Effects Of Dietary Levels Of Manganese And Magnesium On Performance Of Growing-Finishing Swine Raised In Confinement And On Pasture, A. J. Svajgr, E. R. Peo, Jr., P. E. Vipperman, Jr. Jan 1969

Effects Of Dietary Levels Of Manganese And Magnesium On Performance Of Growing-Finishing Swine Raised In Confinement And On Pasture, A. J. Svajgr, E. R. Peo, Jr., P. E. Vipperman, Jr.

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Research on the optimum dietary levels of manganese and magnesium for growing swine is limited. Johnson (1940) fed pigs diets containing 0.3 to 100 ppm Mn and observed no difference in growth rate. Similarly, Liebholz, Speer and Hays (1962) found that 0.4 ppm Mn in the diet of baby pigs was sufficient to support maximum growth. A level of 4,000 ppm Mn was not toxic but growth rate of the pigs was reduced.

Growth Of Yorkshire Suckling Pigs, W. F. Gipp, W. G. Pond, L. Dale Van Vleck, P. D. Miller Jan 1969

Growth Of Yorkshire Suckling Pigs, W. F. Gipp, W. G. Pond, L. Dale Van Vleck, P. D. Miller

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The birth weights and daily liveweights for 87 male and 99 female pigs reared under drylot conditions were obtained over a 3-week period and used to construct a growth curve for the very young male and female pig. Analysis of variance was used to test litter and sex main effects and the litter x sex interaction effect on liveweight. The daily standard deviations of the 186 pig sample were calculated and are presented in graphic form. No significant difference between the growth of male and female pigs of this young age were found. The average birth and first-, second- and …

Sire Evaluation For Economic Merit, J. W. Wilton, L. Dale Van Vleck Jan 1969

Sire Evaluation For Economic Merit, J. W. Wilton, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Procedures for selecting sires are compared in terms of making maximum genetic progress in economic merit. A quadratic index, a simplified form of the quadratic index and a linear index to evaluate economic merit, and a restricted index to improve milk as much as possible while holding milk fat percentage constant, all result in nearly equal expected genetic progress in economic merit. Selection for milk production results in less expected genetic progress in economic merit, the extent of the decrease depending on the economic value of milk production at a given base test and on the test differential.

Evaluation of …

Indoor Versus Outdoor Calf Rearing At Three Weaning Ages, Larry J. Jorgenson Jan 1969

Indoor Versus Outdoor Calf Rearing At Three Weaning Ages, Larry J. Jorgenson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to be profitable, a dairy herb must have good heifers to meet replacement needs. According to USDA (51), these needs are substantial because 25% of the cows in an average herd must be replaced each year as they no longer return a profit. Meeting these herd replacement needs has long been a serious problem of the dairyman. Nation-wide calf loss estimates ranged between 8 and 25% with an estimated annual loss to the industry of $50 million (10). South Dakota dairymen are not immune to these mortality losses and some studies (28, 52) indicate that their losses may …

A Comparison Of Cheese Yields Produced From Normal And Abnormal Milk, Raymond L. Rennich Jan 1969

A Comparison Of Cheese Yields Produced From Normal And Abnormal Milk, Raymond L. Rennich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mastitis has long been a problem to the Dairy Industry. All milk constituents are affected. Abnormal milk usually has a slightly higher total nitrogen and a lower casein content than does normal milk. Since the percent casein is believed to have the greatest influence on the yield of cheese, it is postulated a lower casein content in milk will produce a proportionately smaller amount of cheese for a given volume of milk. Cheese factories presently buy milk on the basis of fat percentage and weight with no regard to the amount of total protein or casein present. Therefore, it would …

Vitamin A In Beef Cattle Feeding, L.B. Embry, L.J. Kortan Jan 1969

Vitamin A In Beef Cattle Feeding, L.B. Embry, L.J. Kortan

Agricultural Experiment Station Animal Husbandry Pamphlets

Vitamin A is essential for all cattle. The vitamin does not occur naturally in feeds of plant origin. Many cattle are never fed vitamin A as such but do not develop a deficiency of the vitamin. The reason for this is that many feeds (pasture, good quality hay, silage, and yellow com) furnish carotene which is converted to vitamin A in the animal body.

Propagation Of Pike In Multi-Purpose Lake Management, Oliver M. Jarvenpa, Warren Kirsch Jan 1969

Propagation Of Pike In Multi-Purpose Lake Management, Oliver M. Jarvenpa, Warren Kirsch

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Methods for rearing, harvesting, and management use of pike (Esox lucius L) in Minnesota are described, especially as related to multiple use of shallow water areas. Principal emphasis is placed on the method of removing fingerling and yearling pike in winter from shallow lakes. Such lakes often raise wild rice and also are utilized by waterfowl. The pike, spawned naturally in these lakes, are harvested by pumping aerated water through fish traps when oxygen levels in the lake become low. Pumping is most effective when oxygen levels in the lake fall below 2 parts per million but is higher in …

Bovine Tuberculosis Control In Western Australia : Past, Present And Future, M R. Gardiner

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

TWENTY YEARS AGO, tuberculosis was a widespread and serious disease in the dairy cattle of Western Australia.

Besides having a marked depressing effect on the economy of the dairying industry, bovine tuberculosis was a constant hazard to humans coming in contact with it.

On Models Of Commercial Fishing, Vernon L. Smith Jan 1969

On Models Of Commercial Fishing, Vernon L. Smith

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Commercial fishing is characterized by three key economic and technological features that are relevant to the formulation of an economic theory of fish production. 1. A fishery resource, although conceivably exhaustible, is replenishable; that is, it is subject to laws of natural growth which define an environmental biotechnological constraint on the activities of the fishing industry. 2. The resource and the activity of production from it form a stock-flow relationship. The new growth in the population fish mass depends upon the harvest rate relative to natural recruitment to the stock. If the harvest rate exceeds the recruitment rate, the stock …

Profitable Bacon Production In A Small Herd, B M. Goss Jan 1969

Profitable Bacon Production In A Small Herd, B M. Goss

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

PIG HERDS are tending to become larger and more specialised, but it is still possible for the small herd of less than 20 sows to absorb by-products and spare labour very profitably.

These advantages can be lost if the scale is larger.

More Butterfat Per Acre At Denmark Research Station, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

STOCKING rates on dairy farms are generally too low and can be substantially increased, but unfortunately there is no satisfactory measurement to indicate the potential of a particular pasture or environment.

A trial carried out on Denmark Research Station in 1966-67, to obtain information on carrying capacity of a dryland kikuyu-subterranean clover pasture.
