Aids To Better Shearing, W. L. Mcgarry, J. Reilly, M. Butler Jan 1952

Aids To Better Shearing, W. L. Mcgarry, J. Reilly, M. Butler

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

The demonstrations and instructional work in shearing that have been carried out in the farming areas have revealed the universal difficulty among learner-shearers in "getting a cut." Experience has shown that this absence of good cutting in handpieces has been due in large measure to the general lack of knowledge regarding grinding and the correct adjustment or "setting up" of the combs and cutters on the handpiece. Poor cutting has also resulted from the common practice of using combs and cutters that do not match, together with faulty handpiece maintenance. These and other factors leading to such poor results will …

The Improvement In Type Of South Dakota Dairy Cattle Through Artificial Breeding, Kenneth I. Gross Jan 1952

The Improvement In Type Of South Dakota Dairy Cattle Through Artificial Breeding, Kenneth I. Gross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Body conformation is associated with function among all classes of livestock. Dairy cattle type deals with characteristics indicating ability to produce milk and butterfat economically along with breed character and other values of an aesthetic nature. In order to have economical milk and butterfat production, the dairy cow should possess that type of body conformation which is able to withstand the rigors of disease, reproduction and year after year milk production. A large percentage of dairy cattle sold in South Dakota and surrounding territory, whether for breeding purpose or commercial production, are evaluated primarily on the basis of their type. …

Some Mechanical And Horomonal Methods Of Dilating The Bovine Cervix, Edmund F. Graham Jan 1952

Some Mechanical And Horomonal Methods Of Dilating The Bovine Cervix, Edmund F. Graham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The selection for certain inherited characteristics war practiced approximately 2000 years before the Christian Era. Jacob (Genesis 30:28-43) was given all the speckled cattle in his master’s herd for being herdsman. In a few years, by selecting for the spotting factor, only speckled cattle remained in the herd. Selection was the first tool for segregating definite characteristics. As a means of more rapid improvement artificial insemination was practiced by an Arabian chieftain as early as 1322 A. D. (35). Since 1322 these crude methods of transferring semen have been perfected until approximately four million cows were inseminated in the United …

Red-Backed Vole With A Tick Attached Near Eyeball, H. L. Gunderson Jan 1952

Red-Backed Vole With A Tick Attached Near Eyeball, H. L. Gunderson

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

A red-backed vole (Clethrionomys gapperi), with a tick attached to or just under the inner corner of the eyelid at the canthus, was caught in a live trap on July 11, 1961. This is an unusual place of attachment and it is difficult to understand how the tick could have become attached at a point where it could easily be scratched off by either the forefoot or hind foot of the vole.

North Of The Nullarbor Plain, A. R. Tomlinson, C. K. Blair

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

For a few hardy dingo-trappers—experienced bushmen able and willing to endure the rigours pf a nomadic existence in a waterless country - the area to the north of the Nullabor Plains has long been a favoured watering ground. In the 1949-1950 season bounties were paid on about 3,000 dingo scalps from this area.

Life Cycle Studies On Stephanostomum Pacificum, A New Species Of Trematode, From The Pacific Marine Station Area, James Frank Hughes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This report summarizes the results of a study on the life cycle of a member of the trematode family Acanthooolpidae, genus Stephanostomum Looss, 1899, which was carried on during the summers of 1948, 1949, 1951, and the winter of 1948-49 at the Marine Station of the College or the Pacific at Dillon Beach, California. Only one previous experimental work has been done on the life cycle of any member of this family. Martin (1939) reported the life cycle of Stephanostomum tenue (Linton) which he had obtained at Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Modifications of his technical procedures have been used in this …

Feeding Milking Shorthorn Steers, M. L. Baker, V. H. Arthaud, C. H. Adams

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The objectives of the feeding work were to provide the producer with feed-lot data and where possible with slaughter data for Milking Shorthorn steers. As a definite breeding research program with the Milking Shorthorn herd was planned, it also was believed that information about the beef-making qualities of the steers should be of equal importance with milk and butterfat production records.

Some Economic Aspects Of The Fluid Milk Industry Of Nebraska, Kenneth E. Anderson Jun 1951

Some Economic Aspects Of The Fluid Milk Industry Of Nebraska, Kenneth E. Anderson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Most citizens of Nebraska, especially the dairy farmers who produced milk for city consumption, are currently concerned with the problem of marketing fluid milk.In Nebraska and all over the United States, sales of wholesale milk farmers have been increasing for the past 15 years, while cream sales to creameries have been decreasing.

Production of milk in Nebraska is greatest in the eastern part of the state.Likewise, consumption is concentrated in Eastern Nebraska. This is most likely due to Eastern Nebraska’s highly concentrated population as well as the most favorable farm conditions for dairy cows.

Most of the bottled milk in …

A Taxonomic Study Of The Catostomidae Of Utah Lake With Notes On The Fish Population, Lyle Junior Lowder Jun 1951

A Taxonomic Study Of The Catostomidae Of Utah Lake With Notes On The Fish Population, Lyle Junior Lowder

Theses and Dissertations

During the period from October 1950 to March 1951 a study of the taxonomy of the Catostomidae of Utah Lake was undertaken. Throughout this study information was collected on the numbers of suckers taken by some of the fisherman. From the data gathered it appears that the three species of Catostomidae cringinally named from Utah Lake are still there. The external morphological features of these fish are not recognizable unless they are observed very carefully. The most outstanding external characteristics used to differentiate the species are the mouth, lips, papillae on the lips and the general shape of the head. …

Ecology Of Passerine Birds Wintering At Utah Lake, Joseph R. Murphy Jun 1951

Ecology Of Passerine Birds Wintering At Utah Lake, Joseph R. Murphy

Theses and Dissertations

During the period of October to April of the winter of 1950-51, an ecological study was undertaken of a population or passerine birds wintering in a segment of the Utah Lake Shore. Available winter weather data indicated that although such factors as precipitation, temperature, and wind may often be severe, they are not critical enough to prevent a fairly large population of passerine birds from spending the winter months in the study locale. Five fairly distinct plant communities can be recognized in the area. There is evidence which indicates that certain passerine bird species are especially dependent on a particular …

A Taxonomic And Distributional Study Of The Subspecies Of The Iguanid Lizard Uta Stansburiana In The Eastern Great Basin 1950-1951, Dale D. Parker

Theses and Dissertations

This study is concerned with a critical analysis of species and subspecies of Uta stansburiana as it occurs in the Eastern Great Basin. In this study Urosaurus ornatus wrighti is also briefly discussed since it was until recently considered a member of the genus Uta and since it extends in the area which has been dealt with in this thesis. This problem necessitated study of large series of lizards in order to work out subspeciation. The material from the Brigham Young University collection and the specimens collected by the author total 520. After recording dorsal scale counts, prefrontal scales, keelation …

The study of the Utah sculpin in Logan River was based on 801 specimens collected during 1949 to March 1951. Numbers of fish examined for various catagories of the study wares length-frequency, 495; aging by vertebrae, 407; length-weight relationship, 601; and food habits, 275.

Fish were collected by use of an electric shocking machine generating 600 watts and 220 volts. Numbers of fish occurred as high as 150 per tenth mile of stream. Preferred habitats occurred in areas of coarse gravel and small rocks.

Vertebrae dissected from the fish were used in age determination. Length-frequency proved to be a general …

The Opercular Bone As An Indicator Of Age And Growth Of The Carp Cyprinus Carpio Linnaeus, William J. Mcconell May 1951

The Opercular Bone As An Indicator Of Age And Growth Of The Carp Cyprinus Carpio Linnaeus, William J. Mcconell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As part of an investigation of the non-game fish resources of Utah, a study of the age and growth rate of the carp was instituted. A preliminary investigation indicated that the opercular method was superior to several other methods of determining age and growth in the carp. Age and growth were calculated from the opercular bones of 330 carp collected at Ogden Bay Refuge in 1950-51. Distances to annuli were measured directly. The relationship between the posterior radius of the opercular bone and the standard length of the carp was curvilinear. Past growth was calculated with a logarithmic nomograph. Expected …

The study of the Utah sculpin Cottus bairdi semiscaber, or Rocky Mountain bullhead as it is known locally on Logan River, Utah, is primarily one of determining its relation to game fish. Field work for this study began in 1949 and continued to March of 1951. Numbers of the Utah sculpin on Logan River have been estimated to be as high as 150 per tenth mile of stream. The larger populations are in the area of the third impoundment on Logan River and downstream.

Effects Of Aureomycin In Milk Used For The Manufacture Of Cheese, James A. Banghart May 1951

Effects Of Aureomycin In Milk Used For The Manufacture Of Cheese, James A. Banghart

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Importance of project:

In recent years many antibiotics have come to the foreground as a treatment for mastitis. Aureomycin is one of the more recent antibiotics that has been used for this purpose.

Aureomycin has been reported to be successful in curing some types of mastitis, but milk produced by cows that have been treated with Aureomycin does not act normal in the cheese manufacturing process. The most noticeable effect in milk from cows treated with Aureomycin has been slow or complete cessation of acid production by bacteria in cultured dairy products; this has been especially true in the cheese …

The demand for milk solids shortage and it may make a higher score ice cream. The demand for milk solids has been increasing so rapidly that today …

The Effect Of Common Contaminants On Cheese Starter, Ivan R. Miller May 1951

The Effect Of Common Contaminants On Cheese Starter, Ivan R. Miller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Starter is the "heart" of the cheese making industry. Only by proper handling of starter can good quality cheese be made. The economic loss from contaminated starter may prove disastrous to a cheese plant if proper corrective measures are not taken.

Milk usually contains a variety of bacteria. Under plant conditions some of these bacteria get into the mother starter or bulk starter unless extreme caution is used. Comparatively little is known about how one organism influences another when grown in milk. This problem is important in the cheese industry.

Reactions Of The Rocky Mountain Muskrat Ondtra Zibethica Osoyoosensis (Lord) To Drought Conditions At Ogden Bay Bird Refuge, Utah, Edward V. Saunders

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Perhaps no mammal on the North American Continent has received more attention in the literature than the muskrat (Ondatra spp.), but little of this material pertains to the reactions of muskrat populations to drought conditions. The author was unable to find any literature containing information on the reactions of the Rocky Mountain muskrat Ondatra zibethica osoyoosensis (Lord) to drought conditions in Utah. This information is of vital importance in formulating muskrat management programs in the State.

On many farms the muskrat population represents the greatest cash value of any kind of wildlife, and they utilize swamp areas and marshlands …
