Relationships Among Herd Life, Milk Production, And Calving Interval, Paul Miller, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson Mar 1967

Relationships Among Herd Life, Milk Production, And Calving Interval, Paul Miller, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Whether to select for longer life in the herd or shorter calving interval depends on the genetic and phenotypic relationships among herd life, amount of milk in first lactation, and calving interval. Herd life and average calving interval are essentially phenotypically uncorrelated. The phenotypic and genetic correlations of herd life and milk in first lactation ranged from .19 to .25 and from .54 to .77, respectively. The phenotypic correlation of average calving interval and milk in first lactation ranged from .19 to .21. Estimates of the heritability of herd life ranged from .05 to .14. This heritability was reduced by …

Factors Determining Great Blue Heron Rookery Movement, James M. Kerns, John F. Howe Jan 1967

Factors Determining Great Blue Heron Rookery Movement, James M. Kerns, John F. Howe

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The damaging effect of Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) excrement on nest trees was determined by observation and Hellige-Truog soil analysis methods. In large heronries high chemical concentrations kill nest trees and result in movement of heronry boundaries to o live tree area.

The Moose In Northeastern Minnesota, Patrick D. Karns Jan 1967

The Moose In Northeastern Minnesota, Patrick D. Karns

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The succession of dominant cervids in northeastern Minnesota since settlement has passed from moose and woodland caribou to moose lo white-tailed deer and is now returning to moose. Results of recent studies show high moose densities in some areas are leading lo range deterioration and reduced net productivity. Pneumostrongylus tenuis, a common parasite of white-tailed deer but fatal to moose, is the etiological agent of moose disease. With increases in deer density, such as occurred in the 1920's and 30's, the reports of this disease in moose became more prevalent. Presently, where moose occur on the high deer density areas …

The Common Goldeneye Duck And The Role Of Nesting Boxes In Its Management In North-Central Minnesota, Leon L. Johnson Jan 1967

The Common Goldeneye Duck And The Role Of Nesting Boxes In Its Management In North-Central Minnesota, Leon L. Johnson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Evaluation of use of nesting boxes of two kinds by the common goldeneye duck (Bucephala clangula americana) in a wooded area of north-central Minnesota, where these ducks are fairly abundant, shows 69 to 80 percent of the usable boxes were eventually used. Wooden boxes were better accepted than metal boxes, but the latter provided greater protection from predators. Calculations from band recoveries indicate a hunting bag of about 36 percent for birds during their first year. This is a high rate of harvest, especially since goldeneyes do not breed until their second year. After the first year, however, mortality is …

Northern Pike Production In Phalen Pond, Minnesota, James E. Bryan Jan 1967

Northern Pike Production In Phalen Pond, Minnesota, James E. Bryan

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

In this study, certain physical, chemical and biological conditions were observed in order to relate them to the development and survival of eggs and young northern pike in a small pond. The spawning period lasted one week and was interrupted by unfavorable weather. Low temperature caused the eggs to develop at a rate slower than the rate other workers have shown to be normal. Many eggs between stages II and Ill appeared to be developing abnormally and were perhaps reacting to an unsuitable environmental condition. Since 90% of all eggs completed development, neither slow nor abnormal development increased the egg …

Evidence For Seasonal Variation In Incidence Of Renal Adenocarcinoma In Rana Pipiens, Robert Gilmore Mckinnell Jan 1967

Evidence For Seasonal Variation In Incidence Of Renal Adenocarcinoma In Rana Pipiens, Robert Gilmore Mckinnell

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A high incidence of frog renal adenocarcinoma as determined by autopsy in purchased late fall and winter individuals is contrasted to the scarcity of the adenocarcinoma in summer field captured frogs.

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Kandiyohi and burnsi frogs were collected in counties not previously reported to have these variants of R. pipiens.

Revised Distribution Records Of Some Minnesota Fishes, With Addition Of Two Species To The Faunal List, Gary L. Phillips, James C. Underhill Jan 1967

Revised Distribution Records Of Some Minnesota Fishes, With Addition Of Two Species To The Faunal List, Gary L. Phillips, James C. Underhill

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Recent collections of fishes in Minnesota hove resulted in the addition of two species, Moxostoma carinatum (Catostomidae) and Ammocrypta asprella (Percidae), to the state's inland faunal list. Additional information on the distribution of 11 other species (Minytrema melanops, Hybopsis x-punctata, Opsopoeodus emiliae, Dionda nubiloa, Notropis amnis, Notropis texanus, Notropis umbratilis, Pimephales vigilax, Lepomis humilis, Etheostoma asprigene, ond Etheostoma microperca) is presented . Collections in large rivers are responsible for several new distribution records, and further sampling in such habitats should lead to further discoveries.

Beef Production In A 14 Inch Rainfall District, D J. Barker, H. G. Cariss

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Progress report on a farm scale beef-raising investigation at the Department of Agriculture's Wongan Hills Research Station.

A SMALL herd of beef cattle was established at Wongan Hills Research Station in 1964 and the first crop of calves was dropped in the autumn of 1965. The calves' growth rates were recorded and they were marketed as 18-month-old steer beef in November, 1966.
