily productivity of the dairy animals, so the weightages to meteorological parameters were contrastingly different than the reported THI models. These models may successfully be used to evaluate the impact of heat stress on crossbred Holstein cows with respect to milk productivity and many other traits.

There is limited data about the effects of vanadium (IV) chloride supplementation on appetite-related hormones in literature. Our target was to analyse the impacts of vanadium supplementation on appetite-related hormone (leptin, nesfatin-1 and apelin) levels in rats with experimentally induced diabetes. Twenty eight male Sprague-Dawley albino rats were used in this study. After formation of diabetes, 0.3 mg/mL of vanadium was added to drinking water of rats for four weeks. A substantial increment was found in serum glucose (p < 0.001), HbA1c (p < 0.001), HOMA-IR (p < 0.01), and leptin (p < 0.001) levels and a significant decrease in insulin, apelin and nesfatin-1 concentrations in diabetic rats. Moreover, blood glucose, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, and leptin levels decreased in diabetic + vanadium group, but nesfatin-1 (1.74 ± 0.94 ng/mL), apelin (1.74 ± 0.94 ng/mL), and insulin concentrations were found higher compared with the diabetic group. As a result of this study, vanadium has increased the levels of circulating nesfatin-1 and apelin levels in diabetic rats while decreasing blood glucose and leptin concentrations. But further studies are required to determine the blood glucose lowering effects of vanadium and its relationship with appetite related hormones in diabet.

Identification Of Micrornas In The Follicular And Luteal Tissues Of Holstein-Friesian Cows, Selçuk Özdemi̇r, Seli̇m Çomakli

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate many physiological pathways, including development, cell differentiation, immune response as well as diseases by post-transcriptional processes. However, information is limited regarding the biological roles of miRNAs in the development of the follicular and luteal tissues in cows. The main aim of the present study was to identify miRNAs that are expressed in the follicular and luteal tissues of cows. We used a comparative RNA sequencing method to identify miRNA candidates that might play key roles in the follicular and luteal phases of Holstein cows. Nine miRNAs were expressed at a high ratio: 8 in the follicular tissue …

Effects Of Different Selection Strategies On Subsequent Breeder Performance, Slaughter,And Carcass Traits Of Japanese Quail, Sohail Ahmad, Jibran Hussain, Hafiz Muhammad Ishaq, Athar Mahmud, Shahid Sherzada, Muhammad Usman, Abdur Rehman, Muhammad Zaid

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present study evaluated the effect of different selection strategies in four closebred flocks (CBF) at three ages on subsequent breeder performance and carcass traits. A total of 540 Japanese quails already selected for higher body weight from four CBF (Major, Kaleem, Saadat, and Zahid) at three ages (10, 12, and 14 weeks) were subjected to 3 selection strategies (i.e. pedigree, mass selection, and randombred control). In pedigree selection, 108 birds with higher body weight were selected with full pedigree record whereas, in the mass selection, 324 birds with higher body weight were selected to be the parents of the …

Effect Of Egg Weight On Development, Bone Morphology, And Breast Muscle Histology Of Embryos From Fast-And Slow-Growing Strains, Mojtaba Vafaeinia, Gamze Turgay İzzetoğlu, Zi̇şan Servet Yalçin

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present study aimed to determine the impact of egg weight on embryonic development, breast muscle histology, and bone morphology of fast- and slow-growing embryos and chicks. For this purpose, total 192 eggs from fast-(Ross 308) (FG) and slow-growing (Hubbard JA) (SG) broiler breeders were used. Eggs were classified as medium (64 ± 1 g, Megg) and heavy (72 ± 1 g, Hegg) eggs. At 18 days of incubation, egg weight loss, embryo weight, embryo length, breast width and length, yolk sac weight, and bone morphometric parameters were measured and breast muscle histology were studied. The same measurements were repeated …

This study presents the results of the study of clinical and hemostasis predictors of mammary gland tumors in bitches, which allow to determine the risk groups for this disease. The highest incidence rates were found in German and Eastern European Shepherds (22.1%), Dachshunds (12.8%) and Yorkshire terriers (9.5%) when kept in private households: 97.1%, 96.3% and 97.3%, respectively. Significantly increases the likelihood of mammary gland cancer in excess body weight - by 30%-100%, in the case of mixed feeding - up to 39.3%, the use of hormonal contraceptives - by 50%-60%. Adverse prognosis correlates with an increase in the size, …
