Stocking Rate And Wool Production At Kojonup, Davies H. Lloyd, A. W. Humphries

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

RESEARCH workers in several parts of the world have recognised the overriding importance of stocking rate in raising animal production per acre.

This article describes some of the initial work on the effect of stocking rate on wool production and liveweight change in medium-Peppin Merino sheep.

The work was carried out at the C.S.I.R.O. "Glen Lossie" Field Station at Kojonup, Western Australia.

The Control Of Stock Medicines, J Shilkin Jan 1965

The Control Of Stock Medicines, J Shilkin

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

WHILST it is generally known that medicines sold for human use are the concern of the various health authorities throughout Australia and that many precautions are taken to ensure that these are both safe and efficient, it may not be so widely known that the sale of preparations for both internal and external use in stock is controlled for the same purposes by the veterinary authorities.

Lot Feeding Of Beef Cattle. 3. Facilities Required For A Feed Lot, W J O Wilkie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

MANY THINGS must be considered in planning a feed lot.

The site must be well chosen, fencing, gates and yards must be adequate for the cattle carried and feeding and watering facilities should be of a high standard.

Other things to consider are the provision of shelter and shade for the cattle and buildings for feed storage and other purposes.

Stinkwort (Inula Graveolens Desf.), G R W Meadly Jan 1965

Stinkwort (Inula Graveolens Desf.), G R W Meadly

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE original home of stinkwort is the Mediterranean region, including northern France. Apparently the first Australian record was at Onkaparinga in South Australia about 90 years ago.

Efforts were made to keep it in bounds during the years immediately following introduction, but it continued to spread and is now f i r m ly established in all agricultural districts of South Australia.

It also covers large tracts of land in New South Wales and Victoria and occurs in most districts of Western Australia.

Growth Of The Broiler Industry In W.A, D F. Hessels

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE production of poultry meat in W.A. before 1956 was only a side-line for egg producers or small, mixed farmers.

Most of the meat available was made up of culled hens, first cross cockerels and some heavy breed birds.

Pig-Pox, F C. Wilkinson Jan 1965

Pig-Pox, F C. Wilkinson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE lesions of pig-pox appear rather alarming when seen for the first time.

Fairly large red areas initially appear on the pig's skin followed later by scab formation, with healing two or three weeks after the first appearance of the disease.

Lot Feeding Of Beef Cattle. 5. Feed Lots And Animal Health, W J O Wilkie Jan 1965

Lot Feeding Of Beef Cattle. 5. Feed Lots And Animal Health, W J O Wilkie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

BRINGING cattle from various sources together in a feed lot makes them more liable to disease than they would be in the open paddock.

Precautions, careful selection, prevention and vaccination can reduce the risk of disease and the possible need for treatment during the feed lot fattening period.

Starvation In Newborn Lambs, Stanley M. Dennis Jan 1965

Starvation In Newborn Lambs, Stanley M. Dennis

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

INVESTIGATIONS over the past three years have shown that most lamb deaths in Western Australia occurred within the first three days of life.

Sixty per cent, of these losses were due to starvation/mismothering.

A Comparative Study Of Gross Pelvic Anatomy And Renal Histology Of Two Species Of Sparrows, Shirley Ann Hoskins

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

While in no way passing judgments on the quality of the investigations which have been published, there is one conclusion that must be reached and this is that there is room for further investigations. The studies which form the basis of this paper were undertaken to widen the general range of information on the avian kidney and its associated osseous cradle. In addition to the discussion, numerous photographs and diagrams are submitted to clarify and support the text. The present paper deals with with kidney and pelvic girdle of two species of sparrow: Zonotrichia leucophrys and Passer domesticus.

Two New Species Of Plistophora (Microsporidea) From North American Fish With A Synopsis Of Microsporidea Of Freshwater And Euryhaline Fishes, Robert E. Putz, Glenn L. Hoffman, Clarence E. Dunbar Jan 1965

Two New Species Of Plistophora (Microsporidea) From North American Fish With A Synopsis Of Microsporidea Of Freshwater And Euryhaline Fishes, Robert E. Putz, Glenn L. Hoffman, Clarence E. Dunbar

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Two new species of Microsporidea, Plistophora salmonae from steelhead and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) and Plistophora cepedianae from gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) are described. Schizonts to spores of P. cepedianae were found at one time within the same cyst, while only sporonts and spores of P. salmonae were found within the cyst. An illustrated synopsis of the known Microsporidea of freshwater and euryhaline fishes is given.

Eimeria Aurati N. Sp. (Protozoa:Eimeriidae) From Goldfish (Carassius Auratus) In North America, Glenn L. Hoffman Jan 1965

Eimeria Aurati N. Sp. (Protozoa:Eimeriidae) From Goldfish (Carassius Auratus) In North America, Glenn L. Hoffman

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

In March, 1962 this laboratory received some goldfish for disease diagnosis from Mr. Richard Rice, Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. Seven of 29 fish examined were infected with Eimeria. These fish had long, whitish, opaque fecal casts hanging from the anus. The casts were composed almost entirely of oocysts. When shed, they sank to the bottom and looked somewhat like "spent" tapeworms (Figs. 1, 2). The infected fish were very lethargic and their intestines were swollen with contained fluid. Although I believe that the Eimeria is pathogenic, a heavy infection of other parasites made this difficult to determine. These fish had apparently …

Studies On Myxosoma Cartilaginis N. Sp. (Protozoa: Myxosporidea) Of Centrarchid Fish And A Synopsis Of The Myxosoma Of North American Freshwater Fishes, Glenn L. Hoffman, Robert E. Putz, Clarence E. Dunbar Jan 1965

Studies On Myxosoma Cartilaginis N. Sp. (Protozoa: Myxosporidea) Of Centrarchid Fish And A Synopsis Of The Myxosoma Of North American Freshwater Fishes, Glenn L. Hoffman, Robert E. Putz, Clarence E. Dunbar

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Myxosoma cartilaginis n. sp. is described from the cartilage of Lepomis macrochirus (bluegill), L. cyanellus (green sunfish) and Micropterus salmoides (largemouth black bass).  The development of the parasite is described from naturally infected fish which were held in spore-free water after infection.  The sporoplasm invades cartilage, and becomes a multinucleate trophozoite which forms pansporoblasts, each of which produces 2 to 4 spores.  The first spores appear in 7 weeks.

The histopathology in the above fish consists at first of little cellular reaction, but after 4 to 5 months epithelioid granulomas appear arround some of the spore masses.  Cartilage liquefaction is …
