Effects Of Age, Herd, And Herd Status On Classification Scores Of Jersey Cattle, H. L. Barr, H. W. Carter, L. Dale Van Vleck
Effects Of Age, Herd, And Herd Status On Classification Scores Of Jersey Cattle, H. L. Barr, H. W. Carter, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Classification was arranged for herds belonging to the official Jersey program concurrently with classification for Jersey research herds. Herds were categorized as official, registered research and grade research. Cattle were also grouped as 2 year olds, 3 to 4 year olds and 5 year olds.
Differences for herd status were significant (P < .05) for all type traits except stature, breed character, feet and legs and fore udder. Research cattle scored higher only in dairy character and udder quality. Differences between registered research and grade research cattle were not significant.
Differences for age were significant for all traits except feet and legs, mammary and rear udder. Five year-olds scored highest in final score, general appearance, stature, breed character, back and rump, and chest and barrel. The traits relating to mammary system were scored higher on younger cows.

The Evolution Of Parasitism Among Bees, George E. Bohart
The Evolution Of Parasitism Among Bees, George E. Bohart
Faculty Honor Lectures
Before discussing parasitic bees, I will present a rough outline of the biology of "ordinary" or non-parasitic bees. The superfamily Apoidea (bees) includes perhaps 25,000 or 30,000 species divided into nine families by recent authorities (Stephen, Bohart, Torchio, 1969) . A common biological thread holding this vast assemblage together is the provision by adults of pollen and nectar for their young. Only in the honey bees (the genus Apis which includes four species) are the larvae fed primarily on a different substance (a secretion of the pharyngeal glands) , and even this is derived from pollen and honey eaten by …

Horse Safety Guidelines, U.S. Department Of Agriculture -- Extension Service
Nebraska 4-H Clubs: Historical Materials and Publications
The purpose of the National Horse and Pony Youth Activities Council is to help coordinate youth horse activities to obtain maximum benefit of the horse for developing youth. Since disregard of simple safety in handling horses can result in serious mishaps, knowledge and application of safety to riding is imperative to the purpose of the Council. Thus, the Council has developed guidelines to promote the safe use of the horse in an effort to improve the value of this animal in service to youth and society in general.

Growth In Weight Of Selected Organs, Tissues And Systems In The Pig, William J. Loeffel, Robert M. Koch
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
As a result of investigations at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station in 1929, 1930 and 1931 to determine the effect of weight and degree of fatness of the pork carcass upon the quality and palatability of the meat, 40 pigs were slaughtered, five each at the approximate live weights of 70, 80, 90, 100, 115, 135, 160, and 180 kg. This corresponds to carcass weights ranging from 50 to 150 kg. The results of the meat investigations and feedlot data were reported elsewhere (Loeffel et al.,1943). This study reports data relative to the weight of selected tissues and organs, as …

Feeding Urea To Cattle, D J. Barker
Feeding Urea To Cattle, D J. Barker
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
RUMINANTS normally obtain the protein they require by digestion of the organisms that inhabit the forestomach (rumen), not by direct digestion of the dietary protein they chew up and swallow.
The organisms break down the dietary protein and then rebuild proteins in the form of more organisms.
Mating Weaners Does Not Affect Future Ewe Performance, R J. Suiter, K. P. Croker
Mating Weaners Does Not Affect Future Ewe Performance, R J. Suiter, K. P. Croker
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Maiden ewes in Western Australia are usually mated in their second year because of supposed ill-effects of earlier mating on the ewe's future production. Mating at a younger age however, providing there was no reduction in future performance, would provide for an extra lamb drop and thus increase the lifetime output of ewes.
Information from various sources indicated that weaners could be successfully mated providing their bodyweights were satisfactory. This trial was carried out to test the results of mating weaners under Western Australian conditions.

Rearing Orphan Kangaroos, G L. Ward

LICENCES are required in Western Australia if certain kangaroos and all species of wallabies are kept in captivity, but orphaned young joeys often need care and hand feeding before they can be released to fend for themselves.

Dogs, Tapeworms, Cysts : And Soiled Sheep, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
To protect our export markets it is necessary to meet the required standards and to eliminate as far as possible any sources of cysts, contamination, blemished carcasses or other defects in meat.
Some of these things are beyond the control of the individual farmer, but there are some things he can do to help ensure that the sheep he sends to abattoirs are free of defects which threaten export markets.
Inoculation Abscesses Can Downgrade Carcasses, M R. Gardiner
Inoculation Abscesses Can Downgrade Carcasses, M R. Gardiner
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE presence of inoculation abscesses in meat is one of the lesser known causes of downgrading or rejection of carcasses, but these abscesses have caused increasing concern in recent years.
They have obvious importance in export carcasses.
