Aggressive Man And Aggressive Beast, Allen W. Stokes

Faculty Honor Lectures

Whether man can live in harmeny with his environment depends in great measure en his ability to' live with his fellew man. Can man learn to' engineer human seciety in time to' prevent a helecaust? Mere specifically, can we learn to' prevent aggressien er to' channel it harmlessly? The ethelegist leeks upen man's behavier as just part ef the tetal spectrum ef animal behavier. Therefere, much of what we learn abeut the behavier ef lewer animals sheuld relate to' human behavier.

Changes In Body Weight And Composition Of Adult Nongravid Female Rats Deprived Of Dietary Protein, W. G. Pond, L. Dale Van Vleck, E. F. Walker Jr., C. F. Eisenhard, J. R. O'Connor Mar 1969

Changes In Body Weight And Composition Of Adult Nongravid Female Rats Deprived Of Dietary Protein, W. G. Pond, L. Dale Van Vleck, E. F. Walker Jr., C. F. Eisenhard, J. R. O'Connor

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Seventy-six young adult nongravid female rats of the Carworth strain were used in two experiments to study the effect of dietary protein deprivation on body weight, feed consumption, body composition and serum protein concentration. Semipurified diets containing glucose, corn oil, vitamins and minerals with or without casein (protein-free = PF, 14% casein = C) were fed ad libitum in both experiments to rats caged in individual wire-bottom cages. Feeding the PF diet for up to 26 days resulted in a continuous weight loss over the entire period. The average loss in body weight as a percentage of initial weight of …

Calf Diarrhea (Scours): Reproduced With A Virus From A Field Outbreak, C. A. Mebus, N. R. Underdahl, M. B. Rhodes, M. J. Twiehaus Mar 1969

Calf Diarrhea (Scours): Reproduced With A Virus From A Field Outbreak, C. A. Mebus, N. R. Underdahl, M. B. Rhodes, M. J. Twiehaus

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Neonatal calf diarrhea typical of that seen in field cases was produced in colostrum-deprived calves by inoculating either feces or bacteria-free filtrates via the duodenum, orally, or by a spray (aerosol). Three calves, kept free of E. coli, developed severe diarrhea following inoculation with a bacteria-free filtrate. Intense fluorescence in the epithelium of sections of small intestine from two experimental calves was observed following staining with ftuorescein-labeled gamma globulin produced with viral antigen prepared from the feces of two experimental diarrhetic E. coli-free calves. Fluorescing cells were also present in the feces of experimental and field cases of neonatal …

Relationship Between Type Traits And Longevity Of Daughters Of Hew York Holstein Sires, L. Dale Van Vleck, D. B. Filkins, H. W. Carter, C. L. Hart Jan 1969

Relationship Between Type Traits And Longevity Of Daughters Of Hew York Holstein Sires, L. Dale Van Vleck, D. B. Filkins, H. W. Carter, C. L. Hart

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The percentage of 40 or more daughters having four lactations of 81 New York Holstein artificially insemination sires was correlated with the percentage of daughters in 66 type categories measured in the first lactation and their average first-lactation milk yield. Multiple regression on these type and production traits accounted for 92% of the variation in percentage of daughters having four lactations. A subset of 33 traits accounted for 82% of the variation. Traits with the largest standard partial regressions for longevity were milk production (.41), udder edema (.87 and .71), deep body (.53), medium upstandingness (.41), fore udder attachment (--.86 …

Meteorological Factors Controlling The Emergence Of The Eastern Spadefoot Toad, Scaphiopus Holbrooki Holbrookii Harlan, Larry Judy Jan 1969

Meteorological Factors Controlling The Emergence Of The Eastern Spadefoot Toad, Scaphiopus Holbrooki Holbrookii Harlan, Larry Judy

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Scaphiopus holbrooki holbrookii, the Eastern Spadefoot, can exist in an area for many years before it is detected. Its apparent scarcity can be explained by its secretive, fossorial habitat, protective coloration, and nocturnal behavior. Spadefoots are present at the surface locally in small numbers on any one night. They emerge only when conditions are optimum. One authority has suggested that temperature, moisture, and barometric pressure exert control over emergence.

It was the purpose of this research to discover the most important meterorological parameters and investigate how they control the behavior of Scaphiopus.

Initially the response, emergence to breed was distinguished …

Pollution And Evolution, David J. Merrell Jan 1969

Pollution And Evolution, David J. Merrell

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Three examples, industrial melanism in moths, insecticide resistance in insects, and myxomatosis in Australian rabbits, are used to illustrate the concept that evolution may result from tampering with the physical or biotic environment of a species. Hence, concern about the effects of pollution must encompass not only the possibility of extinction but the possibility of evolution. In the case of harmful species, biological or chemical control measures may result in populations more refractory to control than the original untreated populations.

Rest Site Selection By Radio-Tagged Raccoons, Jay H. Schnell Jan 1969

Rest Site Selection By Radio-Tagged Raccoons, Jay H. Schnell

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Daytime resting sites and behavior of 14 radio-tagged raccoons were studied from April 18 to November 27, 1965, with types and use of the sites, daytime activity and shifts at the sites, and approach movements previous to resting being analyzed. The radio system pinpointed 173 rest sites, 7 4 per cent in swamps, 17 per cent in hollow trees, and 9 per cent in squirrel or bird nests. Use of the rest sites did not correlate with habitat type or size of the home range or with distances which animals traveled during their active nightly period. Behavioral influences in selection …

Waterfowl Production In A Selected Wetland Management Area, Orlo A. Quame, Alfred H. Grewe Jr.

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This study of a Type 5 Federal Wetland Management Area showed that: (1) production (young remaining on the area to flight stage) in birds per acre was 0.74 in 1967 and 0.57 in 1968; (2) the greatest temporary use of the area was mode by blue-winged teal, 64 being sighted at one time; and (3) artificial loafing structures may increase use of a wetland by breeding ducks.

The Economics Of Transition In Farming, G D. Oliver

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

UNSTABLE income is a constant farm hazard. In addition to uncertainties like over production, obsolescence, rising costs and changes in consumer tastes which menace manufacturing industries, the farmer also has to contend with yield fluctuations arising from climatic conditions over which he has no control.

The Java Sparrow, John L. Long

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE attractive Java Sparrow (Padda oryzivora) with its immaculate grey, white and black plumage is a favourite caged bird both in Australia and abroad.

It represents, however, a species of considerable pest potential to the agricultural interests of this State.
