Small Rodent Populations And Biomass In Three Sagebrush Communities Of Rush Valley, Utah, David W. Nichols
Small Rodent Populations And Biomass In Three Sagebrush Communities Of Rush Valley, Utah, David W. Nichols
Theses and Dissertations
Three desert Artemisia tridentata communities in Rush Valley, Utah were trapped for small rodents during the summer of 1970 in a mark-recapture study. Population densities were estimated using several indices for each population category. Animals were weighed and rodent biomass calculated for each species throughout the summer. Populations, biomass, and other data were then analyzed to gain a better understanding of A. tridentata community types of the Great Basin. Peromyscus maniculatus, Eutamias minimus, and Reithrodontomys megalotis were common to area 1. Peromyscus maniculatus, E. minimus, and Perognathus parvus were common to areas 2 and 3. The peak estimated standing crops …

Torrent Ducks Of The Andes, Paul A. Johnsgard
Torrent Ducks Of The Andes, Paul A. Johnsgard
Paul Johnsgard Collection
Throughout the world there is probably no more rigorous environment for waterfowl than that provided by the Andean streams in South America. Rushing down the mountains from an altitude of 18,000 feet or more, tumbling over precipices, the streams eventually merge and grow into such giants as the Orinoco, Amazon, and Rio de la Plata on the Atlantic slope, or empty direct into the Pacific on the west side. In the intermediate elevations, mainly between 5,000 and 10,000 feet, a remarkable duck, fittingly called the torrent duck (Merganetta armata) makes its home among the rapids and cataracts. This …

Comparative Ecological, Morphological, And Behavioral Studies Of The Southern Blacknose Dace, Rhinichthys Atratulus Obtustjs Agassiz, And The Eastern Blacknose Dace, Bhinichtbis Atbatulus Atra'fulus (Hermann), In High And Low Altitude Streams In West Virginia And Virginia, Michael L. Little
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Comparative ecological, aorphological, and behavioral studies of the southern blaeknose dace, Rhiniohthys atratulus obtusus Agassiz, and the eastern blaokaose dace, B.hiniohtpys atratulus atratulus (Heraann), were made in high and low altitude streaas in West Virginia and Virginia. Statistical comparisons of the morphology of a. a.atratulus and R-.a.-obtusus showed no reliable body character that differentiated the two subspecies. Statistical tests indicated an intergrading population in Gandy Creek, a tributary of the Cheat River, in West Virginia. This was further substantiated by collecting males of the atratulus phenotype along with males of the native obtusus phenotype in adjacent sections of Gandy Creek. …
Blood Chemistry Values For Some Fishes Of The Upper Mississippi River, Joseph B. Hunn
Blood Chemistry Values For Some Fishes Of The Upper Mississippi River, Joseph B. Hunn
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Plasma concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, inorganic phosphate, glucose, lactic acid and total carbon dioxide and whole blood pH and hematocrit were determined for nine species of fish from the Upper Mississippi River area. Most of the values obtained fall within the range of values published for other freshwater fishes, except that the plasma concentrations of potassium and chloride in sexually mature walleye pike were low. The chloride was compensated for by a high plasma total carbon dioxide. Further studies should establish whether these blood chemistry values may be considered of normal range. counties.

Fisheries Report No 11 - The Fauna, Flora And Planned Usage Of The Dampier Archipelago, A. A. Burbidge, R. I. T. Prince
Fisheries Research Reports
The Dampier Archipelago is a group of islands off the north west coast of Australia (20 20! - 20 45'S, 116 Cast . 117°E), first discovered by William Dampier in 1699 and subsequently named after him by the Baudin expedition of 1801. This name has since been applied by some authors to include all islands from Roebourne to North West Cape, including both Barrow Island and the Monte Bello Islands, but it is more correctly applied to those islands within a 30 mile radius of the town of Dampier.
Ir. recent times, three parties have visited the Archipelago and examined …

Trypanosoma Lewisi Kent (Protozoa: Mastigophora): Ultrastructure And Theory Of Locomotion, Christine Wen Chan, David A. Becker
Trypanosoma Lewisi Kent (Protozoa: Mastigophora): Ultrastructure And Theory Of Locomotion, Christine Wen Chan, David A. Becker
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Trypanosoma lewisi Kent is a nonpathogenic hemoflagellate of rats (Rattus spp.). After briefly reviewing its infrastructure, the writers postulate that inside the flagellum the change in shape of kinetosomal plate 1 may cause one of the central microtubules and the helical-like structure to contribute to flagellar movement. The energy to run this system may be transferred from the kinetoplast with its associated mitochondrion.
Anatomical And Behavioral Aspects Of Killing And Feeding By The Least Weasel, Mustela Nivalis L., Gary A. Heidt
Anatomical And Behavioral Aspects Of Killing And Feeding By The Least Weasel, Mustela Nivalis L., Gary A. Heidt
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The least weasel (Mustela nivalis) is a remarkably well adapted predator of mice and other small animals. Each kill is rather stereotyped, in that the weasel grabs the prey by the nape of the neck and bites through the base of the skull and/or throat, using its lithe body to "wrap up" and hold the prey. The least weasel will kill mice successively until it is too exhausted physically to kill more. Mice are always eaten from the head posteriorly until completely consumed.

Bioclimatic Chambers For Poultry Research: Design And Preliminary Results Of Testing, T.R.C Rokeby, G. S. Nelson, G. C. Harris Jr.
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The 12 new environmental chambers for poultry research recently completed at the University of Arkansas feature solid state electronic systems to control dry bulb temperature and dew point of the chamber air. Dry bulb temperature is controlled by reheating previously cooled and dehumidified air by an electric heater installed in each supply air duct. Solid state controls proportion the flow of electricity to the heater to match the demand. The system is arranged to maintain constant temperature on a diurnal temperature cycle. A solid state time-proportioning control maintains a preselected dew point in each chamber. The control operates a solenoid …
Fisheries Report No. 10 - An Investigation Into The Status Of Introduced Trout (Salmo Spp.) In Western Australia, Dr N. M. Morrissy
Fisheries Report No. 10 - An Investigation Into The Status Of Introduced Trout (Salmo Spp.) In Western Australia, Dr N. M. Morrissy
Fisheries Research Reports
Both brown (Salmo trutta L.) and rainbow (S. gairdnerii trout Richardson) have been introduced into inland waters of the south-west of Western Australia to provide an amateur sport fishery on a gamefish. The large indigenous marron (Cherax tenuimanus Smith) is present in most of these waters. The only large native fish present is the cobbler (Tand- anus bostocki Whitley) which, while highly edible like the marron, has no game-fish qualities.
Hatchery production of trout for stocking waters has been centred at Pemberton in the lower south-west since 1931 when Mr. Cyril Glew, acting in a private capacity, succeeded in hatching …
Coyotes And Sheep, Frederic H. Wagner
Coyotes And Sheep, Frederic H. Wagner
Faculty Honor Lectures
To many persons not in the profession, the term wildlife management largely connotes the husbandry of fish, birds, or mammals for hunting and fishing purposes. Even if we grant an implied breadth in his use of the term "recreation," Leopold's (1933:3) definition of game management in his classic book by the same name tends to foster this impression: " ... the art of making land produce sustained annual crops of wild game for recreational

Sheep Meat Production Trial, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Better understanding of Middle- East, European and Asian market requirements for Australian sheep has influenced the design of a large meat production trial at Avondale Research Station.
The trial will supply basic information on sheep meat production and involves examples of breed types available in Western Australia and capable of supplying young, lean animals all the year round.
Reproductive Wastage In Sheep On Clover Areas, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Reproductive Wastage In Sheep On Clover Areas, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Western Australia's 67 per cent lambing for 1970 compares poorly with that of other Australian States, and other countries. From the 12.3 million ewes mated in this State's agricultural areas in 1970, only 8.2 million lambs were marked.
This low 77.7 per cent conception rate sparked the present series of reproductive wastage investigations by the Department's Sheep and Wool Branch.
This report describes the first year's results of the project in W.A.'s "clover disease" areas.

Reproductive Wastage In Sheep In Non-Clover Areas, C. H. Trotman
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
A Research Round-up report in the June, 1972, issue of the Journal of Agriculture discussed the reproductive performance of sheep in Western Australia and indicated that more than 20 per cent, of mated ewes fail to lamb.
The report presented the first year's results from sheep grazing clover areas.
This report presents results from the nonclover sections of the investigations
Meat From The Dairy Herd, R A. Bettenay
Meat From The Dairy Herd, R A. Bettenay
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Beef raising is a profitable sideline for many West Australian dairy farmers and gives their farming operation flexibility and versatility.
With suitable management and feeding the weight gains and consumer acceptance of dairy beef allow it to compete strongly with beef from other sources.
The breeds most common on W.A. dairy farms are well suited to beef production.
