Studies On The Ascaris Lumbricoides, H. M. Martin Dec 1926

Studies On The Ascaris Lumbricoides, H. M. Martin

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The Ascaris lumbricoides, in one phase or another, has attracted the attention of parasitologists for many years, and during the last decade this parasite has been studied by a large number of investigators. The recent observations have been, to a great extent, directed along one line, the study of its life history. These investigators have established two important points: (a) That the life history of Ascaris is more complex than was supposed, as it has been found that a vasculo-pulmonary circuit of the larvae is necessary before they settle down in the intestine, where they develop to the adult …

Nutrient Requirements Of Growing Chicks, F. E. Mussehl Dec 1926

Nutrient Requirements Of Growing Chicks, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The object of our experimental work was to establish if possible certain principles of poultry nutrition, permitting later a better combination of natural feedstuffs with the highest growth efficiency.

Turkey Production, F. E. Mussehl Jul 1926

Turkey Production, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Whatever problems turkey production presents, lack of demand for roast turkey is not at this time one of them. Turkeys rate so high in popular esteem that very rarely indeed do prices fall below that of dressed chickens and usually the best grades are 12 to 15 cents per pound higher during the holiday season. The world of commerce has become quite complex but the consuming public still has one clear way of speaking to producers. In the language of the dollar we are apparently being asked to raise more turkeys.

The Preparation Of Laboratory Specimens As An Aid To The Diagnosis Of Animal Diseases, L. Van Es, L. V. Skidmore Jun 1926

The Preparation Of Laboratory Specimens As An Aid To The Diagnosis Of Animal Diseases, L. Van Es, L. V. Skidmore

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Many problems in connection with animal diseases require for their solution the application of methods which can only be undertaken in properly equipped laboratories. This ordinarily involves the collection, packing, and shipping of samples of specimens. The manner in which this is done is a most important factor and to a very large extent is responsible either for the success or for the failure of the undertaking. The discussion of the subject to which the following pages are devoted is taken in hand in the hope that it may provide guidance to the veterinarians and others who may have occasion …

The Evaluation Of The Dairy Cow, George Gardner May 1926

The Evaluation Of The Dairy Cow, George Gardner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The accurate appraisal of property is in a great many cases a difficult task. A savings account in a bank may be evaluated with high precision. A business building in a large city may bring in returns sufficiently steady and permanent so that a careful appraiser with a reasonable knowledge of depreciation losses to be anticipated might fix a value without very much error.

The Tapeworms Of The Rhinoceroses, A Study Based On Material From The Belgian Congo, Horace W. Stunkard Jan 1926

The Tapeworms Of The Rhinoceroses, A Study Based On Material From The Belgian Congo, Horace W. Stunkard

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

During the course of my study on the parasitic worms collected by the Lang-Chapin expedition of the American Museum to the Belgian Congo, I have had the good fortune to examine abundant material of Plagiotaenia gigantea (Peters). This interesting species, the first reported from the rhinoceros, has been confused with other cestodes from rhinoceros hosts, has been assigned to no less than three different genera in addition to the genus Taenia, to which it was originally referred, and has been the source of much discussion and difference of opinion during the past seventy years. A review of the literature …

Better Rations - More Eggs, F. E. Mussehl Oct 1925

Better Rations - More Eggs, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Well-bred and well-fed hens are conceded to be economical producers of a very wholesome food product, eggs, but our hens are not miracle workers and they insist on the right kind of raw material for building the egg. Nebraska poultry growers fortunately have all the natural feeds - corn, wheat, oats, barley, and dairy and packing house by-products - readily available at lower cash prices than prevail in most other states, and so our special problem is that of combining them so that eggs may be produced at the lowest cost per dozen.

Selection, Breeding, Methods Means More Milk, H. P. Davis Aug 1925

Selection, Breeding, Methods Means More Milk, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Milk good cows. It pays if you know how. Good dairy cows will always make money. Scrub, poor, or common cows never bring a good profit and usually cause a loss. Why waste feed and labor on inefficient producers, the kind that never make a satisfactory profit? Join a cow testing association. Let the tester keep books on your cows and let the milk scale and the milk sheet point out the money makers. Improvement comes only from selection and breeding.

Feeding The Dairy Cow, H. P. Davis Jul 1925

Feeding The Dairy Cow, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Cows produce milk from feed and water only. Therefore feed in proper quantity and quality is usually the limiting factor governing a cow's production up to the limit of her capacity.

Dairy Calf Care And Management, H. P. Davis, R. F. Morgan Jul 1925

Dairy Calf Care And Management, H. P. Davis, R. F. Morgan

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Calf raising begins before the calf is born. A cow that is healthy and in good physical condition will, in all probability, drop a strong, vigorous calf. The feeding and care of the cow before calving is therefore of the greatest importance for the future development of the calf.

Tuberculosis Of Swine, L. Van Es Feb 1925

Tuberculosis Of Swine, L. Van Es

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The tuberculosis of swine constitutes a definite and very interesting section of the general problem of the tuberculoses of warm-blooded animals. No one section of this general tuberculosis problem can be adequately solved without regard to all the other sections into which it may be divided. The disease in swine is perhaps the most outstanding example which illustrates this point. This animal, extremely susceptible to tuberculous disease, but without a type of infection specifically its own, derives its infection by contact with any of the types of tuberculosis of warm-blooded animals.

These Fifty Years: A History Of The College Of Agriculture Of The University Of Nebraska, R. P. Crawford Jan 1925

These Fifty Years: A History Of The College Of Agriculture Of The University Of Nebraska, R. P. Crawford

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

It seems especially appropriate at this time to publish a history of the College of Agriculture of the University of Nebraska. The year 1922 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the formal establishment of the college by the Board of Regents, while the year 1924 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the enrollment of the first students in agricultural subjects. It is hoped and intended that this little volume shall preserve for the future much valuable material that would otherwise soon be forgotten.

Better Sires -- Better Stock: Build Better By Breeding, H. P. Davis Oct 1924

Better Sires -- Better Stock: Build Better By Breeding, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Economy and logic indicate that the most satisfactory method of obtaining higher-yielding dairy cattle is to breed them. Nebraska raises the feeds - corn, oats and alfalfa - that will grow dairy cattle and can raise them as cheaply as any region. The method is simple. Use purebred dairy sires on the present cows. By the use of good purebred dairy sires great improvement can be obtained in a single generation.

How To Study The Western Birds, Grace Mccormac French Jun 1924

How To Study The Western Birds, Grace Mccormac French

Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds Documents

Originally a radio broadcast, this document explores the fraternal nature of bird watching. It was included in the papers of Dr. James A. Macnab, Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds's mentor at Linfield College. The article mentions various books by bird-watching authorities and naturalists from around the Pacific Northwest.

Dirks-Edmunds, a 1937 graduate of Linfield, graduated from the University of Illinois in 1941; she returned to teach in the Biology department at Linfield from 1941-1974.

Normal Spread Between Local And Terminal Market Prices For Sheep, Von T. Ellsworth May 1924

Normal Spread Between Local And Terminal Market Prices For Sheep, Von T. Ellsworth

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The consuming world must look to eight nations for 68 per cent of its supply of sheep and sheep products, as shown by the accompanying chart and table No. 1. Australia leads other nations with 19 per cent, while the United states follows with 8. 7 per cent of the world's sheep population. The nature of the industry confines it to the more sparsely populated regions, and areas ranking high in cheap grazing lands.

A Study Of The Effect Of The Age Of Parents On The Ability Of Dairy Cows To Produce Milk And Butterfat, J. Howard Maughan May 1924

A Study Of The Effect Of The Age Of Parents On The Ability Of Dairy Cows To Produce Milk And Butterfat, J. Howard Maughan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The question of the possible effect of the age of parents on the quality of the offspring which they produce has long been a disputed one. It is held by some that the ages of both parents act together in determining the quality of offspring. There are others who maintain that the age of the dam only is a factor and still others who believe that only the age of the sire need be considered in this connection.

Hog Houses For Nebraska, O. W. Sjogren, I. D. Wood Apr 1924

Hog Houses For Nebraska, O. W. Sjogren, I. D. Wood

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The material contained in this bulletin is a culmination of several years' study and investigation of the different types of hog houses used in Nebraska. It is realized that the plans given will not suit all conditions that may arise, but an effort has been made to bring out the essential factors so that the plans may serve as a guide in planning a house suited to particular conditions.

Bovine Tuberculosis, L. Van Es Feb 1924

Bovine Tuberculosis, L. Van Es

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Tuberculosis affects all species of domestic mammals although with different degrees of intensity and frequency. Cattle and swine furnish the greatest number of cases.

Bulletin 118 - Pigs And Pig Raising, P. G. Hampshire Jan 1924

Bulletin 118 - Pigs And Pig Raising, P. G. Hampshire

Bulletins 1 - 2999

The importance of the development of pig-raising as one of the primary industries of Western Australia cannot be too greatly stressed.

In Western Australia we have a deficiency in production of bacon and hams equal nearly £200.00 per annum. When this exceedingly profitable market has been satisfied, export markets are geographically very favourable to Western Australia pig raisers as compared to the rest of Australia.
